Book excerpt: A study was made to evaluate the elastic behavior of a braked rolling tire and to relate this behavior to the tire characteristics obtained from simple static flexure tests. The study consisted of static and braked-rolling tests of two types of bias-ply aircraft tires and an analysis which related tire reaction to the braking forces. The results of this investigation indicate that the elastic response of an aircraft tire to braking forces can be defined by the displacement distribution along the tire periphery and by the fore-and-aft spring constant. Changes in the rolling radius due to braking can be predicted with reasonable accuracy from elastic measurements of the static free-tread periphery or from elastic measurements within the footprint during low-speed braking, assuming there is no slippage between the tire and the pavement. The results of these tests further indicate that what was heretofore considered as pure tire slippage under braked-rolling conditions may be wholly or in part the result of tire elasticity. The elasticity must be considered in the design or application of efficient automatic braking systems.

Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted at Langley Research Center to determine the quasi-static and dynamic response characteristics of F-4 military fighter 30x11.5-14.5/26PR bias-ply and radial-belted main gear tires. Tire properties were measured by the application of vertical, lateral, and fore-and-aft loads. Mass moment-of-inertia data were also obtained. The results of the study include quasi-static load-deflection curves, free-vibration time-history plots, energy loss associated with hysteresis, stiffness and damping characteristics, footprint geometry, and inertia properties of each type of tire. The difference between bias-ply and radial-belted tire construction is given, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each tire design. Three simple damping models representing viscous, structural, and Coulomb friction are presented and compared with the experimental data. With various load, camber, yaw amplitude and frequency test conditions, the results are presented in fifty-nine (59) sets of frequency response curves. The effects of various test conditions are discussed. A comparison of the radial, shimmy, and non-shimmy tires is given. Book excerpt: This report describes the derivation and validation of the critical speed equation that predicts the inceptive speed of the standing wave in the tread band of aircraft bias tires. The critical speed equation is based on the classical theory of a straight beam on an elastic foundation, under tension. Derivations of relations describing each term of the critical speed equation are also presented. These relations describe the effective tire structural properties such as the tread band bending stiffness, the elastic foundation linear spring constant, the belt tension due to inflation pressure, and the tread band effective density. Dynamometer tests of a 49x17/26PR Type VII Goodyear tire was conducted to validate the critical speed equation. Trends relating critical speed with inflation pressure, tread depth, and loaded vertical deflection were correctly predicted, yielding an average of 2.9-percent error.
