Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food of the Woodpeckers of the United States No period in the life history of a tree is exempt from insect attack, and every part, from the smallest roots to the terminal buds, leaves, flowers, and fruit, may be infested by one or many species. The seed in the ground, the tender shoots of both roots and stems, and the young seedling to the matured tree, may be attacked by special ene mies which injure or destroy different parts of the entire plant. In fact, living, dis eased, dead, or decaying, a tree may be the home of hundreds of species and thousands of individuals of insect life.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food of the Robins and Bluebirds of the United States Few native American birds are more universally cherished than those well-known harbingers of spring, the robins and bluebirds. On esthetic grounds alone they receive full protection, partly from the romance that clusters about them in story and legend and partly because of their graceful shape and movement, bright color and pleasing song, and close association with man and his works. Quick to realize their safety the birds nest and rear their young about human abodes, and at times becomes very abundant, their numbers frequently reaching such proportions that apprehension is felt that they may become dangerous to agriculture and horticulture. A study of their economic status therefore. Is of the utmost importance, especially when it is considered that a bird's reputation is very often affected one way or the other merely by hearsay evidence. Investigation discloses that in addition to their pleasing qualities robins and bluebirds perform a very useful function in reducing the hordes of insect life constantly preying upon the crops of the farmer. In this work a large part of their food consists of insects and they feed their young upon them almost exclusively. It is recognized that birds are one of the necessary checks provided by nature upon the increase of the vast number of insects produced each year; that without them there would be a greater destruction of vegetation; and that certain crops of the farmer now regularly matured would, if raised at all, be raised only with increased di roulty and added labor. Prominent among the insect eaters are the thrushes, the group which includes the robins and bluebirds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woodpeckers in Relation to Trees and Wood Products Woodpeckers are peculiarly dependent upon trees, which furnish them food, shelter, and cradles for their young. No birds are more highly specialized nor more perfectly adapted to a particular mode of life than are most woodpeckers to arboreal existence. Moreover, as trees are important to woodpeckers, so are these birds important to trees. Woodpeckers benefit trees by consuming many of the most destructive forest pests, insects largely inaccessible to other birds. In securing these insects, however, which constitute the bulk of their food, and in making nests and shelter cavities, woodpeckers have another significant economic relation to trees, for they remove bark and wood from both dead and living trees. In the case of dead trees little or no harm is done. When, however, they make excavations in living trees, the birds destroy more or less of the cambium layer, from which proceeds the growth of both wood and bark. Slight injuries to the cambium result in distorted growth, but the destruction of large areas may cause death. Since trees are exceedingly valuable to man, the habits Of birds whose relations to trees are so vital are Of much economlc Importance. It is the purpose of this bulletin to examine the evidence for and against woodpeckers and to determine their status according to the effect Of their habits upon trees and wood products. Injuries by woodpeckers are treated under two heads: (1) Damage by wood peckers in general; (2) injuries due almost exclusively to the three species properly known as sapsuckers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food Habits of Some Winter Bird Visitants The lar e beak and the contrasting plumage of yellow, black, and white maie the evening grosbeak an easily recognized species. Breeding in the western United States and Canada, during the winter it is occasionally seized with a wandering impulse which carries it east to New York, Pennsylvania, and adjacent States. Usually, however, it chooses to spend this season in the West, wandering over the country in flocks of varying numbers. For the study of the food habits of this grosbeak, 127 stomachs collected in 14 States and Canada were available. Of these 88 were taken in the winter months (october to March, inclusive), or at the time when the birds commonly appear about human habitations. The remaining 39 were taken in summer. Winter food. - Ornithologists who have been fortunate enough to observe this interesting bird report that the chief elements in the diet are various kinds of wild fruit, seeds of ash, maple, box elder, and conifers, and buds. Except for this last item these observa tions are verified by stomach examination. No buds were found in the stomachs, and this seems to indicate that the bud-eating habit is not so general as has been supposed. It is worthy of note that about 50 stomachs taken in Ontario in the winter of 1889 - 90, and examined by various members of the Canadian Institute, contained no buds.2 It was found that seeds of several different trees and shrubs constituted the food supply of the birds while they re mained in that locality.
