Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Genetic Algorithms 1991 (FOGA 1) discusses the theoretical foundations of genetic algorithms (GA) and classifier systems. This book compiles research papers on selection and convergence, coding and representation, problem hardness, deception, classifier system design, variation and recombination, parallelization, and population divergence. Other topics include the non-uniform Walsh-schema transform; spurious correlations and premature convergence in genetic algorithms; and variable default hierarchy separation in a classifier system. The grammar-based genetic algorithm; conditions for implicit parallelism; and analysis of multi-point crossover are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the genetic algorithms for real parameter optimization and isomorphisms of genetic algorithms. This publication is a good reference for students and researchers interested in genetic algorithms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Genetic Algorithms, Volume 2 provides insight of theoretical work in genetic algorithms. This book provides a general understanding of a canonical genetic algorithm. Organized into six parts encompassing 19 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of genetic algorithms in the broader adaptive systems context. This text then reviews some results in mathematical genetics that use probability distributions to characterize the effects of recombination on multiple loci in the absence of selection. Other chapters examine the static building block hypothesis (SBBH), which is the underlying assumption used to define deception. This book discusses as well the effect of noise on the quality of convergence of genetic algorithms. The final chapter deals with the primary goal in machine learning and artificial intelligence, which is to dynamically and automatically decompose problems into simpler problems to facilitate their solution. This book is a valuable resource for theorists and genetic algorithm researchers.

This series of workshops was initiated in 1990 to encourage further research on the theoretical aspects of genetic algorithms, and the workshops have been held biennially ever since. The papers presented at these workshops are revised, edited and published as volumes during the year following each workshop. This series of (now eight) volumes provides an outstanding source of reference for the theoretical work in this ?eld. At the same time this series of volumes provides a clear picture of how the theoretical research has grown and matured along with the ?eld to encompass many evolutionary computation paradigms including evolution strategies (ES), evolutionary programming (EP), and genetic programming (GP), as well as the continuing growthininteractionswith other ?elds suchas mathematics, physics, and biology. Atraditionoftheseworkshopsisorganizetheminsuchawayastoencourage lots of interaction and discussion by restricting the number of papers presented and the number of attendees, and by holding the workshop in a relaxed and informal setting. This year’s workshop was no exception. Thirty-two researchers met for 3 days to present and discuss 16 papers. The local organizer was Lothar Schmitt who, together with help and support from his university, provided the workshop facilities. Aftertheworkshopwasover, theauthorsweregiventheopportunitytorevise their papers based on the feedback they received from the other participants.

Book excerpt: Statistical Computing: Existing Methods and Recent Developments attempts to provide a state of the art account of existing methods and recent developments in the so called new field of Statistical Computing. Fourteen different chapters deal with a wide range of topics. This includes introductory topics such as the basic numerical analysis methods, random number generation, graphical techniques used in statistical data analysis and other areas. It also covers the more specialized techniques such as the EM algorithm, genetic algorithms, nonparametric smoothing techniques, resampling methods, and artificial neural network models, to name a few. In addition, the volume also deals with the computational issues involved in the analysis of mixture models, adaptive designs, weighted distributions, and statistical signal processing, topics which are unlikely to be covered in a standard text on Statistical Computing.

Instead of introducing each field individually, the authors focus on the research that sits at the interface of both fields. The book is structured to address two questions: (1) how complex networks are used to analyze and improve the performance of evolutionary computation methods? (2) how evolutionary computation methods are used to solve problems in complex networks? The authors interweave complex networks and evolutionary computing, using evolutionary computation to discover community structure, while also using network analysis techniques to analyze the performance of evolutionary algorithms. The book is suitable for both beginners and senior researchers in the fields of evolutionary computation and complex networks.

Book excerpt: Intelligent Control considers non-traditional modelling and control approaches to nonlinear systems. Fuzzy logic, neural networks and evolutionary computing techniques are the main tools used. The book presents a modular switching fuzzy logic controller where a PD-type fuzzy controller is executed first followed by a PI-type fuzzy controller thus improving the performance of the controller compared with a PID-type fuzzy controller. The advantage of the switching-type fuzzy controller is that it uses one rule-base thus minimises the rule-base during execution. A single rule-base is developed by merging the membership functions for change of error of the PD-type controller and sum of error of the PI-type controller. Membership functions are then optimized using evolutionary algorithms. Since the two fuzzy controllers were executed in series, necessary further tuning of the differential and integral scaling factors of the controller is then performed. Neural-network-based tuning for the scaling parameters of the fuzzy controller is then described and finally an evolutionary algorithm is applied to the neurally-tuned-fuzzy controller in which the sigmoidal function shape of the neural network is determined. The important issue of stability is addressed and the text demonstrates empirically that the developed controller was stable within the operating range. The text concludes with ideas for future research to show the reader the potential for further study in this area. Intelligent Control will be of interest to researchers from engineering and computer science backgrounds working in the intelligent and adaptive control.

Book excerpt: Foundations of Genetic Algorithms, Volume 7 (FOGA-7) is a collection of 22 papers written by the field's leading researchers, representing the most current, state-of-the-art research both in GAs and in evolutionary computation theory in general. Much more than proceedings, this clothbound book and its companion six volumes document the bi-annual FOGA workshops since their inception in 1990. Before publication, each paper is peer reviewed, revised, and edited. Covering the variety of analysis tools and techniques that characterize the behavior of evolutionary algorithms, the FOGA series, with its brand-new volume 7, provides the single best source of reference for the theoretical work in this field.

They have been enhanced and modified suitably for publication. The book comprises recent works covering several aspects of reuse in intelligent systems – including Scientific Theory and Technology-Based Applications. New data analytic algorithms, technologies, and tools are sought to be able to manage, integrate, and utilize large amounts of data despite hardware, software, and/or bandwidth constraints; to construct models yielding important data insights, and to create visualizations to aid in presenting and understanding the data. Furthermore, it addresses the representation, cleansing, generalization, validation, and reasoning strategies for the scientifically-sound and cost-effective advancement of all kinds of intelligent systems – including all software and hardware aspects. The book addresses problems such as, how to optimally select the information/data sets for reuse and how to optimize the integration of existing information/knowledge with new, developing information/knowledge sources!
