Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fortunes for Farmers The book cannot fail to inspire a new hope in our agricultural assets. Its author looks over things with a far-reaching eye. He has a good deal to say of the farm of the future. That is as it should be, for it helps us to shape the farm of today. And he points out, too, in no uncertain way, the advantages of the well-placed farmer. No other citizen is so well able to face national adversities as the man whose daily food grows in his own fields, and whose capital is buried in the safe vaults of mother earth. Book excerpt: William Taylor Adams (July 30, 1822 - March 27, 1897), pseudonym Oliver Optic, was a noted academic, author, and a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Adams first began to write at the age of 28, and his first book, Hatchie, the Guardian Slave (1853), was published under the pseudonym of Warren T. Ashton. It was only a modest success, but Adams was undaunted. In 1854 Adams produced his first real hit, the initial volume in the Boat Club series. Among his best-known works were the two "Blue and Gray" series, which were set during the Civil War. Adams wrote well over 100 books in total, most of them for a boy audience, and the majority of these in series of four to six volumes.

If their parents would afford them some little Opportunity to begin early, - an equal one with the sharp newsboy of the city, - they too would become so shrewd, so self-reliant, so expert at acquisition, even on the farm, that, educated to moderation, they would be too well sat isfied with small gains to be overcome by the seductions of city life. If it be mere money which makes the latter attrae tive, a certainty of being able to acquire it at home would seem to be potent enough to surround with greater attractions the spot on which the farmer's boy may have been born. In Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, the surroundings were delightful, but profits seemed small while the prairie, from the Canadian Pacific Railway down to Iowa, though certainly productive, was to my eyes as heart breaking as the plains of India. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks About the Weather in Its Relation to Plants and Animals: A Book of Observations for Farmers, Students, and Schools There lived at one time a man, who, being in want, and having long waited for Fortune, concluded that he would go in search of her. So he took what little money he had saved, shut up his house, and set out upon his travels in search Of Fortune. He journeyed on for many days, and made diligent inquiry of those he met as to where Fortune might be found. Some said she was in one place, and some were quite sure she was in another place. All were certain she did not dwell with them, and many said that perhaps she might be found a little farther on. Several even said that she had been with them but lately, and had just gone away to another place. After travelling many leagues, and spending all his money, he sadly returned to his own home, and there found Fortune seated on his doorstep, as if waiting his return. As he drew near, she rose quickly, and said, I have been waiting here for some time, in the hope that you would let me into your house. I have waited so long now, that I must go away to find Others more ready to welcome me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Egg Farming Ery few fortunes are made from poultry, but thousands of newcomers since the War are making a good living from egg production. It would be useless to deny that there have lately been failures in the business but that is because so many quite inexperienced men, in every way unsuited to a country life, took up poultry farming after they were demobilised. There was a big poultry boom then, and, now that the least capable of the post-war egg-farmers have found their inflated expectations without foundation and retired from the business in disgust, the reaction has set up a certain amount of depression in the poultry world. We are now back to something approaching pre-war conditions, and, in spite of the many poultry farms in the market, there is still ample margin of profit from egg production. The present time is, in my opinion, a much more opportune time to make a start than has occurred during the last six years or more. Values are now right down and there is no fear of the heavy capital deprecia tion which all who built their farms within a year or two of the Armistice have sufiered. There are plenty of poultry farms to be had at reasonable prices now the boom is over and the prospects for the future have never been rosier than they. Now are.
