Book Synopsis Monte Carlo Calculations of Low Background Detector Response by :

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An implementation of the Electron Gamma Shower 4 code (EGS4) has been developed to allow convenient simulation of typical gamma ray measurement systems. Coincidence gamma rays, beta spectra, and angular correlations have been added to adequately simulate a complete nuclear decay and provide corrections to experimentally determined detector efficiencies. This code has been used to strip certain low-background spectra for the purpose of extremely low-level assay. Monte Carlo calculations of this sort can be extremely successful since low background detectors are usually free of significant contributions from poorly localized radiation sources, such as cosmic muons, secondary cosmic neutrons, and radioactive construction or shielding materials. Validation of this code has been obtained from a series of comparisons between measurements and blind calculations. The singles counting efficiency of a particular counting experiment was reproduced within the accuracy of the known dimensions of the detector components. This allowed the complete simulation of a nuclear decay, including two coincident gamma rays with a non-isotropic angular correlation. In addition, text-book efficiency curves have been reproduced for several sizes of sodium iodide detectors. Examples of the use and several spectral results are presented.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Monte Carlo calculation of the energy spectrum emitted by a collimated, Co-60 source is reported. The collimator assumed is very similar to one currently being used in experimental shielding studies at the University of Illinois. Radiation emerging from the collimator is classified into 13 equal-length energy intervals between 0.1 and 1.4 MeV, and into 3 direction intervals for angles relative to the collimator axis between 0 and 90 deg. Comparisons are made with experimental and theoretical work reported by others. (Author).

Book Synopsis Monte Carlo Models for the Production of Beta-delayed Gamma Rays Following Fission of Special Nuclear Materials by :
Download or read book Monte Carlo Models for the Production of Beta-delayed Gamma Rays Following Fission of Special Nuclear Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Monte Carlo method for the estimation of [beta]-delayed [gamma]-ray spectra following fission is described that can accommodate an arbitrary time-dependent fission rate and photon collection history. The method invokes direct sampling of the independent fission yield distributions of the fissioning system, the branching ratios for decay of individual fission products and the spectral distributions for photon emission for each decay mode. Though computationally intensive, the method can provide a detailed estimate of the spectrum that would be recorded by an arbitrary spectrometer, and can prove useful in assessing the quality of evaluated data libraries, for identifying gaps in these libraries, etc. The method is illustrated by a first comparison of calculated and experimental spectra from decay of short-lived fission products following the reactions 235U(n{sub th}, f) and 239Pu(n{sub th}, f). For general purpose transport calculations, where detailed consideration of the large number of individual [gamma]-ray transitions in a spectrum may be unnecessary, it is shown that an accurate and simple parameterization of a [gamma]-ray source function can be obtained. These parametrizations should provide high-quality average spectral distributions that should prove useful in calculations describing photons escaping from thick attenuating media.
Book Synopsis The Analog Linear Interpolation Approach for Monte Carlo Simulation of Prompt Gamma-Ray Neutron Activation Analysis by :
Download or read book The Analog Linear Interpolation Approach for Monte Carlo Simulation of Prompt Gamma-Ray Neutron Activation Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Monte Carlo code (CEARPGA I) was developed to generate the elemental library spectra required for implementing the Monte Carlo Library Least-Squares algorithm for prompt gamma-ray neutron activation analysis (PGNAA). The existing big weight problem in which a few histories yield very large weights with very large variance has been investigated thoroughly. It has been found that the expected value splitting technique, a powerful variance reduction technique used in the code is the primary cause of this problem. Two Monte Carlo simulation approaches have been investigated to eliminate the big weight problem while still maintaining high efficiency. They are 1) score importance map with batch tracking and 2) analog linear interpolation. Both approaches were implemented separately in the corresponding Monte Carlo codes on the basis of CEARPGA I code and demonstrated to be feasible for solving the big weight problem. The analog linear interpolation approach was selected to incorporate into the new CEARPGA Monte Carlo code (CEARPGA II). A comparison of the results obtained by both CEAEPGA I and CEARPGA II codes as well as experimentally measured data shows that the big weight problem has been successfully eliminated, the accuracy of the simulation has improved greatly, and the simulated results agree very well with the measured data. In addition, some other important improvements have been made in the CEARPGA II to make it more accurate, efficient and powerful, including: 1) tracking pair production gamma rays, 2) incorporating neutron activation background spectra, 3) generating natural background spectra, 4) taking into account the non-linearity of NaI detectors, and 5) adopting a general geometry package.
