A portion of this is included in this bulletin. This report is published with a two-fold object in view. It is hoped that it will stimulate a closer study of our trees and shrubs and their distribution throughout the state, and also serve to some extent as a guide in the selection of plants for planting. A knowledge of the trees and Shrubs growing naturally in a given region will enable One to make a better selection of kinds suitable to the existing conditions. Additions or corrections to this list will be thankfully received, and specimens of woody plants from all parts of the state are solicited. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Dakota's Timber Resources In terms of geography and forests, east meets west in South Dakota in a rather dramatic way. The Prairie Plains in the east gradually give way to the grasslands of the Great Plains in the west as elevation increases by some feet between the Minne sota border and Rapid City. The forests in the Plains regions are primarily associated with water - reservoirs, lakes, and the dominating Missouri River and its major tributaries such as the Belle Fourche, Cheyenne, and Big White. Collectively these forests make up only 10 percent of the total forest land in the State and consist primarily of tree species associated with the eastern hardwood forests - elm, ash, basswood, and so forth. In the far western portion of the State and spilling over into northeastern Wyoming are the Black Hills. This isolated mountainous island of granite, limestone, and meta morphic rock thrust up through the western plains is a national geologic landmark treasured for its beauty and history. It is roughly 100 miles long and 60 miles wide and rises from the surrounding plains to an elevation of feet at the top of Harney Peak. The forests in the Black Hills and at higher elevations west of the 103d meridian to the southeast and north of the Hills are typically western, consisting principally of ponderosa pine. About 90 percent of the forest land in South Dakota occurs west of the 103d meridian, and most of it is in the Black Hills. Three counties, Pennington, Lawrence, and Custer, account for most of the State's forest area, which totals roughly 1 7 million acres. Each treatment is a belt of one hundred 6 x 10 - foot plots (total length feet). Vegetation, soil, and site vary considerably within these long belt transects. To minimize this variation, a homogeneous area representa tive of the most predominant habitat crossed by the transect was selected in the field as the location for the samples used in this study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dakota Forestry Pamphlets, Vol. 1 This variety occurs in plats 1, 24, 29k and 30. This is the first season in which the spruce has made anything like satis factory growth. In 1891, the trees in plat 1 made an average growth of one inch, only a very few trees showing any tendency to put out a leading branch and to develop tree form. The trees of this variety in the other plats, being set that season, made almost no growth. During 1892 an average growth of three inches has been made by the trees in plat 1. A large part of them are establishing leading branches, the longest new growth being nearly six inches. The fact that these trees have made three times as great a growth as during any previous year is no doubt partly due to the unusually wet season. This indi cation is emphasized by the fact that, during this season, other spruces in plats of two years planting made greater growth than did these spruces at that stage of planting. Again, the spruces in plat 1 have, during this season, made greater growth than those of any of the later planted plats. This would indi cate that, as the trees become longer established their yearly growth increases, and the increased tendency of the oldest trees to put out leading branches, would seem to confirm this prob ability. With the exception of the Scotch Pine, the Black Hills Spruce is the most promising evergreen now growing at this Station. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of South Dakota Effort has been made in this bulletin to obtain as complete a list of South Dakota birds as possible. In all, 322 species and subspecies have been recorded. With few exceptions these are represented in the University Museum collections at Vermillion. There is perhaps no State in the Union where bird study is more perplexing than in South Dakota. From east to west the State embraces birds of woods, prairie and mountains. The range of many birds is constantly moving westward, and this causes variation in the migrating routes of many species. The Black Hills, lying only a little apart from the Rocky Mountains, are apt to be visited occasionally by western species. From south to north, likewise, both trees and latitude affect the bird problem. The Missouri River with its wooded banks and ravines, traversing the middle of the State, provides conditions which attract some species farther north than they would otherwise come. But for this fact we probably would not have the beautiful Western Blue Grosbeak within our borders. Birds from farther east and south also, such as Cardinals and Wood Thrushes, follow the growing trees into South Dakota. Many birds are found in the southern part of the State which are never seen in the northern part; and some birds which formerly nested in South Dakota no longer do so. So numerous, therefore, are the changes going on in bird life within the State that observations which were made a few years ago may not be accurate today and observations made today may not be accurate tomorrow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of the Black Hills of South Dakota The outcrop of the Cretaceous sandstone forms the foothills, and that of the Jura formation and the Red Beds makes the so-called Race Track, a more or less continuous valley between the foothills and the hills proper. The Race Track is much broader on the south side and forms the larger part of the Minnekahta Plains. On the east side the Carboniferous limestone belt forms a series of hills, and on the west side, where the strata are nearly horizontal, a broad plateau, the Lime stone District. As the slates and schist are comparatively soft, the center of the Black Hills is lower, except where the granite or igneous roeks come to the surface and form the highest peaks in the range.
