Book Synopsis Aiding and Abetting by : Jessica Trisko Darden
Download or read book Aiding and Abetting written by Jessica Trisko Darden and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-24 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is the world's leading foreign aid donor. Yet there has been little inquiry into how such assistance affects the politics and societies of recipient nations. Drawing on four decades of data on U.S. economic and military aid, Aiding and Abetting explores whether foreign aid does more harm than good. Jessica Trisko Darden challenges long-standing ideas about aid and its consequences, and highlights key patterns in the relationship between assistance and violence. She persuasively demonstrates that many of the foreign aid policy challenges the U.S. faced in the Cold War era, such as the propping up of dictators friendly to U.S. interests, remain salient today. Historical case studies of Indonesia, El Salvador, and South Korea illustrate how aid can uphold human freedoms or propagate human rights abuses. Aiding and Abetting encourages both advocates and critics of foreign assistance to reconsider its political and social consequences by focusing international aid efforts on the expansion of human freedom.

Download or read book Foreign Aid written by Carol Lancaster and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A twentieth-century innovation, foreign aid has become a familiar and even expected element in international relations. But scholars and government officials continue to debate why countries provide it: some claim that it is primarily a tool of diplomacy, some argue that it is largely intended to support development in poor countries, and still others point out its myriad newer uses. Carol Lancaster effectively puts this dispute to rest here by providing the most comprehensive answer yet to the question of why governments give foreign aid. She argues that because of domestic politics in aid-giving countries, it has always been—and will continue to be—used to achieve a mixture of different goals. Drawing on her expertise in both comparative politics and international relations and on her experience as a former public official, Lancaster provides five in-depth case studies—the United States, Japan, France, Germany, and Denmark—that demonstrate how domestic politics and international pressures combine to shape how and why donor governments give aid. In doing so, she explores the impact on foreign aid of political institutions, interest groups, and the ways governments organize their giving. Her findings provide essential insight for scholars of international relations and comparative politics, as well as anyone involved with foreign aid or foreign policy.
Book Synopsis Foreign Aid as Foreign Policy by : Jeffrey Taffet
Download or read book Foreign Aid as Foreign Policy written by Jeffrey Taffet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign Aid as Foreign Policy presents a wide-ranging, thoughtful analysis of the most significant economic-aid program of the 1960s, John F. Kennedy’s Alliance for Progress. Introduced in 1961, the program was a ten-year, multi-billion-dollar foreign-aid commitment to Latin American nations, meant to help promote economic growth and political reform, with the long-term goal of countering Communism in the region. Considering the Alliance for Progress in Chile, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia, Jeffrey F. Taffet deftly examines the program’s successes and failures, providing an in-depth discussion of economic aid and foreign policy, showing how policies set in the 1960s are still affecting how the U.S. conducts foreign policy today. This study adds an important chapter to the history of US-Latin American Relations.

Book Synopsis Aid Dependence in Cambodia by : Sophal Ear
Download or read book Aid Dependence in Cambodia written by Sophal Ear and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dr. Ear argues that the international community has chosen to prioritize political stability above all other governance dimensions, and in so doing has traded a modicum of democracy for an ounce of security. Focusing on post-1993 Cambodia, Ear explores the unintended consequences in post-conflict environments of foreign aid. He chooses Cambodia both for personal reasons--which infuses an academic analysis with a compelling sense of urgency--and because it is one of the most aid-drenched countries in modern history. He tries to explain the relationship between Cambodia's aid dependence and its appallingly poor governance. He concludes that despite decades of aid, technical cooperation, four national elections, no open warfare, and some progress in some parts of the economy, Cambodia is one broken government away from disaster."--Publisher's description.
Book Synopsis Foreign Aid and Foreign Policy by : Louis A. Picard
Download or read book Foreign Aid and Foreign Policy written by Louis A. Picard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely work presents cutting-edge analysis of the problems of U.S. foreign assistance programs - why these problems have not been solved in the past, and how they might be solved in the future. The book focuses primarily on U.S. foreign assistance and foreign policy as they apply to nation building, governance, and democratization. The expert contributors examine issues currently in play, and also trace the history and evolution of many of these problems over the years. They address policy concerns as well as management and organizational factors as they affect programs and policies. "Foreign Aid and Foreign Policy" includes several chapter-length case studies (on Iraq, Pakistan, Ghana, Haiti, and various countries in Eastern Europe and Africa), but the bulk of the book presents broad coverage of general topics such as foreign aid and security, NGOs and foreign aid, capacity building, and building democracy abroad. Each chapter offers recommendations on how to improve the U.S. system of aid in the context of foreign policy.

Book Synopsis Human Rights and Foreign Aid by : Bethany Barratt
Download or read book Human Rights and Foreign Aid written by Bethany Barratt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-12-19 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By trying to alleviate poverty abroad, foreign development assistance tries to meet, among other things, basic human needs, which some schools of thought classify as basic human rights. However, because development abroad has often been treated as a tool for the pursuit of donor interests, rather than as an end to itself, it often ends up not only neglecting basic human rights, but making them worse. Bethany Barratt develops this argument by presenting a systematic external examination of the internal documentation of aid rationale in three major donor countries (Britain, Canada and Australia). The book sets the discussion of these documents in the context of the foreign policy process and structure of each donor, and contrasts it with the results of statistical analyses of key factors in aid. It shows that different criteria are applied to the various categories of recipient states, resulting in an inconsistent treatment of recipient rights as an aid criterion. While the book demonstrates important gulfs between rhetoric and reality, between elected policymakers and aid implementing agencies, and between the donors themselves, it comes to relatively optimistic conclusions about the general direction of foreign assistance and its increasingly pure focus on poverty alleviation. This substantive and important book will be invaluable to students, researchers and policymakers in the fields of politics, economics and development.
Book Synopsis Organizing U.S. Foreign Aid by : Carol Lancaster
Download or read book Organizing U.S. Foreign Aid written by Carol Lancaster and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2005-07-08 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overwhelmed by a proliferation of foreign aid programs, the U.S. government is attempting to reorganize itself in order to manage them more effectively. This raises several critical issues that will shape U.S. foreign aid policy for the 21st century: Should existing foreign aid agencies be combined into a cabinet-level agency, ensuring a voice for development concerns during policy discussions, or should they be placed in the State Department to strengthen their foreign policy focus? How should aid agencies manage the planning, implementation, and evaluation of their aid? Is "managing for results" as currently practiced appropriate for what is often a highly experimental task of bringing about beneficial changes in foreign countries? How should the U.S. government educate its citizens on the issues of foreign aid and development as expenditures rise and as the ambitious goals driving aid—including nation building—expand? In Organ izing Foreign Aid, Carol Lancaster and Ann Van Dusen call for a fundamental reorganization of U.S. aid programs. They recommend a major increase in efforts at development education. The authors also provide insights into how other donor governments have dealt with these challenges. With the future of U.S. foreign aid policy at stake, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in development, foreign aid, and the organization of government programs in these areas.
