The "good folks" trying to save a beautiful bird from extinction say that's what it will cost to save it. To stop the bird's habitat from being destroyed by development, buy up the land with tax money, or confiscate it through regulation. Who cares about the little landowners who worked the land for a lifetime? And why should we care about the people who will never come to our state because housing is too expensive? The new Florida resident unashamedly says, "I've got mine! To Hell with the rest of them!", or the one born here who says "We don't have room for any more people!" When did we get to the point of denying to our fellow Americans the opportunity of home ownership that we hold so dear for ourselves? Rod Gentry sets out to find the facts. Is the bird endangered? And where will the ninety million dollars come from? And where will it end up?

Book excerpt: What exactly is a "Cracker"? An entertaining, informative look at a slice of old Florida culture. Part history, part folklore, Cracker is a generously illustrated account of Cracker heritage, its rich history, and its disappearance as today's fast-paced society reaches even into the remote backwoods of the state. From the language they spoke to the houses they built, from clandestine moonshine stills and cowhunting to "grits and gravy," Dana Ste. Claire offers a colorful and revealing tour of Crackerdom.

Download or read book Okahumpka written by Ray Burhop and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of a town historically important in the development of Florida. By the end of the Nineteenth Century the town appeared to have everything going for it. It was a town which was a major transportation center and generated large quantities of agricultural products such as citrus, ferns, watermelons, naval stores, hardwood lumber, and kaolin from nearby pits. Okahumpka was a stopping off point for tourists from the north and was blessed by a large hotel, which catered to visitors from the north seeking a healthy and warm environment. At one time Okahumpka was as wild as any town in the “Wild West” with Cow Hunters, cattle drives and rustlers, etc. The town was larger, during the mid-nineteenth century, than the communities of Tampa, Leesburg and other present day communities in the area. Yet, by the last half of the Twentieth Century, it had become overrun by nearby Leesburg. Almost all the major buildings would be gone including the depot, stores, post office, schools, taverns, bowling alley and churches. Today, most people know Okahumpka as the name of a rest stop along the nearby Florida Turnpike or the name of an old depot located at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa.

Download or read book The Tropic of Cracker written by Al Burt and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Tropic of Cracker will . . . end the debate once and for all, of whether the term 'Cracker' is derogatory or a source of great pride. Al Burt has a masterpiece here."--Sandra Bogan, Florida Audubon Society From the preface: "The Tropic of Cracker survives in myth, memory, and love of natural Florida. It exists more in the mind than in geography, more in the memory than in the sight, more in attitude than in the encounter. . . . This book tells you about one man's vision of a state struggling to remain true to itself. It mixes new essays with a span of earlier ones written during nearly a quarter century of roving the state as a columnist for the Miami Herald. All of them, in sum, help illuminate and explain the Tropic of Cracker."--Al Burt The crack of the old-time cow hunter's whip gave the native Floridian a nickname, but Al Burt's Tropic of Cracker is a state of mind shared by those who love "what remains of the Florida that needed no blueprint or balance sheet for its creation, that was here before there was a can opener or a commercial or a real-estate agent." In his years of roving the state as a Miami Herald columnist, Al Burt mapped Florida's Tropic of Cracker, not with lines of latitude and longitude but with stories. The Crackers Burt tells of are men and women from Apalachicola to the Everglades, from Tallahassee to the Keys. They lived in the late 1800s, and they live today--along the Ocklawaha and in the floodplains of Lake Okeechobee. They were cow hunters, Conchs, and alligator men. They grew oranges, sugarcane, and muscadine grapes. They made moonshine. They drove mules, ate fried mullet, and told yarns in a Cracker creole about Florida's panthers, snakes, alligators, and hurricanes. There are luminaries among them--Zora Neale Hurston, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Virgil Hawkins, John DeGrove, Harry Crews--but mostly they are just regular folk who mark the borders of the elusive and magical Tropic of Cracker. For anyone who loves the old Florida and still has hope for the new one, Tropic of Cracker is the state's truest road map and Al Burt its most eloquent cartographer. Al Burt worked as a journalist for 45 years, the last 22 at the Miami Herald. The recipient of numerous journalism awards, he has been a freelance contributor to many magazines, including The Nation and Historic Preservation, and is the author of several books, among them Florida: A Place in the Sun (1974), Becalmed in the Mullet Latitudes (1984), and Al Burt's Florida (UPF, 1997), which was awarded the 1998 Patrick D. Smith Florida Literature Book Award. In his honor, the 1,000 Friends of Florida established the annual Al Burt Award for Florida journalism.

Download or read book The Wreckers written by John Viele and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this third book in a series on the history of the Florida Keys, John Viele tells the true story of the Florida Keys wreckers, the daring seamen who sailed out in fair weather or foul to save lives and property from ships cast up on the unforgiving Florida Reef in the passage south of the Florida Keys, one of the most dangerous in the world, having claimed thousands of ships and lives. In the 1850s, the heyday of the wreckers, ships were piling up on the reef at the rate of nearly one a week. Salvaging these wrecks was a highly competitive and hazardous gamble of the lives, limbs, and vessels of the wreckers against an often elusive gain. From the archives of the federal court at Key West, or “wrecking court," and from contemporary letters, diaries, and newspaper articles, the author has captured the drama of the lives and times of the Florida Keys wreckers with accuracy and clarity. Richly illustrated with drawings from nineteenth-century magazines and newspapers, artists' concepts of wrecking scenes, and reproductions of old paintings and photographs, this book will fascinate sailors and landlubbers alike. Book Synopsis Cracker Times and Pioneer Lives by : James M. Denham
Download or read book Cracker Times and Pioneer Lives written by James M. Denham and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild and wooly recollections from the Florida frontier Cracker Times and Pioneer Lives brings together the reminiscences of two pioneers who came of age in antebellum Florida's Columbia County and the nearby Suwannee River Valley. Though they held markedly different positions in society, they shared the adventure, thrill, hardship, and tragedy that characterized Florida's pioneer era. With sensitivity, poignancy, and humor, George Gillett Keen and Sarah Pamela Williams record anecdotes and memories that touch upon important themes of frontier life and reveal the remarkable diversity of Florida's settlers. Keen's story typifies that of many "Cracker" families. Born in Georgia, he moved with his parents to the Florida Territory in 1830 in search of a better life. He grew up in a dangerous yet exciting setting, and as an old man at the turn of the twentieth century recorded his colorful memories with a verve and vernacular reminiscent of the Georgia humorist, Augustus Baldwin Longstreet. Keen writes about subsistence farming, cattle grazing, the Seminole wars, marriage customs, medical practices, politics, the abundance of wildlife, and the paucity of educational opportunities. Admittedly not a Cracker, Sarah Pamela Williams was the daughter of a nationally recognized man of letters. In 1847 she moved to Columbia County's seat of Alligator (Lake City) and later married into one of northeast Florida's prominent planter families. She recorder her recollections of a life brightened by social functions, travel, and cultural endeavors. Offering a rare glimpse into Florida's Civil War homefront, Williams tells of making clothes of homespun, tithing crops to the Confederacy, fearing hostilities just thirteen miles from her home, and surviving as a widow in the lean postwar era. Cracker Times and Pioneer Lives features biographical sketches of more than 280 persons mentioned by Keen and Williams in their writings, many of whom subsequently pioneered settlement in the Florida peninsula.
