Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk Dancing The first essential for a successful folk dancing experience lies in the teacher him self. He must -be enthusiastic and sympathetic. He must be tolerant and patient with those who are slow to learn, for occasionally an individual feels he has no sense of rhythm and is discouraged because he does not enjoy the dances. It is the teacher's task to develop, not a sense of rhythm - for every normal human being has that - but the mus cular coordination necessary to express the rhythm. Everyone responds to rhythm, though the response for some persons is only within. There are many ways to help the individual develop a muscular response to rhythm. He may dance with the teacher or with a student who dances well so that wrong patterns do not become fixed. He may be given special instruction, at which time steps may be taken Slowly until the patterns become learned, then gradually increased until the dance is done in the correct tempo. The teacher Should give as much individual instruction as possible at the beginning of the folk dance unit in order that Slow learners may keep up with the group and not become discouraged. Each teacher will develop his own individual technique for presenting a dance, for starting the musician and the dancers. One much used way to Start the dance is to say, Ready with the music - and. Simultaneously with the word and the accompanist and the dancers begin the dance. Inaccuracy in rhythmic response results if dancers are Slow in beginning the first Step because they wait to hear the first notes before starting the dance. Some music is arranged in such a way that there 13 an anacrusis, a pick up note. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Swedish Folk Dances Thus the folk dance has come to signify the revival of the expression of old fundamental rural impulses, pure and lovely as the sunshine of the fields. The general European revival and our own use of the folk dance is an expres sion of this deep-rooted longing. In New York City dancing has taken its legitimate place in the education and recreation of the children in the schools. There the dances have lightened the formal gymnastics with a natural interest, and have returned large values in a normal joyous expression of fundamental impulses. These Old American folk dances, which have never died out, have revived and spread from backwoods and mountains and plains into the cities again. Yet nothing seems to be known wherice they came originally and how they developed into what they are. For some years now, I have been gathering information from Old dance-books, town chronicles, newspapers, novels of the Old times, even poetry and sheet-music, with results which have fitted together into an outline-history of this forgotten phase of our culture. This history is not unamus ing, pivoting as it does, now upon some great revolution, and again upon so trivial a matter as a change of style in ladies' skirts. For the history of square-dancing is an expression of the ever-chang. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk Dances for Young People; With Explanatory Text, Diagrams and Photographic Illustrations: Adapted for the Use of Schools, Playgrounds and Other Organizations of Children in the United States The song-dances in this book are adapted to American needs from Swedish, Danish and Norwegian originals. The words are translated as closely as exigencies of meter Will allow. The airs are well Within the limited compass of children's voices. The people with whom these song-dances originated, some dances dating as far back as the sixteenth century, use only the melody, occasionally assisted by a fiddle or an accordion; but to meet the demands of the American school, a tuneful piano accompaniment is added. The original text is published by Prof. O. Helgren, principal of the public schools in Filip stad and a member of the faculty of the College at Naas, Sweden. Thither go young women from many countries, for instruction in scientific physical training. Prof. Helgren posed Swedish school-children for the pictures in this book and the dia grams to illustrate the dances have his approval. Never was the primitive love of dancing stronger than now. In dancing, as in music and literature, a sound taste is best assured when the cultivation of it begins early. Any dance in this book is suitable for children's entertainment; they are instructive, wholesome and sweet. This collection of song-dances, the most complete ever published, will be found useful in public and private schools as a pleasant addition to the regular courses in physical training, play-grounds and school-centers in general. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dances of Poland Our folk dances have had a continuous, robust life and are especially popular between Christmas and Easter when farm work is almost at a standstill, our winters being long and severe. Many of our dances have been lost to us in course of the centuries but we still possess a large number, indicative of our love of music and dancing. Poland has had a troublous history, her geographical situation laying her open to perpetual movement between East and West. The country, so easily traversed, can be divided into regions fairly simple to delineate, and the dances of Poland can conveniently be related to these regions. Those of each geographical region have common characteristics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
