This book was released on 1979 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retail food prices in the United States rose an average of over 9 percent annually from 1973 to 1979. The reasons these increases occurred and what can be done to slow the rate of increase are examined. They also provide an overview of the food delivery system. Substantially reducing the upward movement in food prices will require the same long-term effort needed to reduce general inflation. In addition, actions to reduce the volatility in commodity prices and commodity trade flows also appear needed.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A USDA report summarizes the causes of food price inflation. Retail food prices in the United States rose over90% annually from 1973 to 1979. Increases in prices result from higher farm-level commodity prices and higher marketingcosts. Food production costs, trade policies, food marketing costs, and structural changes are controllable in varying degrees. Control of fluctuations due to weather and the biological nature of food production processes is unlikely. Consumers are partially responsible for food priceincreases through rising incomes and changing lifestyles. Reduction of the upward movement in food prices will requirea long-term effort. The Government, food industry, and consumers can slow price increases by 1) supporting programsto reduce inflation rate; 2) encouraging price competition; 3) encouraging consumer nutrition education; 4) stabilizing trade flows; 5) reviewing regulations; 6) eliminating labor practices and policies that limit savings; 7) encouraging new technology, especially packaging, adoption.

Book Synopsis Legal Strategies in Childhood Obesity Prevention by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Legal Strategies in Childhood Obesity Prevention written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-08-08 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1980, childhood obesity rates have more than tripled in the United States. Recent data show that almost one-third of children over 2 years of age are already overweight or obese. While the prevalence of childhood obesity appears to have plateaued in recent years, the magnitude of the problem remains unsustainably high and represents an enormous public health concern. All options for addressing the childhood obesity epidemic must therefore be explored. In the United States, legal approaches have successfully reduced other threats to public health, such as the lack of passive restraints in automobiles and the use of tobacco. The question then arises of whether laws, regulations, and litigation can likewise be used to change practices and policies that contribute to obesity. On October 21, 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) held a workshop to bring together stakeholders to discuss the current and future legal strategies aimed at combating childhood obesity. Legal Strategies in Childhood Obesity Prevention summarizes the proceedings of that workshop. The report examines the challenges involved in implementing public health initiatives by using legal strategies to elicit change. It also discusses circumstances in which legal strategies are needed and effective. This workshop was created only to explore the boundaries of potential legal approaches to address childhood obesity, and therefore, does not contain recommendations for the use of such approaches.

Book Synopsis Critical Perspectives on Food Sovereignty by : Marc Edelman
Download or read book Critical Perspectives on Food Sovereignty written by Marc Edelman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a pioneering contribution to the study of food politics and critical agrarian studies, where food sovereignty has emerged as a pivotal concept over the past few decades, with a wide variety of social movements, on-the-ground experiments, and policy innovations flying under its broad banner. Despite its large and growing popularity, the history, theoretical foundations, and political program of food sovereignty have only occasionally received in-depth analysis and critical scrutiny. This collection brings together both longstanding scholars in critical agrarian studies, such as Philip McMichael, Bina Agarwal, Henry Bernstein, Jan Douwe van der Ploeg, and Marc Edelman, as well as a dynamic roster of early- and mid-career researchers. The ultimate aim is to advance this important frontier of research and organizing, and put food sovereignty on stronger footing as a mobilizing frame, a policy objective, and a plan of action for the human future. This volume was published as part one of the special double issue celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Journal of Peasant Studies.

Book Synopsis Looking at edible insects from a food safety perspective by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

This book was released on 2021-04-09 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While insect consumption by humans or entomophagy has been traditionally practiced in various countries over generations and represents a common dietary component of various animal species (birds, fish, mammals), farming of insects for human food and animal feed is relatively recent. Production of this ‘mini-livestock’ brings with it several potential benefits and challenges. The objective of this document is to provide the reader with an overview of the various food safety issues that could be associated with edible insects. The intended audiences of this publication are food safety professionals, policymakers, researchers, insect producers as well as consumers. The regulatory frameworks that govern production, trade and consumption of insects in various regions are discussed. The document ends with elucidating some other major challenges, such as consumer acceptance and scaling up production, that the edible insect industry would need to overcome to have a more global reach.
