Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many species of fish occupying inland waters reside in watershedsthat were or still are surrounded by forests and are dependent inmajor ways upon such cover. The interactions between fishes andforests are complex, multifaceted, dynamic processes involving mostinland surface waters, forests, subsurface waters, geology andsoils, climate and its changes, and the biotic components of therelevant ecosystems. These interactions also include the aspects offorestry tied to human development, economics, population growthand even philosophies. Fishes and Forestry is truly a landmark publication. Theeditors, Professors Northcote and Hartman, have drawn together andcarefully edited chapters written by 56 scientists from around theworld, covering a vast wealth of information never before appearingwithin the covers of one book. Following an introductory chapter, this exceptional work is broadly divided into sections covering:the ecology of forests, streams, lakes and estuaries; fish biologyand ecology; forestry activities and their effects on aquaticsystems and fishes; 14 chapters covering examples of fish-forestryinteractions from around the world and a final section coveringmeans of effecting better fish-forestry interactions. Fishes and Forestry is an essential purchase for allthose involved in inland fisheries, forestry and their interaction, including fisheries scientists, fish biologists, ecologists, environmental scientists and forestry scientists. Libraries in alluniversities and research establishments where these subjects arestudied and taught should have several copies on their shelves.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document reviews existing and proposed protocols used to monitor stream ecosystem conditions and responses to land management activities in the Pacific Northwest. Because of recent work aimed at improving the utility of habitat survey and fish abundance assessment methods, this review focuses on current (since 1993) monitoring efforts that assess stream habitat conditions and juvenile fish use. It does not focus on protocols specifically intended to monitor trends in fish populations for salmon recovery efforts, other fish life-history stages (e.g., salmonid smolt monitoring or spawner surveys), or approaches designed to monitor water quality or sources of pollution. We provide an overview of agency monitoring protocols, adaptive management, and types of monitoring, and briefly review the core habitat characteristics thought to be most sensitive to forest management practices. Finally, we summarize a selection of protocols in use in the Pacific Northwest in light of those core habitat characteristics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Management and Planning provides a focused understanding of contemporary forest management issues through real life examples to engage students. The methodology for the development of quantitatively-derived forest management plans – from gathering information to the implementation of plans at the forest level – are clearly explained. Emphasis is placed on the development of traditional commodity production forest plans using linear programming, the development of alternative forest plans, and problem resolution in planning. The authors have developed this book based on their personal experience in teaching forest management courses and the review of ten forestry programs (Auburn University, University of Georgia, Iowa State University, Louisiana State University, Northern Arizona University, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Florida, Virginia Tech, and Oregon State University). The integration of extended case studies of a variety of scenarios as well as the inclusion of a section on report writing will engage students. Acknowledgement and integration of various software packages for forest management provide the most useful tools for those studying forest management and distinguish this book from the competition. This book is an ideal resource for students of Forest Management – primarily an upper-level course in forestry, and natural resource management, wildlife, and recreation programs. - Real-life examples illustrated mathematically and graphically - End-of-chapter questions - Modern coverage of the planning and management of US Forest timber production - Case study analysis - Expansive applications drawn for examples in the western US, the Lake States, the northeastern US, the southern US and Canada - Detailed descriptions of models and solution methods for integrating a variety of wildlife habitat constraints
