Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture Circular: Sugar, Fs 5-65, October 1965 States and the Soviet Union are the two largest producers as countries. Generally, molasses output follows the production trend of centrifugal sugar. For many producing countries, however, no production statistics are recorded. In some countries, molasses is considered a waste product, disposed of by dumping in the rivers. For countries where reliable information was not avail able, production has been estimated; this is indicated in the accompanying table by parentheses. These estimates were calculated primarily on the basis of the known relationship between production of molasses and of sugar in other countries that have similar processing methods. However, it is recognized that these relationships may vary from country to country and even from year to year in the same country.
