These equations are then applied to a plate vibrating in plane strain and to a rectangular plate; with the boundary edges assumed to be hinged in both cases. It is shown that the nonlinear frequencies increase with the amplitude of vibration. It is shown also that transverse shear deformations play an important role; however, the effect produced by these deformations decreases with increasing amplitudes of vibration. (Author).

When I started teaching in the early 1950s, I became interested in the vibrations of plates and shells. Soon after I joined the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn as a professor, I began working busily on my research in vibrations of sandwich and layered plates and shells, and then teaching a graduate course on the same subject. Although I tried to put together my lecture notes into a book, I never finished it. Many years later, I came to the New Jersey Institute of Technology as the dean of engineering. When I went back to teaching and looked for some research areas to work on, I came upon laminated composites and piezoelectric layers, which appeared to be natural extensions of sandwiches. Working on these for the last several years has brought me a great deal of joy, since I still am able to find my work relevant. At least I can claim that I still am pursuing life-long learning as it is advocated by educators all over the country. This book is based on the research results I accumulated during these two periods of my work, the first on vibrations and dynamical model ing of sandwiches, and the second on laminated composites and piezoelec tric layers.

It applies to the case of simply supported rectangular plates loaded by dynamic pressure normal to their planes. A similar method is presented for orthotropic sandwich cylindrical shells. The boundaries of the shell are assumed as simply supported, and the dynamic pressure is normal to the middle surface. In both problems, the analysis takes into account the transverse shear deformation of the core and the material damping of core and facings. The results are presented in the form of expressions suitable for numerical evaluation. (Author).

Book excerpt: In a previous paper the variational equation of motion was applied to the nonlinear analysis of dynamic buckling of simply supported homogeneous (Timoshenko beam) and sandwich plates executing plane-strain motion. To investigate the influence of the edge condition and the interaction between the edge condition and transverse shear effect, the analysis is further extended in this paper to such plates with clamped edges. Results show that the transverse shear effect is much greater for sandwich than for homogeneous plates. They further show that the shear effect is always greater for the clamped than for the simply supported case and is in fact not entirely negligible even for a homogeneous plate if it is clamped. The same conclusions apply to nonlinear vibrations of such plates, which are also investigated. (Author).
