Download or read book Fluid Iron written by Tony Day and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2002-08-31 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid Iron is the first extended treatment of state formation in Southeast Asia from early to contemporary times and the first book-length analysis of Western historical and ethnographic writing on the region. It includes critical assessments of the work of Clifford Geertz, O.W. Wolters, Benedict Anderson, and other major scholars who have written on early, colonial, and modern Southeast Asian history and culture. Making use of the ideas of Weber, Marx, Foucault, and postmodern and postcolonial theory, Tony Day argues that culture must be restored to the study of Southeast Asian history so that the state and historical developments in the region can be returned to their own "alternative" historical contexts and trajectories. He employs a wide range of contemporary scholarship, as well as Southeast Asian literary and historical texts, inscriptions, and temples to explore the kinds of concepts and practices--kinship networks, cosmologies, gender identities, bureaucracies, rituals, violence and aesthetics--that have been used for centuries to build states.Highly readable and accessibly written, Fluid Iron demonstrates that Southeast Asian state building has taken place in a part of the world that has always been a crossroads of cultural and transcultural change. Day urges Southeast Asians to learn more about the history of their own state formations so they can safeguard not only human freedom, but also the "incongruity" of their unique region in the years ahead.

This book was released on 2000-10-26 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many books have been written on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and many written on combustion, most contain very limited coverage of the combination of CFD and industrial combustion. Furthermore, most of these books are written at an advanced academic level, emphasize theory over practice, and provide little help to engineers who need

Book Synopsis Fluid Resuscitation by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Fluid Resuscitation written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-11-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, 20% of all injured combatants die on the battlefield before they can be evacuated to a field hospital. Blood lossâ€"hemorrhageâ€"is the single major cause of death among those killed in action whose lives might otherwise be saved. Fluid resuscitation and the treatment of hypovolemia (the abnormally decreased volume of circulating fluid in the body) offer the greatest opportunity for reducing mortality and morbidity associated with battlefield casualties. In Fluid Resuscitation, a committee of experts assess current resuscitation fluids and protocols for the treatment of combat casualties and make recommendations for future research. Chapters focus on the pathophysiology of acute hemorrhagic shock, experience with and complications of fluid resuscitation, novel approaches to the treatment of shock, protocols of care at the site of injury, and future directions for research. The committee explicitly describes the similarities and differences between acute medical care during combat and civilian emergency trauma care. Fluid Resuscitation should help energize and focus research in both civilian and military emergency care and help save the lives of citizens and soldiers alike.

Book Synopsis EBOOK: Fundamentals of Thermal-Fluid Sciences (SI units) by : Yunus Cengel
Download or read book EBOOK: Fundamentals of Thermal-Fluid Sciences (SI units) written by Yunus Cengel and published by McGraw Hill. This book was released on 2012-01-16 with total page 1067 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE FOURTH EDITION IN SI UNITS of Fundamentals of Thermal-Fluid Sciences presents a balanced coverage of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer packaged in a manner suitable for use in introductory thermal sciences courses. By emphasizing the physics and underlying physical phenomena involved, the text gives students practical examples that allow development of an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of thermal sciences. All the popular features of the previous edition are retained in this edition while new ones are added. THIS EDITION FEATURES: A New Chapter on Power and Refrigeration Cycles The new Chapter 9 exposes students to the foundations of power generation and refrigeration in a well-ordered and compact manner. An Early Introduction to the First Law of Thermodynamics (Chapter 3) This chapter establishes a general understanding of energy, mechanisms of energy transfer, and the concept of energy balance, thermo-economics, and conversion efficiency. Learning Objectives Each chapter begins with an overview of the material to be covered and chapter-specific learning objectives to introduce the material and to set goals. Developing Physical Intuition A special effort is made to help students develop an intuitive feel for underlying physical mechanisms of natural phenomena and to gain a mastery of solving practical problems that an engineer is likely to face in the real world. New Problems A large number of problems in the text are modified and many problems are replaced by new ones. Some of the solved examples are also replaced by new ones. Upgraded Artwork Much of the line artwork in the text is upgraded to figures that appear more three-dimensional and realistic. MEDIA RESOURCES: Limited Academic Version of EES with selected text solutions packaged with the text on the Student DVD. The Online Learning Center (www.mheducation.asia/olc/cengelFTFS4e) offers online resources for instructors including PowerPoint® lecture slides, and complete solutions to homework problems.
