Book excerpt: A comprehensive encyclopedia covering the close ties between Britain and the whole of the Americas, examining Britain's cultural and political legacy to the nations of the New World. From Vikings to redcoats, from the Beatles to the war in Iraq, Britain and the Americas examines Britain's cultural and political legacy to the nations of the Americas. This comprehensive survey also traces how the Americas have in turn influenced contemporary Britain from the Americanization of language and politics to the impact of music and migration from the West Indies. Complete with an extensive introduction and a chronology of key events, this three-volume encyclopedia contains introductory essays focusing on the four prime areas of British Atlantic engagement—Canada, the Caribbean, the United States, and Latin America. Students of a wide range of disciplines, as well as the lay reader, will appreciate this exhaustive survey, which traces the common themes of British policy and influence throughout the Americas and highlights how Britain has in turn benefited from the influence of American democracy, technology, culture and politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first full critical history of incognito social investigation texts – in other words, works detailing their authors’ experiences whilst pretending to be poor. The most famous example is Down and Out in Paris and London, but there has been a vast array of other works in the genre since it was created in 1866 by James Greenwood’s ‘A Night in a Workhouse’. It draws up a classification of incognito social investigation texts, dividing them into four subtypes. The first comprises those texts following most narrowly in James Greenwood’s footsteps, taking the extreme poor as their object of study. The next is the investigation of poverty through walking, for pedestrianism and poverty are fascinatingly linked. The third is that of people looking at relative poverty rather than absolute, where authors take on badly-paid work in order to report on it, which is when incognito social investigation becomes very much something carried out by women. We end looking at those incognito social investigators who settled in the areas they explored. Not only will this book recover the history of a genre that has long been ignored, however, but it will also offer significant close reading of many of the texts that it places within the tradition(s) it discovers.

Book excerpt: mo.ped /moh-ped/ noun 1. A low-power, lightweight motorized bicycle that can be pedalled. Two brothers moped their way into adventures through Europe in the mid-1950's on $5 a day. They meet the natives, fight the elements, the topography and swear at their machines while getting to their?destination. Along the way, they encounter friends and foes; they learn about the high price for running over a farmer's laying hen in Belgium; go where no tourist is supposed to go in Italy; walk in the night mist with Irish tinkers; challenge Franco's Spanish Guardia Civil; converse in a language unknown to man, while under the influence with Portuguese University students; are entertained by recollections of America by a retired Free French aviator; cross the Austrian Alps in a howling snowstorm with red-hot engines, as they daily move into new territory. Dick and Bill Lynam's peripatetic journey across Western Europe is filled with observations, anecdotal comments, reflections on the people, and summaries of current and recent history and political events in the countries they visited.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a penetrating anthropological study of the working poor in India, Jan Breman examines the lives of those who, pushed out of the agrarian labour market, depend on casual work. Beginning his local-level research in two villages in south Gujarat, the author discusses the mobilisation of casual labour, which is hired and fired according to the need of the moment, and transferred for the duration of the job to destinations far away from the home area. His case-study reveals that the circulation of labour is indicative of an employment pattern which dominates both the rural and urban economy of large parts of South Asia. Elaborating on the social profile of the work migrants, the author argues that their identity is shaped by both class and caste relations and, despite action by state agencies, nothing of significance has been achieved to improve their quality of life.
