Book Synopsis Flexible emission fees by : Magnus Enell
Download or read book Flexible emission fees written by Magnus Enell and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report explores the urgent question of how to transition to a green economy. If the price of pollution becomes the same as the price to not pollute, i.e. the investment required for a non-polluting solution, could market forces be harnessed to create a totally green economy? Would the consumer lead the way if pollution fees were simply credited into everyone's account? Would economic growth and technical development forge ahead? Taking the flexible fee mechanism proposed by Hèglund as a starting point, the report examines the academic literature and presents the results of a workshop where leading Swedish economists and environmentalists examine the issues involved in price discovery mechanisms and call for further developments in this field.
Book Synopsis Two approaches to pricing pollution by : Christina van Breugel
Download or read book Two approaches to pricing pollution written by Christina van Breugel and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report compares the Cap and Trade method with an alternative method, the Flexible Fee Mechanism. The Flexible Fee Mechanism was created as a response to political and other practical obstacles often preventing the efficient application of other methods. The main focus of the Flexible Fee Mechanism is the levying of a fee at the point where a pollution-inducing product enters the economy. The fee is then raised sufficiently (and sufficiently often) to effectively stimulate the transformation of the economy in a sustainable direction. At the same time, the revenue from the fee is directed back into the economy to stimulate alternatives, demand and employment. Still, key questions remain unanswered in this report. This project was launched by the Working Group for SCP (HKP) in collaboration with the Working Group on Environment and Economy (MEG) under the Nordic Council of Ministers.
Book Synopsis Flexible Mechanisms for an Efficient Climate Policy by : Karl L. Brockmann
Download or read book Flexible Mechanisms for an Efficient Climate Policy written by Karl L. Brockmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Kyoto Protocol to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, industrialized countries agreed on binding absolute targets for greenhouse gas emissions and on the admission of flexible market-economy instruments - such as emissions trading, joint implementation and the clean development mechanism - used for reaching the targets. The contributions in this volume reveal that flexible instruments can lower the costs of climate protection considerably - not only in theory, but also in practice. Concerning implementation, it will be necessary to take care of possible loopholes, uncertainties and transaction costs which may be too high if no proper design is chosen.
Book Synopsis Flexible Incentives for the Adoption of Environmental Technologies in Agriculture by : Frank Casey
Download or read book Flexible Incentives for the Adoption of Environmental Technologies in Agriculture written by Frank Casey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flexible Incentives for the Adoption of Environmental Technologies in Agriculture identifies and structures more flexible economic incentives for the achievement of environmental goals in agriculture. It provides a conceptual framework and presents case studies that analyze how flexible incentives can address environmental problems that are caused by agricultural production. The book brings together economists, agency personnel and political economists for the purpose of exploring how new cutting-edge economic tools could be developed and applied to environmental problems. The goal of the book is to complement and to expand the economic theory of environmental regulation and technology adoption with new research findings. The key theme of this book is the important role technology takes when addressing environmental problems. New technologies and technical development are broadly defined to include economic instruments, innovative ways to communicate environmental information, new economic institutions, and education. This book is designed for public and private policymakers, government analysts, teachers, researchers and students who specialize in the fields of natural resources, agricultural economics and environmental regulation. It provides a fresh perspective on what types of incentives may be used to lead us to the desired environmental outcomes and offers new ideas about the types of economic instruments that may achieve these outcomes.

Download or read book Advanced Microeconomic Theory written by Felix Munoz-Garcia and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-08-11 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to advanced topics in microeconomics that emphasizes the intuition behind assumptions and results, providing examples that show how to apply theory to practice. This textbook offers an introduction to advanced microeconomic theory that emphasizes the intuition behind mathematical assumptions, providing step-by-step examples that show how to apply theoretical models. It covers standard topics such as preference relations, demand theory and applications, producer theory, choice under uncertainty, partial and general equilibrium, monopoly, game theory and imperfect competition, externalities and public goods, and contract theory; but its intuitive and application-oriented approach provides students with a bridge to more technical topics. The book can be used by advanced undergraduates as well as Masters students in economics, finance, and public policy, and by PhD students in programs with an applied focus. The text connects each topic with recent findings in behavioral and experimental economics, and discusses these results in context, within the appropriate chapter. Step-by-step examples appear immediately after the main theoretical findings, and end-of chapter exercises help students understand how to approach similar exercises on their own. An appendix reviews basic mathematical concepts. A separate workbook, Practice Exercises for Advanced Microeconomic Theory, offers solutions to selected problems with detailed explanations. The textbook and workbook together help students improve both their theoretical and practical preparation in advanced microeconomics.

Book Synopsis Comparative Environmental Regulation in the United States and Russia by : Lada V. Kochtcheeva
Download or read book Comparative Environmental Regulation in the United States and Russia written by Lada V. Kochtcheeva and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As environmental problems continue to pose a threat to the well-being of people all over the world, achieving pollution control through innovative methods and at a lower cost becomes very attractive. However, cost-effectiveness and technical rationality are often at odds with political goals and policy traditions. Lada V. Kochtcheeva analyzes the introduction of flexible laws and regulations in both air and water quality policies in the United States and the Russian Federation from the 1960s to the present, and highlights the replacement of command and control systems with flexible instruments such as incentive programs, tradable permits, and pollution charges. With its rich comparative institutional analysis, the book contributes to the debate on institutional dynamism, policy innovation, and new modes of regulation, while simultaneously addressing the processes and attributes of good governance.
Book Synopsis Low-Carbon Oriented Improvement Strategy for Flexibility and Resiliency of Multi-Energy Systems by : Yumin Zhang
Download or read book Low-Carbon Oriented Improvement Strategy for Flexibility and Resiliency of Multi-Energy Systems written by Yumin Zhang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-09-18 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the inherent volatility and randomness, the increasing share of energy from renewable resources presents a challenge to the operation of multi-energy systems with heterogeneous energy carriers such as electricity, heat, hydrogen, etc. These factors will make the systems hard to adjust their supply and demand flexibly to maintain energy balance to ensure reliability. Further, this hinders the development of a low-carbon and economically viable energy system. By making full use of the synergistic interaction of generation, transmission, load demand, and energy storage, a three-fold approach focused on quantifying demand flexibility, evaluating supply capabilities, and enhancing resilience can unlock the flexibility potential across various sectors of new energy systems. This approach provides an effective means of facilitating the transition from conventional energy systems to low-carbon, clean-energy-oriented paradigms. However, huge challenges arising from renewable energy pose great obstacles to the aforementioned solution pathway. The main objectives of this Research Topic are: 1. Develop advanced carbon emission accounting and measurement techniques for emerging multi-energy systems 2. Design effective methods for predicting renewable electricity generation 3. Proposed efficient methods for quantitative assessment of uncertainty from renewables and loads 4. Put forward advanced evaluation, optimization, and planning strategies incorporating diverse flexibility resources 5. Design multifaceted market mechanisms and collaborative frameworks balancing economics and low carbon footprint 6. Develop operational control and resilience-enhancement techniques for distribution networks under large-scale distributed energy integration

Book Synopsis Planning and Operation Strategies for Enhancing Power System Flexibility in Low-Carbon Energy Transition by : Mingfei Ban
Download or read book Planning and Operation Strategies for Enhancing Power System Flexibility in Low-Carbon Energy Transition written by Mingfei Ban and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-02-21 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global energy system is undergoing a profound transformation from a system based mainly on fossil fuels to a low-carbon one based on variable renewable energy (VRE), such as wind power and solar power, to achieve the 2050 Paris Agreement. By 2050, solar and wind power, with more than 14,500 GW installed capacity, would account for three-fifths of global electricity generation. This transformation comes with significant challenges since high VRE shares will greatly increase system flexibility requirements for balancing supply and demand. Accordingly, all sectors of the power system need to unlock further requisite flexibility through technology, business, and policy innovations, including power supply, transmission, distribution, storage, and demand.
