Book excerpt: ‘Twenty, thirty, forty years old and counting’ is a quick read and seeks to identify 15 principles, which, if practiced, will make life so much easier. It looks at adults in this age group who see life changing before them, and who fail to realize that what they have created arose from their own actions, and that they can make changes using these ‘secrets’ mentioned in the book. It is hoped that you, the reader, will go through the examples and explanations several times and as you see the benefits manifesting in your own life, pass on the lessons to others. You will then agree that life truly does not have to be that hard.

Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book chronicles the little-understood evolution of the neoconservative movement—from its birth as a rogue insurgency in the Nixon White House through its ascent to full and controversial control of America's foreign policy in the Bush years. In eye-opening detail, The Forty Years War documents the neocons' four-decade campaign to seize the reins of American foreign policy: the undermining of Richard Nixon's outreach to the Communist bloc nations; the success at halting détente during the Ford and Carter years; the uneasy but effectual alliance with Ronald Reagan; and the determined, and ultimately successful, campaign to overthrow Saddam Hussein—no matter the cost.Drawing upon recently declassified documents, hundreds of hours of interviews, and long-obscured White House tapes, The Forty Years War delves into the political and intellectual development of some of the most fascinating political figures of the last four decades. It describes the complex, three-way relationship of Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger, and Alexander Haig, and unravels the actions of Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, and Paul Wolfowitz over the course of seven presidencies. And it reveals the role of the mysterious Pentagon official Fritz Kraemer, a monocle-wearing German expatriate whose unshakable faith in military power, distrust of diplomacy, moralistic faith in American goodness, and warnings against "provocative weakness" made him the hidden geopolitical godfather of the neocon movement. The authors' insights into Kraemer's influence on the neocons—will change the public understanding of the conduct of government in our time.

Recently remarried, a thriving career, living in a beautiful mountain resort - life was looking up again. Suddenly an aggressive case of leukemia turned his world upside down. His only hope for survival was a bone marrow transplant, and at his age the outlook wasn't good... In this gripping chronicle, Peter Gordon describes the initial shock, the ensuing scramble, the anxious wait for a matching donor, the long hospitalization for the transplant itself, and the surprisingly difficult road afterward. And that's just part of the story. His wife suffers a debilitating injury, tossing the couple into intertwined roles of patient and caregiver. For several years they struggle together through one challenge after another. Peter's story provides a riveting, "in the moment" view of a regular guy and his wife grappling with cancer and its many offshoots. He shares razor-sharp observations, moments of deep introspection, and the wide emotional swings of their journey: from stressful and gut-wrenching, to humorous, heartwarming, and poignant. Six Years and Counting is a real-world healthcare saga for our times, offering insightful lessons for cancer patients, caregivers, and medical professionals. It's also a touching story about relationships, family, and self-discovery - and ultimately an inspiring tale of resilience and love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counting the Days to Armageddon is work is of vital importance for all concerned with the Jehovah's Witness movement. It provides a thorough examination of their eschatological development, treating Watch Tower theology objectively but sympathetically. Crompton also speculates about the future direction of Jehovah's Witness teaching. The book begins with a brief consideration of the biblical foundations of doctrines of the last days, particularly the books of Daniel and Revelation. There follows an outline summary of some of the main aspects of the history of this doctrine within the Protestant mainstream during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and an outline of the Adventist teaching of William Miller (1782-1849) in the U.S.A. During the time following the failure of Miller's expectations of the end of the world, his ideas were developed by Charles Taze Russell (1852-1916), prime mover of the Watch Tower movement. Counting the Days to Armageddon explores the way in which Russell amended Miller's ideas, and also the distinctive way in which he handled the Dispensational categorisation of history of John Nelson Darby (1800-1882) to create an extension of historicist speculation on the application of prophecy to the modern world. The response of the Watch Tower movement to the failure of Russell's expectations in 1914 is explored, and the new body of doctrine which has replaced Russell's is examined. The ways in which these doctrines have been modified in the past suggest ways in which future doctrine may develop, especially in response to the protracted delay of Armageddon. What is envisaged, in the light of the history of Watch Tower doctrine, is no dramatic collapse of the movement but rather an increasing emphasis upon other, less vulnerable areas of doctrine together with a greater turnover of membership which may, in due course, undermine the movement's stability.

Many consider Numbers to be a dry read, which contains little of interest! . . . but the book contains Moses' report of many interesting events, happenings, and teachings which provide excellent lessons for all! Surely every Christian today should pay close attention to the figurative nature of this book! Everything the Lord did in Moses' day was for the benefit of His people - the children of Israel! Everything He does today is for the benefit of His people - believers of the church. . . . and the many figures in this book reveal the parallels between the Lord's treatment of the children of Israel and the Lord's treatment of the church!

For decades, Bruce Springsteen has held center stage as the quintessential American rock and roll artist, expressing the hopes and dreams of the American everyman (and woman) through his vast array of insightful and inspirational songs. In Counting Down Bruce Springsteen, rock writer Jim Beviglia dares to rank his finest songs in descending order from the 100th to his #1 greatest song. He also reflects on why each song has earned its place on the list, and lays out the story behind each of the 100, supplying fresh insights on the musical and lyrical content of Springsteen’s remarkable body of work—in a compelling read for the diehard fan or the newbie just getting acquainted with the Boss. “Many of Springsteen’s most popular songs are here, and rightly so, but so are just as many of his obscure ones . . . Of course, Springsteen fans will shake their collective heads in disagreement at times, but that’s part of the fun.” —Booklist “Beviglia has created so much more than a list . . . If you have ever seen Springsteen perform live in concert, those musical memories will all come rushing back as your turn the pages.” —Osceola News Gazette

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counting Religion in Britain, 1970-2020, the fourth volume in the author's chronological history of British secularization, sheds significant new light on the nature, scale, and timing of religious change in Britain during the past half-century, with particular reference to quantitative sources. Adopting a key performance indicators approach, twenty-one facets of personal religious belonging, behaving, and believing are examined, offering a much wider range of lenses through which the health of religion can be viewed and appraised than most contemporary scholarship. Summative analysis of these indicators, by means of a secularization dashboard, leads to a reaffirmation of the validity of secularization (in its descriptive sense) as the dominant narrative and direction of travel since 1970, while acknowledging that it is an incomplete process and without endorsing all aspects of the paradigmatic expression of secularization as a by-product of modernization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August of 1974, the photographer Nicholas Nixon made a group portrait of his wife, Bebe, and her three sisters, Heather, Mimi and Laurie the Brown sisters. He did not keep that image, but in 1975 he made another portrait of the four, who then ranged in age from 15 to 25. Working with an 8x10-inch view camera, whose large negatives capture a wealth of detail and a luscious continuity of tone, Nixon did the same in 1976, and this second successful photograph prompted him to suggest to the sisters that they assemble for a portrait every year. The women agreed, and have gathered for an annual portrait ever since. Nicholas Nixon: 40 Years of The Brown Sisters celebrates the fortiethanniversary of the series in 2014, featuring luminous tri-tone reproductions of all forty portraits, and a new afterword by curator Sarah Hermanson Meister, which examines the series public exhibitions, critical reception, and cult following. Like the previous editions of the series, published by The Museum of Modern Art in 1999 and 2008 for the twenty-fifth and thirtythird anniversaries of the series, and both out of print, Nicholas Nixon: 40 Years of The Brown Sisters is an important chapter in an ongoing project that we hope will continue for many years more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The skepticism holding sway in our public society practically screams that one cannot be serious and also be Christian. This work exposes the lie to such skepticism. This book adopts the scientific method to demonstrate the underlying facts recorded in the Gospels. The arguments rely solely upon reason and objective criteria to substantiate their conclusions. This fast-paced work by a nuclear engineering executive with more than thirty-five years of experience will defy expectations. Rigorous and systematic, this apologetic work is curated with verve, energy, and wit. It will pique the interests of academics and lay audience alike by answering these questions: -Why is the resurrection a necessary but not sufficient condition for the rise of Christianity? -Who founded Christianity? Hint: it was not Saint Paul, as many suppose. -Why did the church retain all of the Hebrew Bible, even though only a small fraction pertains directly to the New Testament? -How does the church rectify the necessity of justice with the virtue of mercy? -Why did his first followers call Jesus the Christ while fully aware that he did not satisfy the expectations of the Christ in the Hebrew Bible? At the end of the book, readers will ask the same question about Jesus that Jesus asked of the apostles, "Who do you say that I am?"

Book excerpt: The relations between the two states and societies have been rather complex during both the previous half-century and beyond. Embedded in changing political landscapes, the ramifications reach back to the early 19th century. Yet the uniqueness of the relationship network only shows in light of the wholesale murder of Jews in Europe, the creation of the State of Israel, the discussions surrounding the initiation of diplomatic relations and their arrangement until the present day. The development and intensity of the relations with regard to civil society and politics are quite astonishing when considering the beginnings. Approaches, changes and the in part greatly-varying perceptions of the other side can be observed over the course of 50 years of history, and these give rise to questions concerning the current state of the relationship and its future design.
