Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture Circular: December 1972 World output of centrifugal sugar (raw value) is now forecast to be million metric tons (82 million short tons) during 1972-73, compared with the previous record crop of million in 1969-70. The 1971-72 crop of million tons was not a record as had been expected in earlier forecasts. Because of sluggish world output for several years, coupled with rising world consumption, carryover stocks decreased. Production will be less than con sumption requirements again in 1972-73 and stocks will be further reduced. The current high world price levels for sugar will probably encourage growers to expand acreage for the 197 3-74 season. During 1972-73, cane sugar production will be an estimated million tons, about 4 million tons more than the year before. Beet sugar production of million tons during 1972-73 is about the same as last year. Cuba's sugar crop will probably be larger this year than last since the weather has been more favorable for the 1972-73 crop. The ussr's crop will be above last year despite drought in some areas. The US crop also will be up due to a better continental cane harvest. Brazil is likely to have a bigger crop since production quotas have been increased to take advantage of high world prices. The Dominican Republic, Mexico, Australia, India, the Philippines, and the Republic of South Africa will also have larger cane crops. Reduced production is expected in Western Europe where there was cold, damp weather in the early part of the growing season. All of the major producers including France, West Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom are believed to have smaller harvests.
