Book excerpt: While there are a large number of analytical studies dedicated to developing permeability equations for a 2-D and 3-D models of fibrous disordered structures, there are only few numerical work that compares these models with real counterparts. For the first time, we present a series of numerical simulations performed on real fibrous media obtained via Digital Volumetric Imaging technique. An efficient procedure is presented for reconstructing 3-D images from the 2-D images of real fibrous media and processing them (meshing them) for performing fluid flow simulations. Permeability values obtained from these simulations are compared with those obtained from analytical equations given in the literature. We also present two scale modeling technique to predict macro scale permeability of fibrous structures. Second part of this thesis deals with unsaturated flow through the fibrous media. We start our study by computing the pore size distribution of typical hydroentangled nonwoven materials and present a theoretical model for their geometric pore size distributions based on Poisson line network model of the fibrous media. We also study connectivity of the pore space in fibrous media by computing and comparing the accessible and allowed pore volumes in the form of access function graphs. We also present a novel image-based technique to study the changes in the pore size distribution of a fibrous material exposed to compressive load. A combined micro- and macroscale modeling is presented to simulate the fluid infiltration in fibrous media. The RichardsÃØâ'Ơâ"Ø equation of two-phase flow in porous media is used here to model the fluid absorption in un-saturated fibrous thin sheets. The required consecutive equations, relative permeability and capillary pressure as functions of mediumÃØâ'Ơâ"Øs saturation, are obtained via microscale modeling and long column experiment, respectively. The RichardsÃØâ'Ơâ"Ø equation together with the above consecutive correlations is simultaneous.

Fibrous structures, such as metalfoams, have unique characteristics such as low weight, high porosity, high mechanical strength, and high surface to volume ratio. More importantly, in many applications the fibrous microstructures can be tailored to meet a range of requirements. Therefore, fibrous materials have the potential to be used in emerging sustainable energy conversion applications. The first step for analyzing transport phenomena in porous materials is to determine the micro/macroscopic flow-field inside the medium. In applications where the porous media is confined in a channel, the system performance is tightly related to the flow properties of the porous medium and its interaction with the channel walls, i.e., macroscopic velocity distribution. Therefore, the focus of the study has been on: developing new mechanistic model(s) for determining permeability and inertial coefficient of fibrous porous materials; investigating the effects of microstructural and mechanical parameters such as porosity, fiber orientation, mechanical compression, and fiber distribution on the flow properties and pressure drop of fibrous structures; determining the macroscopic flow-field in confined porous media where the porous structure fills the channel cross-section totally or partially. A systematic approach has been followed to study different aspects of the flow through fibrous materials. The complex microstructure of real materials has been modelled using unit cells that have been assumed to be repeated throughout the media. Implementing various exact and approximate analytical techniques such as integral technique, point matching, blending rules, and scale analysis the flow properties of such media have been modelled; the targeted properties include permeability and inertial coefficient. In addition, fluid flow through microchannels, fully and partially filled with porous media, has been modelled using a volume-averaged equation, which is a novel approach in Microfluidics. To verify the developed models, several testbeds have been designed and experimental studies have been conducted with various fluids and porous materials. The proposed models have been verified with the measured data and the experimental results reported by others.

This work involves the determination of tortuosity using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation and particle tracking analysis. A new method has been adopted to generate 3-D geometry for modeling fibrous porous structures using ANSYSÃ'® Parametric Design Language (APDL). Computation fluid dynamics has been used to simulate permeability of modeled 3-D fiberweb structures. The simulated permeability results are in good agreement with the models proposed by other authors. The experimental results were found to be slightly higher compared to simulated results and existing models due to the layered configuration of the samples. Permeability is found to be significantly influenced by fiber diameter, and porosity as well as fiberweb thickness. The relationship between air permeability and fiberweb thickness has been used to develop an indirect method for determination of tortuosity factor. Tortuosity factor has also been determined using a more direct method involving CFD simulation and Particle Tracking analysis. Different models established using the direct and indirect methods of determination show that tortuosity is significantly influenced by porosity, fiber diameter and fiberweb thickness, whereas the models available in the literature express tortuosity as a function of porosity only.
