Not only do they offer original perspectives on European foreign policy, but they bring together various theories on foreign policy discourses that remain too often isolated from each other. This theoretical diversity is clearly reflected in the book’s four-pronged structure: Part I - Post-structuralist Approaches (with contributions from Thomas Diez, Henrik Larsen and Beste Isleyen); Part II - Constructivist Approaches (with contributions from Knud Erik Jørgensen, Jan Orbie, Ferdi de Ville, Esther Barbé, Anna Herranz-Surrallés and Michal Natorski); Part III - Critical Discourse Analytical Approaches (with contributions from Senem Aydin-Düzgit, Amelie Kutter, Ruth Wodak, Salomi Boukala and Caterina Carta); Part IV - Discursive Institutionalist Approaches (with contributions from Ben Rosamond, Antoine Rayroux and Vivien A. Schmidt). The volume is the first full-length study on how to apply different discourse analytical approaches and methodologies to European foreign policy. Book Synopsis Discourse and Affect in Foreign Policy by : Jakub Eberle
Download or read book Discourse and Affect in Foreign Policy written by Jakub Eberle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign and security policy have long been removed from the political pressures that influence other areas of policymaking. This has led to a tendency to separate the analytical levels of the individual and the collective. Using Lacanian theory, which views the subject as ontologically incomplete and desiring a perfect identity which is realised in fantasies, or narrative scenarios, this book shows that the making of foreign policy is a much more complex process. Emotions and affect play an important role, even where ‘hard’ security issues, such as the use of military force, are concerned. Eberle constructs a new theoretical framework for analysing foreign policy by capturing the interweaving of both discursive and affective aspects in policymaking. He uses this framework to explain Germany’s often contradictory foreign policy towards the Iraq crisis of 2002/2003, and the emotional, even existential, public debate that accompanied it. This book adds to ongoing theoretical debates in International Political Sociology and Critical Security Studies and will be required reading for all scholars working in these areas.
Book Synopsis Rethinking European Union foreign policy by : Ben Tonra
Download or read book Rethinking European Union foreign policy written by Ben Tonra and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This book reviews a variety of approaches to the study of the European Union’s foreign policy. Much analysis of EU foreign policy contains theoretical assumptions about the nature of the EU and its member states, their inter-relationships, the international system in which they operate and the nature of European integration. Such assumptions, when not discussed openly, often curtail debate. This book opens up this field of enquiry so students, observers and analysts of EU foreign policy can review a range of tools and theoretical templates from which the development and the trajectory of the EU’s foreign policy can be studied. Situated at the interface between European studies and international relations, the book outlines how the EU relates to the rest of the world, explaining its effort towards creating a credible, effective and principled foreign, security and defence policy.

Book Synopsis Security, Defense Discourse and Identity in NATO and Europe by : Falk Ostermann
Download or read book Security, Defense Discourse and Identity in NATO and Europe written by Falk Ostermann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing changes in the role and place of NATO, European integration, and Franco-American relations in foreign policy discourse under Presidents Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy, this book provides an original perspective on French foreign policy and its identity construction. The book employs a novel research design for the analysis of foreign policies, which can be used beyond the case of France, by combining the discourse theory of the Essex School with Interpretive Policy Analysis to examine political ideas and how they are organized into a foreign policy identity. On these grounds, the volume undertakes a comparative analysis of parliamentary and executive discourse of President Chirac’s failed attempt at NATO reintegration in the 1990s, Sarkozy’s successful attempt in the 2000s, and the Libyan War. Ostermann depicts French foreign policy and identity as turning away from the European Union, atlanticizing, and losing its American nemesis. As a result, France uses a much more pragmatic, de-unionized, and pro-American strategy to implement foreign policy objectives than before. Offering a new and innovative explanation for a major change in French foreign policy and grand strategy, this book will be of great interest to scholars of NATO, European defense cooperation, and foreign policy.
Book Synopsis Strategy and Strategic Discourse in Turkish Foreign Policy by : Hasan Yükselen
Download or read book Strategy and Strategic Discourse in Turkish Foreign Policy written by Hasan Yükselen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical realist analysis of Turkish foreign policy (TFP), covering various periods from the Turkish National Struggle to the contemporary Justice and Development Party Government. It discusses TFP within the critical realist framework, employing the concept of differences in continuity to demonstrate how agency and structure interacted, and how some discourses arose and others failed in the history of the Turkish Republic. The book also applies the concepts of strategy and strategic discourse to reveal how real-world strategic preferences correspond to the narration. Lastly, the author argues that the underlying structural forces have endured, despite Turkey’s persistence in enhancing the agency’s role, ultimately leading to differentiation between “what is spoken” and “what is actualized”.
Book Synopsis India's Foreign Policy Discourse and Its Conceptions of World Order by : THORSTEN. WOJCZEWSKI
Download or read book India's Foreign Policy Discourse and Its Conceptions of World Order written by THORSTEN. WOJCZEWSKI and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given India's growing power and aspirations in world politics, there has been increasing interest among practitioners and scholars of international relations (IR) in how India views the world. This book offers the first systematic investigation of the world order models in India's foreign policy discourse. By examining how the signifier 'world order' is endowed with meaning in the discourse, it moves beyond Western-centric IR and sheds light on how a state located outside the Western 'core' conceptualizes world order. Drawing on poststructuralism and discourse theory, the book proposes a novel analytical framework for studying foreign policy discourses and understanding the changes and continuities in India's post-cold war foreign policy. It shows that foreign policy and world order have been crucial sites for the (re)production of India's identity by drawing a political frontier between the Self and a set of Others and placing India into a system of differences that constitutes 'what India is'. This text will be of key interest to scholars and students of Indian foreign policy, foreign policy analysis, South Asian studies, IR and IR theory, international political thought and global order studies.

Book Synopsis Discourse and Socio-political Transformations in Contemporary China by : Paul Anthony Chilton
Download or read book Discourse and Socio-political Transformations in Contemporary China written by Paul Anthony Chilton and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's opening up to the West, its extraordinary economic rise, and the subsequent internal and global issues, are an object of huge interest and concern. Discourse and Socio-political Transformations in Contemporary China focuses on one aspect of the contemporary Chinese phenomenon, one that is so obvious that it is generally ignored in the mainstream academic departments that politics, society and transformation are the product of myriad collective linguistic interchanges, some stabilized, some competing, some agonistic, some new and emerging. As an outcome of dialogue between Chinese and Western scholars, the present volume contains case studies that offer a survey of the discourse aspect of Chinese society in social stratification, government service, policy consultancy, higher education, foreign policy, and TV. The conceptual reflections on discourse and critique in different cultures offer new considerations for discourse analysis, including critical discourse analysis, in the context of Chinese society today. This volume was originally published as a special issue of Journal of Language and Politics 9:4 (2010).
Book Synopsis Analysing the Foreign Policy of Small States in the EU by : H. Larsen
Download or read book Analysing the Foreign Policy of Small States in the EU written by H. Larsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-08-03 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a distinct national foreign policy still be identified for small EU member states, and what accounts for the balance between national and EU foreign policy? Henrik Larsen develops an analytical framework for analyzing these questions and offers solutions through an empirical examination of the foreign policy of a small EU member state in the context of EU foreign policy - the case of Denmark. The book looks at seven policy areas: policy towards other EU member states, anti-terrorism, development, the Balkans, Africa, Latin America and trade. On the basis of the empirical study, the implications for the theoretical study of national foreign policy in an EU Context are outlined. It is suggested that we need a new, mixed approach to foreign policy analysis within the EU taking into account the nature of the policy area concerned and national conceptions of actorness.
Book Synopsis Discourse and International Relations by : Dagmar Scheu
Download or read book Discourse and International Relations written by Dagmar Scheu and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assembles a selection of essays on Discourse and Intercultural Relations presented at Murcia University in September 2004. After the recent outburst of the East-West conflict intercultural relations and the challenges embedded in intercultural communication are of increasing importance. This compilation unravels these topics from the point of view of Discourse Analysis and Cultural Studies. The main aim is to highlight the discursive strategies employed by the dominant political elite in a variety of contexts to maintain and reinforce their power position in intercultural encounters. The paramount concern is, therefore, to reflect upon the interrelations between language, power and discourse (in the Foucaultian sense). Within a broad theoretical framework, the contributions are divided into two main parts. Part I includes papers which work within the field of Critical Discourse Studies and explore ideological issues, such as the concept of 'otherness', identity, race and the mass media's manipulation of public opinion. Part II adopts a more culturally based stance covering topics, such as intercultural competence, hybridity, intercultural education etc. -- Publisher's Description.
