Book excerpt: El habitante corriente guarda de la geografía una imagen de asignatura escolar, heredada de un modelo educativo cuyo énfasis ha sido la transmisión de información. Conocer la localización de un accidente geográfico o de un municipio implicaba casi siempre las mismas consideraciones: Saber dónde está, una breve descripción y, acto seguido, proceder a ubicarlo en el mapa. El inventario se completaba con visiones alegóricas en las que se ponderaban los recursos naturales y las condiciones climáticas, por ejemplo, del territorio colombiano, las cuales reñían a la vuelta de la esquina con inadmisibles niveles de pobreza y episódicos desastres por eventos naturales. En este marco de referencia acerca de la imagen cotidiana de la geografía y de algunos de los debates al interior de ella, ¿por qué, entonces, Pensar, Sentir y Vivir los espacios? Esta tríada nace del contacto con la teoría geográfica y de edificantes vivencias con profesores de ciencias sociales y estudiantes de los distintos niveles educativos. De la pregunta ¿en qué educa la geografía?, nacieron múltiples opiniones que al cabo de los años, como una manera o estrategia conceptual y práctica de ir encontrándole caminos posibles al interrogante, se fueron agrupando en Pensar, Sentir y Vivir los espacios, las posibles respuestas. En síntesis, el interés es convertir la propuesta geográfica de pensar, sentir y vivir los espacios, en una opción educativa de formación ciudadana, mediante el reconocimiento del lugar como la unidad territorial básica para la educación política de los ciudadanos.
