There exist some monographs on Stochastic Differential Equations on Manifolds (e. g. [9,36,38,87]) based on the Stratonovich approach. In [7] there is a detailed description of It6 equations on manifolds in Belopolskaya-Dalecky form. Nelson's book [94] deals with Stochastic Mechanics and mean derivatives on Riemannian Manifolds. The books and survey papers on the Lagrange approach to Hydrodynamics [2,31,73,88], etc. , give good presentations of the use of infinite-dimensional ordinary differential geometry in ideal hydrodynamics. We should also refer here to [89,102], to the previous books by the author [53,64], and to many others.

Book excerpt: It is known that to any Riemannian manifold (M, g ) , with or without boundary, one can associate certain fundamental objects. Among them are the Laplace-Beltrami opera tor and the Hodge-de Rham operators, which are natural [that is, they commute with the isometries of (M,g)], elliptic, self-adjoint second order differential operators acting on the space of real valued smooth functions on M and the spaces of smooth differential forms on M, respectively. If M is closed, the spectrum of each such operator is an infinite divergent sequence of real numbers, each eigenvalue being repeated according to its finite multiplicity. Spectral Geometry is concerned with the spectra of these operators, also the extent to which these spectra determine the geometry of (M, g) and the topology of M. This problem has been translated by several authors (most notably M. Kac). into the col loquial question "Can one hear the shape of a manifold?" because of its analogy with the wave equation. This terminology was inspired from earlier results of H. Weyl. It is known that the above spectra cannot completely determine either the geometry of (M , g) or the topology of M. For instance, there are examples of pairs of closed Riemannian manifolds with the same spectra corresponding to the Laplace-Beltrami operators, but which differ substantially in their geometry and which are even not homotopically equiva lent.

The interested reader will find this theory discussed in the monographs, Lectures on Nonlinear Functional Analysis by J. T. Schwartz, and Foundations of Global Nonlinear Analysis by R. S. Palais. Furthermore, our choice of material was necessarily selective, for example, iterative results such as Newton's method and Nash's implicit function theorem have been omitted. Nonetheless we believe that the material discussed here has sufficient beauty to induce the reader to further excursions into nonlinear analysis. Our text is divided into four chapters and two appendices. Chapter 1 is intended to be a partial answer to the question: What are some of the problems of nonlinear analysis and how have they been studied in previous generations? Chapter 2 introduces the concepts of the degree of a continuous mapping, and the theory of critical points of real-valued functions in finite dimensional Euclidean spaces Rn . In Chapter 3 we show how the ideas of Chapter 2 can be carried over to infinite dimensional spaces. Appendices 1 and 2 at the end of the book include some preliminary material necessary to the understanding of Chapters 2 and 1. In Chapter 4 we select a few specific nonlinear problems and indicate just how the methods of the previous chapters can be used to study these problems. The first-mentioned problem in Chapter 4, global univalence, is of great interest outside of mathematics (for example, to mathematical economists in the study of international trade and to applied mathematicians studying elastic deformations). Similarly the topics of differential equations (ordinary and partial) discussed in Chapter 4 are basic to the understanding of physical processes of nature.
