Book Synopsis Regenerating the Canadian Forest by : Stephen J. Colombo
Download or read book Regenerating the Canadian Forest written by Stephen J. Colombo and published by Markham, Ont. : Fitzhenry & Whiteside. This book was released on 2001 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, forest sustainability has been a focus of concern for forest management and research in Canada and around the globe. At the core of sustainable forestry is the ability to successfully regenerate forests that have been harvested or disturbed in other ways. Regeneration practices are vital to shaping the composition and quality of forests, determining the levels of sustainable harvest for entire forests, managing and protecting wildlife habitat and aquatic ecosystems, and restoring severely disturbed ecosystems. Until now, there has been no guide for forest regeneration practices applicable to eastern Canada and the northeastern portion of the United States. This book provides a comprehensive synthesis about the principles and practice of forest regeneration, with special reference to the province of Ontario. It is intended as a guide for practicing foresters, forestry students, wildlife biologists, and others who need a refernce that identifies reforestation problems and suggests feasible solutions.

Download or read book User's Manual for "PLANT-PC" written by Bijan Payandeh and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The simulation model PLANT-PC was developed to aid forest managers in Ontario with their forest renewal problems. The model treats the regeneration process as three separate but interdependent phases of stock production, stock storage, and plantation establishment. During each phase, growth and/or survival of seedlings are simulated according to empirical submodels reflecting the effects of various biological factors as well as management options. The model was calibrated for black spruce, white spruce, and jack pine plantations from the Nipigon, Geraldton, Hearst, Kapuskasing, Timmins, and Wawa districts of Ontario. Application of the model is demonstrated by presenting a detailed example. A simple procedure for calibrating the model to account for local or regional conditions is also provided.

Download or read book The Thin Green Line written by Ontario Forest Research Institute and published by Sault Ste Marie : Ontario Forest Research Institute. This book was released on 2005 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest regeneration is a cornerstone of managing forests sustainably. Prompt and efficient regeneration gives society the benefits of wood products, as well as the economic wealth that obtaining and processing wood creates. Good reforestation habits provide more wood from less land and increased timber productivity means that demand for wood products can be met with less impact on non-wood uses of the forest. This symposium which was attended by nearly 200 professionals included participants from Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia had as its focus the issue of forest regeneration which is a cornerstone of managing forests sustainably. Papers presented cover a range of topics related to reforestation within the broader categories of: the status of reforestation and afforestation around the world; nursery methodologies to produce target seedlings; planting and planting site treatments to optimize regeneration; and enhancing timber production and non-timber values through stand establishment.--Document.
