Book excerpt: Transplant recipients are on immunosuppressive drugs which maintain the transplanted organ function but can expose them to increased risk of foodborne illnesses. Transplant recipients that are affected with a foodborne illness are more likely to have a lengthier illness, undergo hospitalization, or even die. The RD is needed to educate transplant recipients post-transplant but continued reinforcement is needed in the post-transplant phase. Therefore, educating clinical staff working directly with transplant recipients is important for continued accurate relay of information. The study used a quasi-experimental, pre/post-test design, with a convenience population of the direct patient care clinical staff of the organ transplant center who treat organ transplant recipients. The 6 participants were Registered Nurses, African American and Caucasian females between the ages of 30-60 years old. Results showed a 37.6% increase in mean knowledge score, with all subjects improving their scores from pre-test to post-test. This demonstrates that a nutrition education in-service is effective with transplant professionals with the possibility of using this format for other nutrition-related needs or ongoing education. Further research is needed to investigate the influence of RD-provided in-service education and its effects on patient compliance and post-transplant outcomes.
