Book Synopsis Sex Crimes and Sex Offenders by : Donna Vandiver
Download or read book Sex Crimes and Sex Offenders written by Donna Vandiver and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex Crimes and Sex Offenders: Research and Realities provides an overview of social scientific theory and research on sex crimes and sex offenders. Most other books on the market are focused on a single issue—such as treatment, rape, pedophilia, theory, etc. This book is unique in that it covers the most current theory and research along with individual cases of sex crimes (e.g., Kobe Bryant, Jerry Sandusky, and other case studies), effectively linking theory and research with the realities of sex crimes and sex offenders as well as their victims. Vandiver, Braithwaite, and Stafford are careful to dispel myths and to focus on the heterogeneity of sex crimes and sex offenders, and not on any one issue or population or theory. Instead, they weave a framework using a full range of theoretical concepts and research data to integrate their discussions of crimes, offenders, victims, treatments, and policy implications. The result is a valuable resource for students and early-stage researchers investigating sex crimes or offenders.

Download or read book Sexual Assault written by Rita F. Gunn and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only a small percentage of all cases of sexual assault are reported to the police. Why do so many women decide not to report an assault? And what happens to the assailant when a case is reported and charges are laid? In this volume Rita Gunn and Candice Minch explore the answers to these questions, basing their analysis on the most comprehensive data available on sexual assault in Canada. Through interviews with victims of sexual assault, they analyze the factors that influence the women to report an attack or keep silent. Society still places the responsibility on women to avoid being sexually assaulted, so the victim is caught in a dilemma when deciding whether to disclose an assault. The authors then look at what happens when a sexual assault is reported. They follow a sample of assaults from the initial police report through to the final disposition of the case, demonstrating that: only 10 percent of the original charges resulted in conviction; 20 percent were reduced to lesser charges; over 70 percent of the charges were filtered out of the criminal justice system before trial; and societal attitudes which blame victims for the offence extend into the legal system. Finally, the authors offer an assessment of the effects of the 1983 sexual assault legislation on the processing and ultimately on the reporting of sexual offences. They conclude that law reform is necessary but not sufficient in itself. “The law is only as innovative as the individuals who use, interpret, and apply it.” This volume provides a valuable analysis of sexual assault as it affects the victim and the assailant.

Book Synopsis All in the Family by : Robert O. Self
Download or read book All in the Family written by Robert O. Self and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2012-09-18 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “brilliant” history of American beliefs about the family, and how those ideas have affected our politics since the 1960s (Washington Monthly). In the 1960s, Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society and War on Poverty promised an array of federal programs to assist working-class families. In the 1980s, Ronald Reagan declared the GOP the party of “family values” and promised to keep government out of Americans’ lives. Again and again, historians have sought to explain the nation’s profound political realignment from the 1960s to the 2000s, five decades that witnessed the fracturing of liberalism and the rise of the conservative right. The award-winning historian Robert O. Self is the first to argue that the separate threads of that realignment—from civil rights to women’s rights, from the antiwar movement to Nixon’s “silent majority,” from the abortion wars to gay marriage, from the welfare state to neoliberal economic policies—all ran through the politicized American family. Based on an astonishing range of sources, All in the Family rethinks an entire era, from the Great Society’s default assumption of a white heterosexual man at the head of each household to the quests for equal rights and opportunities for a broader range of citizens and a more inclusive idea of the American family. He discusses the Roe v. Wade decision and antidiscrimination protections in the workplace, and the furious conservative backlash that began in the 1970s as figures such as George Wallace, Phyllis Schlafly, Anita Bryant, and Jerry Falwell built a political movement based on the perceived moral threat to the traditional family. Self writes that “family values” conservatives in fact paved the way for fiscal conservatives, and that Reagan’s presidency united the two constituencies—which remained for decades the base of the Republican Party. This is a “powerful, well-researched account of how the efforts of marginalized groups to assert their rights as citizens ran up against the resistance of entrenched privilege, setting the stage for the polarization that grips US politics today. . . [Self] reminds us that our democracy is an imperfect thing, only as noble as the people who constitute it” (The Boston Globe).
