Book excerpt: The University of Alabama (UA) is one of the most prominent and fascinating universities in the United States. Volume One of this series explored UA’s 1819 birth, its formative years, its burning by Union soldiers, and its subsequent rebirth in 1871. Volume Two introduces a number of important elements into the ongoing narrative, including: the University’s continual hassle with the radical state government through 1877; a span of only seven years wherein three UA presidents either die in office or in Tuscaloosa shortly after resigning, creating a terrible period of psychological mourning that affected everyone associated with the University; the strict admission of women students, and the effect of this on the faculty, administration, and the cadets; and the establishment of student-written works including a journal, a newspaper, and a yearbook. The volume also looks at the history of unofficial student sports dating from the 1870s and the official birth in 1892 of a school-sanctioned athletic program for football and baseball, the germ of what would eventually be named the Crimson Tide, including the first twelve rocky years of the program. It also explores the successful 1900 Student Rebellion against the military style of student government, a rebellion that would rock the very soul of the school, involving the state press, the legislature, the governor, the alumni, and the citizens of Alabama, and which witnessed the fall of the commandant and eventually of the president, thus wrenching the students out of their fluctuating but often sorrowful psychological state of mind into an ever-evolving psychology and experience of success.

Volume One of this series explored UA’s birth, formative years, its burning by Union soldiers, and its rebirth in 1871. Volume Two noted the adolescent years of the school, rebellion by the students against the military system of government, the rise of a student culture via the admission of women, and a nascent men’s sports program. This third volume explores rising enrollment and a new style of student governance. The book investigates how UA dealt with student smoking, cursing, and hazing. It covers how UA became nationally respected academically, the rise of a successful sports program, the first use of the phrase “Crimson Tide,” the history of the Million Dollar Band and how “Yea, Alabama” became the school fight song, the UA/Auburn rift, and the UA response to WWI and to the women’s rights movement.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The story of how the NFL, over a period of nearly two decades, denied and sought to cover up mounting evidence of the connection between football and brain damage “League of Denial may turn out to be the most influential sports-related book of our time.”—The Boston Globe “Professional football players do not sustain frequent repetitive blows to the brain on a regular basis.” So concluded the National Football League in a December 2005 scientific paper on concussions in America’s most popular sport. That judgment, implausible even to a casual fan, also contradicted the opinion of a growing cadre of neuroscientists who worked in vain to convince the NFL that it was facing a deadly new scourge: a chronic brain disease that was driving an alarming number of players—including some of the all-time greats—to madness. In League of Denial, award-winning ESPN investigative reporters Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru tell the story of a public health crisis that emerged from the playing fields of our twenty-first-century pastime. Everyone knows that football is violent and dangerous. But what the players who built the NFL into a $10 billion industry didn’t know—and what the league sought to shield from them—is that no amount of padding could protect the human brain from the force generated by modern football, that the very essence of the game could be exposing these players to brain damage. In a fast-paced narrative that moves between the NFL trenches, America’s research labs, and the boardrooms where the NFL went to war against science, League of Denial examines how the league used its power and resources to attack independent scientists and elevate its own flawed research—a campaign with echoes of Big Tobacco’s fight to deny the connection between smoking and lung cancer. It chronicles the tragic fates of players like Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Steelers center Mike Webster, who was so disturbed at the time of his death he fantasized about shooting NFL executives, and former San Diego Chargers great Junior Seau, whose diseased brain became the target of an unseemly scientific battle between researchers and the NFL. Based on exclusive interviews, previously undisclosed documents, and private emails, this is the story of what the NFL knew and when it knew it—questions at the heart of a crisis that threatens football, from the highest levels all the way down to Pop Warner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New media technologies have become a central part of the sports media landscape. Sports fans use new media to watch games, discuss sports transactions, form fan-based communities, and secure minutiae about their favorite players and teams. Never before have fans known so much about athletes, whether that happens via Twitter feeds, fan sites, or blogs, and never before have the lines between producer, consumer, enactor, fan and athlete been more blurred. The Internet has made virtually everything available for sports media consumption; it has also made understanding sports media substantially more complex. The Routledge Handbook of Sport and New Media is the most comprehensive and in-depth study of the impact of new media in sport ever to be published. Adopting a broad, interdisciplinary approach, the book explores new media in sport as a cultural, social, commercial, economic, and technological phenomenon, examining the profound impact of digital technologies on that the way that sport is produced, consumed and understood. There is no aspect of social life or commercial activity in general that is not being radically influenced by the rise of new media forms, and by offering a "state of the field" survey of work in this area, the Routledge Handbook of Sport and New Media is important reading for any advanced student, researcher or practitioner with an interest in sports studies, media studies or communication studies.

Book excerpt: This quick-reading, adult fiction novel takes place at the start of Ezra’s junior year of High School and ends just as he heads off to his first year of college. The story is told as if reading Ezra’s actual journal. Ezra is not your typical All-Star American quarterback. He has just joined the varsity team of his 5A high school. He is beloved by almost everyone who knows him & football is his life. Threatening his picture-perfect life are his grades. He shines in English, choir, drama & art. However, advanced mathematics and science are not his thing. With his grades threatening to bench him during his undefeated high school football season. He must make some real changes to get his grades up. So that, he can continue to do what he loves. Enter his tutor, Maxim. This isn’t your average coming-of-age story. This is a steamy and chaotic time for Ezra. As he explores his hormonal desires, he is thrust into a world of sex, drugs, and parties. He almost loses himself and has got to find his way back to winning. Will he find himself? Will he find love or will everything he has worked so hard for come crashing down in defeat? How will he overcome the obstacles set before him? This book is the first of the Couture Confessional Series. An anthology of stand-alone books featuring varied themes all told in journal or diary format in the vein of Go Ask Alice & Jay’s Journal. Early Access Reviews: “A steamy wild ride” – Kevin (Beta Reader) “I don’t even like sports usually & I’m hooked” – Jessica (Beta Reader) “I love the way this is so uniquely done & the ending is beautiful” – Carlo (Beta Reader) “This was awesome! I cannot wait to see what the next story brings” – Allison (Beta Reader) “Keep your socks on guys! So, Ezra can blow them off & keep them. Wow, just wow. This book got me hot under the collar” – Aaron (Beta Reader) A note from the author: I am beyond pleased with the results of this work. I had a dream one night of this lovely young man who had his faults but had a beautiful soul. I feel like this work captured him completely. I wanted to do this in a diary or journal format because I felt like it was the best way to convey the dream as I experienced it. Then as I awoke the idea to make a series of diaries came to mind. Each tells a portion of someone’s life. A hidden portion that is being brought out into the light. Ezra brought out a portion of my memories that I had thought lost. I hope readers of this work find joy and pleasure in their experience with Ezra. I cannot wait to find out what stories arise from within. I also hope the overall tone and feel of this book helps someone else along in their journey of self-discovery. - Jeremy Couture

Extensively updated and substantially reorganized, this third edition reflects the evolution of the field with modern applications across a wide range of media channels. The book’s topics align with the Common Professional Component topics outlined by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA). The author team brings together significant professional and educational backgrounds in sport public relations to offer an engaging look at the full range of public relations functions. Readers will learn the importance of consistent brand communication and how to manage organizational relationships, both internal and external, to attain key strategic goals. The thorough coverage of the field is built around three common themes: Public relations is a managerial function focused on advancing the brand and engaging key stakeholders. The communications environment is continuously evolving. Community relations, employee relations, and donor relations are as critical as media relations within the sport industry. Woven throughout these themes are public relations theories applied in sport-specific contexts to help students further understand the complexity of the sport communication ecosystem. Throughout the book, there is guidance for practical application, including samples of public relations materials such as news releases and employee newsletters. Be Your Own Media sidebars highlight how sport organizations are proactively telling their stories across various media platforms. New to this edition, case studies and discussion questions serve as a foundation for additional learning. Other updates include the following: Discussion of engaging key publics through social media and other forms of digital media—such as blogs, podcasts, virtual fan communities, and video—as well as approaches to developing content, metrics for measuring success, and skills for managing media in sport An examination of customer experience (CX) and how to enhance those relationships by defining customer touch points and mapping the customer journey Considerations for social media usage during crisis communication, with modern examples of effective and ineffective ways prominent sport entities have managed recent crises Also new to the third edition are related online learning aids delivered through HKPropel and designed to generate discussion and highlight the opportunities and challenges that exist in sport public relations. Commentary on current topics is accompanied by links to associated content, discussion questions, and applied learning activities to promote engaged student learning. A live Twitter feed for specific hashtags within HKPropel ensures regular updates. With Sport Public Relations, Third Edition, students will better understand the various demands of the field and learn to successfully and proactively develop consistent communication and stronger relationships between sport organizations and their key publics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an inter-disciplinary examination of the relationship between sport, spirituality and religion. It covers a wide-range of topics, such as prayer and sport, religious and spiritual perspectives on athletic identity and ‘flow’ in sport, theological analysis of genetic performance enhancement technologies, sectarianism in Scottish football, a spiritual understanding of sport psychology consultancy in English premiership soccer and how Zen may be useful in sports performance and participation. As modern sport is often intertwined with commercial and political agendas, this book also provides an important corrective to the “win at all costs” culture of modern sport, which cannot always be fully understood through secular ethical inquiry. This is a unique and important addition to the current literature for a wide-range of fields including theology and religious studies, psychology, health studies, ethics and sports studies.

Book excerpt: A 2022 Choice Reviews Outstanding Academic Title Dispels the myths surrounding head impacts in youth sports and empowers parents to make informed decisions about sports participation “They’re just little kids, they don’t hit that hard or that much.” “Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) only happens to former NFL players.” “Youth sports are safer than ever.” These are all myths which, if believed, put young, rapidly maturing brains at risk each season. In The Brain on Youth Sports: The Science, the Myths, and the Future, Julie M. Stamm dissects the issue of repetitive brain trauma in youth sports and their health consequences, explaining the science behind impacts to the head in an easy-to-understand approach. Stamm counters the myths, weak arguments, and propaganda surrounding the youth sports industry, providing guidance for those deciding whether their child should play certain high-risk sports as well as for those hoping to make youth sports as safe as possible. Stamm, a former three-sport athlete herself, understands the many wonderful benefits that come from playing youth sports and believes all children should have the opportunity to compete—without the risk of long-term consequences.

Book excerpt: Every athlete who spends time in the weight room eventually deals with pain/injury that leaves them frustrated and unable to reach their highest potential. Every athlete ought to have the ability to take the first steps at addressing these minor injuries. They shouldn’t have to wait weeks for a doctor’s appointment, only to be prescribed pain medications and told to “take two weeks off lifting” or, even worse, to “stop lifting so heavy.” Dr. Aaron Horschig knows your pain and frustration. He’s been there. For over a decade, Dr. Horschig has been a competitive weightlifter, and he understands how discouraging it is to tweak your back three weeks out from a huge weightlifting competition, to have knee pain limit your ability to squat heavy for weeks, and to suffer from chronic shoulder issues that keep you from reaching your goals. Rebuilding Milo is the culmination of Dr. Horschig’s life’s work as a sports physical therapist, certified strength and conditioning specialist, and Olympic weightlifting coach. It contains all of the knowledge he has amassed over the past decade while helping some of the best athletes in the world. Now he wants to share that knowledge with you. This book, designed by a strength athlete for anyone who spends time in the weight room, is the solution to your struggles with injury and pain. It walks you through simple tests and screens to uncover the movement problem at the root of your pain. After discovering the cause of your injury, you’ll be able to create an individualized rehab program as laid out in this book. Finally, you’ll be on the right path to eliminate your pain and return to the activities you love.
