Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DANS CETTE THESE, NOUS PRESENTONS, DANS UN PREMIER TEMPS, LA METHODE DE BOLTZMANN SUR RESEAU COMME UNE METHODE DE RELAXATION DE POPULATIONS DE PARTICULES VERS UN ETAT D'EQUILIBRE. PUIS, DANS UN DEUXIEME TEMPS, NOUS ETUDIONS L'IMPACT DES TEMPS DE RELAXATION DE CES POPULATIONS SUR L'INTRODUCTION DE CONDITIONS AUX LIMITES SIMULANT DES PAROIS SOLIDES. NOUS EN DEDUISONS UNE LOI PERMETTANT DE CHOISIR CES TEMPS DE RELAXATION POUR QUE LA POSITION EFFECTIVE DES PAROIS N'EN DEPENDE PLUS. ENSUITE, EN DOUBLANT LE NOMBRE DE MOMENTS NECESSAIRES A L'INTRODUCTION D'EFFETS VISQUEUX ET EN LEUR DONNANT DES TEMPS DE RELAXATION TRES LONG, NOUS CONSTRUISONS DEUX MODELES ISOTROPES PERMETTANT DE SIMULER DES FLUIDES VISCOELASTIQUES DE TYPE JEFFREYS. DE NOMBREUSES SIMULATIONS NUMERIQUES ONT PERMIS DE VALIDER CE TYPE DE COMPORTEMENT. ENFIN, DANS UNE DERNIERE PARTIE, NOUS INTRODUISONS UNE VARIANTE DU DEVELOPPEMENT DE CHAPMAN-ENSKOG. ELLE NOUS PERMET D'EXHIBER UNE EQUATION DE COMPORTEMENT DE NOTRE FLUIDE. CELLE-CI S'AVERE ETRE, D'AILLEURS, TRES PROCHE DE CELLE D'UN FLUIDE VISCO-ELASTIQUE DE TYPE JEFFREYS. NOUS DONNONS, EN OUTRE, DES AXES DE RECHERCHE POUR INTRODUIRE DES DERIVEES CONVECTIVES, AINSI QUE POUR INTRODUIRE DES EFFETS DE VISCOSITE VARIANT AVEC LE CISAILLEMENT.

Book excerpt: LES TRAVAUX PRESENTES DANS CETTE THESE CONCERNENT LA SIMULATION NUMERIQUE D'ECOULEMENTS INCOMPRESSIBLES ET PERMANENTS DE FLUIDES NON NEWTONIENS, NOTAMMENT VISCOELASTIQUES, EN PRESENCE DE FORCES D'INERTIE NON NEGLIGEABLES. LES PRINCIPALES CARACTERISTIQUES DE L'APPROCHE PROPOSEE RESIDENT DANS LE CHOIX DU PROCEDE ITERATIF ET DE LA METHODE DE DISCRETISATION. NOUS UTILISONS UN ALGORITHME DE TYPE POINT-SELLE OU LA CONDITION D'INCOMPRESSIBILITE EST DEFINIE COMME LA CONTRAINTE EGALITE D'UN PROBLEME DE MINIMISATION. LA METHODE DES VOLUMES FINIS EST DEVELOPPEE POUR DISCRETISER L'ENSEMBLE DES EQUATIONS DU MOUVEMENT ET DE COMPORTEMENT. LES APPLICATIONS DE L'APPROCHE INCLUENT EN PREMIER LIEU L'ECOULEMENT DANS UN CONVERGENT PLAN QUATRE:UN. LA SECONDE ETUDE CONCERNE L'ECOULEMENT DU MODELE VISCOELASTIQUE D'OLDROYD-B AUTOUR D'UN OBSTACLE DE SECTION CARREE PLACE DANS UNE CONDUITE. LES DIFFERENTS CALCULS MENES ONT MIS EN EVIDENCE L'INFLUENCE DES FORCES D'INERTIE ET DU TAUX D'ELASTICITE SUR LA STRUCTURE DE L'ECOULEMENT

DANS LE PREMIER CHAPITRE NOUS CONSIDERONS LE PROBLEME DE BENARD EN EVOLUTION POUR UN FLUIDE VISCOELASTIQUE DE TYPE PHAN-THIEN TANNER, MAIS LES RESULTATS SE GENERALISENT POUR D'AUTRES LOIS DE COMPORTEMENT. NOUS MONTRONS, POUR DES ETATS PROCHES DE L'ETAT PROCHES DE L'ETAT DE PURE CONVECTION, L'EXISTENCE LOCALE ET L'UNICITE DE SOLUTION, PUIS L'EXISTENCE GLOBALE POUR DES NOMBES DE RAYLEIGH PETITS. LA SECONDE PARTIE EST CONSACREE A L'ETUDE NUMERIQUE D'UN FLUIDE DE TYPE MAXWELL DANS UN CANAL AUX PAROIS ONDULES DANS LE CADRE STATIONNAIRE. NOUS UTILISONS LA FORMULATION DE FONCTION DE COURANT-VORTICITE-CONTRAINTES AFIN DE METTRE EN EVIDENCE LE CHANGEMENT DE TYPE APPARAISSANT DANS L'EQUATION DE LA VORTICITE. DEUX DIRECTIONS SONT ALORS PROPOSEES. UNE METHODE DE PERTURBATION EST MISE EN UVRE DANS LE CHAPITRE II AFIN DE NOUS RAMENER A LA RESOLUTION D'UN PROBLEME LINEAIRE. LE CHAPITRE III EST CONSACRE A L'ETUDE DE CE PROBLEME NON LINEAIRE PAR UNE METHODE DE TYPE NEWTON ET UNE METHODE DE POINT FIXE. DIFFERENTES ILLUSTRATIONS SONT PRODUITES AU COURS DE CETTE PARTIE

Book excerpt: ON ETUDIE DANS CE TRAVAIL LA METHODE DES CARACTERISTIQUES: SES LIENS AVEC LA METHODE DE GALERKIN DISCONTINUE, SON UTILISATION POUR L'APPROXIMATION DES ECOULEMENTS DE FLUIDES VISCOELASTIQUES (PARTICULIEREMENT LES MODELES DIFFERENTIELS, MAIS UNE METHODE POUR LES MODELES INTEGRAUX EST EGALEMENT PRESENTEE). DANS LE CHAPITRE 1, ON PRESENTE UNE DESCRIPTION DE LA METHODE DES CARACTERISTIQUES POUR UN PROBLEME DE TRANSPORT SOUS SES DEUX FORMES, FAIBLE ET FORTE. A PARTIR D'UN PROBLEME DE CONVECTION STATIONNAIRE (P), NOUS DEFINISSONS, A L'AIDE DE CETTE METHODE, UN PROBLEME (P#K), DONT ON DEMONTRE L'EXISTENCE ET L'UNICITE D'UNE SOLUTION DANS LE CAS OU LA DIVERGENCE DE LA VITESSE EST NULLE. ON OBTIENT UNE MAJORATION D'ERREUR. ON DONNE LE LIEN FORMEL ENTRE LA METHODE DE GALERKIN DISCONTINUE ET LA METHODE DES CARACTERISTIQUES. DANS LE CHAPITRE 2, ON CONSIDERE, POUR L'EQUATION DE CONVECTION STATIONNAIRE A UNE VARIABLE, LA METHODE DES CARACTERISTIQUES DE PSEUDO-PAS DE TEMPS K AVEC APPROXIMATION DE L'INCONNUE PAR DES ELEMENTS FINIS P#R DISCONTINUS SUR UN MAILLAGE T#H. ON CONSTRUIT, POUR CETTE METHODE, UNE NORME NATURELLE NOTEE #H#,#K, POUR LAQUELLE ON MONTRE QUE LE PROBLEME VARIATIONNEL APPROCHE (P#K#H) EST BIEN POSE ET ON OBTIENT UNE MAJORATION D'ERREUR. ON MONTRE QUE, QUAND K TEND VERS ZERO, LE PROBLEME (P#K#H) (RESP. LA NORME #H#,#K) A POUR LIMITE LE PROBLEME (P#H) (RESP. LA NORME #H), ASSOCIE A LA METHODE DE GALERKIN DISCONTINUE. DANS LE CHAPITRE 3, ON PRESENTE UNE DESCRIPTION DES METHODES D'ELEMENTS FINIS POUR LA SIMULATION D'ECOULEMENTS VISCOELASTIQUES OBEISSANT A DES LOIS DIFFERENTIELLES ET INTEGRALES. DANS LE CHAPITRE 4, ON DEMONTRE QUE LE PROBLEME (P#K), DEFINI AU CHAPITRE 1, ADMET UNE SOLUTION UNIQUE DANS LE CAS OU LA DIVERGENCE DE LA VITESSE EST NON NULLE ET ON DONNE UNE MAJORATION D'ERREUR. ON ETUDIE UNE APPROXIMATION PAR ELEMENTS FINIS D'ECOULEMENTS DE FLUIDES VISCOELASTIQUES REGIS PAR UNE LOI DE COMPORTEMENT DIFFERENTIELLE DE TYPE OLDROYD B. LES APPROXIMATIONS DES CONTRAINTES, DES VITESSES ET DES PRESSIONS SONT RESPECTIVEMENT P#1-DISCONTINUES, P#2-CONTINUES, P#1-CONTINUES. LA CONVECTION DES CONTRAINTES EST TRAITEE PAR LA METHODE DES CARACTERISTIQUES. ON FAIT L'HYPOTHESE QUE LE PROBLEME D'OLDROYD ADMET UNE SOLUTION SUFFISAMMENT REGULIERE ET SUFFISAMMENT PETITE. ON MONTRE PAR UNE METHODE DE POINT FIXE QU'UN PROBLEME SEMI-LINEARISE APPROCHE A UNE SOLUTION ET ON DONNE UNE MAJORATION D'ERREUR. ENFIN, DANS LE CHAPITRE 5, ON DONNE UNE METHODE NUMERIQUE POUR LE CALCUL D'ECOULEMENTS DE FLUIDES VICOELASTIQUES INSTATIONNAIRES REGIS PAR UNE LOI INTEGRALE DE TYPE OLDROYD B, EN UTILISANT LA METHODE DES CARACTERISTIQUES

Book excerpt: Presenting a unified approach, this book focusses on the concepts and theoretical methods that are necessary for an understanding of the physics and chemistry of the fluid state. The authors do not attempt to cover the whole field in an encyclopedic manner. Instead, important ideas are presented in a concise and rigorous style, and illustrated with examples from both simple molecular liquids and more complex soft condensed matter systems such as polymers, colloids, and liquid crystals.

Book excerpt: In this book, leading scientists in the fields of sensory biology, neuroscience, physics and engineering explore the basic operational principles and behavioral uses of flow sensing in animals and how they might be applied to engineering applications such as autonomous control of underwater or aerial vehicles. Although humans possess no flow-sensing abilities, countless aquatic (e.g. fish, cephalopods and seals), terrestrial (e.g. crickets and spiders) and aerial (e.g. bats) animals have flow sensing abilities that underlie remarkable behavioral feats. These include the ability to follow silent hydrodynamic trails long after the trailblazer has left the scene, to form hydrodynamic images of their environment in total darkness, and to swim or fly efficiently and effortlessly in the face of destabilizing currents and winds.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Book excerpt: A year has passed since Eshel Bresler, my good friend and colleague, and a member of the editorial board of the Advanced Series in Agricultural Sciences, died suddenly while on a visit to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. We had worked together for almost 30 years at the Institute of Soils and Water, ARO, The Volcani Center at Bet Dagan. At the very beginning of our scientific careers we cooperated directly and as a result one of our first publications was coauthored (Soil Sci. 101:205-209, 1966). Thereafter, our specific research interests diver sified, but we continued to work together, with similar approaches to research, and to strive towards the development of Israel soil science and its integration into general worldwide scientific progress. I don't need to emphasize Eshel's contribution to the understan ding of the processes governing water flow and solute transport pro cesses in soils and unsaturated zones. The contributions to this Volume by such a body of outstanding scientists shows the apprecia tion of the international scientific community to his research achievements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical methods play a significant role in the rapidly growing field of nonlinear optical materials. This volume discusses a number of successful or promising contributions. The overall theme of this volume is twofold: (1) the challenges faced in computing and optimizing nonlinear optical material properties; and (2) the exploitation of these properties in important areas of application. These include the design of optical amplifiers and lasers, as well as novel optical switches. Research topics in this volume include how to exploit the magnetooptic effect, how to work with the nonlinear optical response of materials, how to predict laser-induced breakdown in efficient optical devices, and how to handle electron cloud distortion in femtosecond processes.
