Book excerpt: In this eloquently irreverent volume of memoirs, celebrated broadcaster and writer Brian Glanville looks back over his career as sports journalist with a wealth of anecdotes and a crop of unique stories. Following a spell in Rome as English correspondent with "Corriere dello Sport," Brian returned in 1958 to London to cover his first World Cup in Sweden. He hasn't missed one since, and this personal and revealing collection sheds light on over 50 years of life in the commentary box. Notorious for his forthright views and lack of apprehension in expressing them, Glanville has made as many, if not more, enemies than friends; his accrimonious relationship with former England boss Graham Taylor is well known and is documented in the book. But he also refuses to pull his punches about others. Brian Glanville's compelling commentary on the changing face of sport is an all-round story of one man's obsession with the beautiful game.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Bear"" Bryant was arguably the greatest football coach in the history of college football. Beloved by fans of the Alabama Crimson Tide, by the time he retired from coaching following the 1982 season, his teams had won 323 games, a feat unmatched by any coach in college football history. Before arriving in Tuscaloosa, he had coached at Maryland, Kentucky, and Texas A&M; his teams at Alabama won six national championships and thirteen Southeastern Conference titles. On July 17, 1981, Coach Bryant sat in his office at Memorial Coliseum reminiscing with sports columnist Al Browning of the Tuscaloosa News. Contemplating the twilight of his career, he calmly said, ""They'll forget me as soon as I croak and am buried"". When Browning objected, Coach smiled slightly and said, ""No, that's the way it is. Life moves on, and people find interest in other things"". While Bryant's memory may have faded slightly, he certainly has not been forgotten, and I Remember Paul ""Bear"" Bryant is a glowing testimony to the love that those who knew him best continue to have for him to this day. Here dozens of his contemporaries, former players, childhood friends, family, competitors, opponents, and his ""boys"" offer in their own words their favorite memories of this man they loved so much. They recall ordinary moments as well as extraordinary ones; they recall moments of joyful victory and bitter defeat; they recall memories of the gridiron discipline he dished out and the thoughtful, helpful guidance he offered to his players, even long after they had graduated and gone on to their own careers. While Bryant has moved on from this life, he has not been forgotten, and the personal memories included in IRemember Paul ""Bear"" Bryant proves it beyond doubt. ""

Book excerpt: The 26 men featured in this book have one thing in common: They were all great football players. These legends were the superstars of the NFL and AFL during the glorious 60s and the fun-loving 70s. However, only 2 of these legends are in the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. These stars revolutionized the game of Pro Football with their brilliant performances and were Pro Footballs biggest gate attractions. As the years go by, and the 60s and 70s have become a distant memory, these outstanding football players and mavericks have been unappreciated and forgotten. These heroes and legends of the fall contributed to the success of the NFL and made Pro Football the most popular and exciting sport in America. Distant Memories- The NFLs Best Ever Players of the 60s and 70s focuses on Pro Footballs forgotten stars and legendary heroes from the glorious past. Its about pioneers and great players from yesteryear. I have always wanted to write a book like this. Since I was a former amateur football player and have the knowledge and resources about football, I thought I would be the right person to write this book and do it with class and style. I have watched every football player in this book play every week and have seen all of the weekly highlight shows. I have followed their entire careers and I have seen every touchdown they scored. I watched all NFL and AFL games on TV in the 60s and 70s. In 1970, when the AFL and NFL merged to become one league, I watched every game on TV during the 70s.I can remember my golden Sunday mornings and early afternoons when I played football during the 70s. I always hurried home from my games so I could watch the NFL on TV. You can ask my wonderful mother. She knew where I was every Sunday afternoon during the football season when I was young. I would like the players in this book to finally receive the recognition they deserve for their outstanding accomplishments. Danny Jones http://www.starsofthenfl.com/index.html

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bowl Full of Memories: 100 Years of Football at the Yale Bowl covers the Yale football from its inception in 1872 and pays tribute to the historic Yale Bowl, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2014. Based on more than 150 interviews—more than 100 of which were conducted with former players—the book serves as a time-capsule of Yale football by those who took part in this most storied college football program. Players, coaches, writers, broadcasters and fans give their view of the spectacle, people, places, and contests that make Yale football history come to life. Marazzi, who has seen almost every game in the Yale Bowl in the last 50 years, gives due attention to the career of towering figures like legendary Yale football coach Walter Camp, whose story is important to understanding Yale football and the evolution of the game as we know it. And of course he covers the one of the oldest rivalries in college sports, between Yale and Harvard. The book takes readers into the huddle, the locker room, the practice field, the campus, and the hearts and minds of Yalies over the past century. Bowl Full of Memories: 100 Years of Football at the Yale Bowl is a book that every Yale alum, Ivy League and college football fan will want to own and refer to often. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Book excerpt: Football has undergone a period of transformation over the last thirty years. Despite these global processes, different national leagues have adapted in different ways. After an initial period of success directly after Italia '90, Italian football has gone through a period of sustained crisis. It has been blighted by financial mismanagement, corruption scandals and fan violence. This has impacted Italy's ability to compete on a global stage. Football Italia accounts for the development of Italian football in relation to the wider global transformations impacting football and addresses the reasons for Serie A's initial success and current malaise. Theoretically, this book locates Italian football within the wider power network of the state and how this has impacted political engagement. After an historical overview of the Italian political economy, Football Italia highlights how football is part of the wider political network. Football clubs are owned by powerful businessmen (and they are all men) who are also politicians. This centralisation of power within a small hegemonic group inhibits change. Within this broader structure, wider corruption scandals continue; from regular match-fixing scandals to doping. Meanwhile, stadiums are crumbling and police over-aggressive. It is within this context that we must place the fans. Both the ultras and supporters who attend official supporters' clubs are disaffected and without the power to change the status quo. Consequently, Italian football has been in decline throughout the 21st century.
