Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Draws on economic theory, developing country case studies, and lessons learned by OECD nations to examine the relationship between structural adjustment and agricultural research. Structural adjustment programs have been undertaken in many developing countries in an effort to overcome economic instability arising from commodity price shocks, domestic economic mismanagement, and diminishing access to international capital. Such programs take many forms and it is thus difficult to generalize about them, but they have had a profound effect on the economic environment in which agricultural production and consumption occur. This also affects the operation and performance of public sectorinstitutions, including national agricultural research systems. This study examines the complex linkages between structural adjustment and agricultural research. It draws on macroeconomic theory to discuss the relationships between adjustment, policy reform, and institutional hange. The report also focuses on country case studies of East Africa, Burkina Faso, Chile, Ghana, Indonesia, Mexico, and Sri Lanka to examine the successes and failures of adjustment programs in relation to agricultural growth rates. The role of the international community, including the World Bank, and experiences of OECD nations in this arena are reviewed.

Not only is it well-written, the book is full of relevant information and tips to help you get started." --Steven D. Royce, President, Crescent Design "A real--world account of the Federal Government EC/EDI program, this book not only tells you what the current mandates are but also how they will expand and formalize in years to come. A must--read for company decision makers and planners." --Larry L. Jones, Director of Small Business (retired), Phillips Laboratory If you do business with the federal government--or you want to do so--this book is required reading. Recent legislation mandates that by the year 2000, the majority of small-to-mid-sized government purchases must be made via electronic data interchange (EDI). Non-technical in its approach, this unique book focuses on the business side of doing business with the government online. It provides you with all the information you need to get started, and then shows you how to use marketing, bidding, and pricing strategies to maximize profit in the new government purchasing environment. Included are: * Details of the Federal Acquisitions Streamlining Act (FASA) and how it affects small businesses * Worksheets offering a structured approach to business decision-making * An overview of software and online networks, how they work and how to choose the best ones for you * Quick-reference lists of resources for additional information * Directions for completing the detailed Trading Partner Profile registration * A glossary of EDI terms and acronyms that cuts through the jargon Concise and well-written, Doing Business with the Government Using EDI is an invaluable, single-source guidebook for making a profit through government sales.now and in the future.

Book excerpt: This book documents the research I conducted on the subject of Electronic Data Inter change during my time at the Institute of Business Informatics, University of Berne, Switzerland. In this effort I enjoyed a great deal of help from numerous others, in cluding professional colleagues, interview partners, and members of my family. Even though I cannot possibly mention them all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for their selfless support. Above all, I am grateful to Prof. Dr. Gerhard Knolmayer who contributed to the book both in its formative stages and throughout its development. He has been an unwavering source of encouragement during the many difficult stages of the investigation and I greatly benefitted from our discussions of the subject matter. Moreover, he was ex tremely generous with his time in carefully reviewing all the five chapters. The fmancial support for this book came from the Hasler Foundation in Berne. I wish to thank the Foundation, and especially its Managing Director, Dr. P.A. Jaeger, for funding the empirical part of the research project. Likewise, I am grateful to the Uni versity of Berne for providing me with the necessary computer and other resources. The Institute of Business Informatics should be commended particularly for its very stim ulating work environment.
