Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was told I need to write a section for the book about the book. Well, Im out of words and too tired to think. Why cant I just draw pictures with stick figures? This isnt a novel; its an autobiography. Is not whats inside enough to emphasize in writing what this is all about? I cant explain everything because sometimes some things are just meant to be figured out. In a maximum of one hundred and fifty words, this section must be defined. Sorry to say Im going to keep going past that because I have thoughts of unrealistic but words so intelligently intricate. Anybody can plant a seed, but how healthy is your soil? Theres no telling what my words say because I can explain them in multiple different ways. Im not trying to confuse you. Can you just really understand what Im trying to say? They can go this way, but then again they can go that way. Dont ask me. I already know what Im trying to say. If you have questions, you might as well keep them to yourself. My answers are all right here, and its not my fault if you dont understand what Im trying to say. Maybe Im not trying to say anything but explain how my thoughts come to you. No producer, no director, just straight angles in ways Im trying to write to you. Good luck, because nobody knows what my words mean but me. How Im directing them, theres no control to the wind that can shift them into a direction that youll have no way to go but one way to go through. Im going to put so much into this; maybe I should just add an extra page. Im looking for a sound but dont hear a noise. Im sniffing for a breeze but dont feel any wind. I execute my steps, and maybe thats why I feel like I have nothing to walk on. The ground is planted, and Im on the ground. But somehow the air has taken me afloat to the clouds that can only bring me back down. Man makes concrete and lays it down. People walk over this concrete. I am the concrete. Thats how solid Ive become from the tramples to the stampedes. I dont care what you say from however to therefore, so with the cracks, you may seem to think it breaks me down. My weight limit exceeds multiple degrees in unlimited units of measure. I have two intros and an afterthought. What more do you need for an explanation for this book? Im designing my own pine box, but whatever you have for me, let God decide the rest on that. Be careful what youre reading though because I might not even be talking to you. If the assumption is the mother of all , then I must be mistaken. If Im your doubt, then I have nothing to worry about.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brilliant #1 New York Times bestseller Named a best book of 2020 by The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME, The Guardian, and many more With The Mirror & the Light, Hilary Mantel brings to a triumphant close the trilogy she began with her peerless, Booker Prize-winning novels, Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. She traces the final years of Thomas Cromwell, the boy from nowhere who climbs to the heights of power, offering a defining portrait of predator and prey, of a ferocious contest between present and past, between royal will and a common man’s vision: of a modern nation making itself through conflict, passion and courage. The story begins in May 1536: Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith’s son from Putney emerges from the spring’s bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour. Cromwell, a man with only his wits to rely on, has no great family to back him, no private army. Despite rebellion at home, traitors plotting abroad and the threat of invasion testing Henry’s regime to the breaking point, Cromwell’s robust imagination sees a new country in the mirror of the future. All of England lies at his feet, ripe for innovation and religious reform. But as fortune’s wheel turns, Cromwell’s enemies are gathering in the shadows. The inevitable question remains: how long can anyone survive under Henry’s cruel and capricious gaze? Eagerly awaited and eight years in the making, The Mirror & the Light completes Cromwell’s journey from self-made man to one of the most feared, influential figures of his time. Portrayed by Mantel with pathos and terrific energy, Cromwell is as complex as he is unforgettable: a politician and a fixer, a husband and a father, a man who both defied and defined his age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a strangely distorted Paris, a Japanese adoptee is haunted by the woman he once loved When Fumiko emerges after one month locked in her dorm room, she’s already dead, leaving a half-smoked Marlboro Light and a cupboard of petrified food in her wake. For her boyfriend, Henrik Blatand, an aspiring translator, these remnants are like clues, propelling him forward in a search for meaning. Meanwhile, Fumiko, or perhaps her doppelgänger, reappears: in line at the Louvre, on street corners and subway platforms, and on the dissection table of a group of medical students. Henrik’s inquiry expands beyond Fumiko’s seclusion and death, across the absurd, entropic streets of Paris and the figures that wander them, from a jaded group of Korean expats, to an eccentric French widow, to the indelible woman whom Henrik finds sitting in his place on a train. It drives him into the shadowy corners of his past, where his adoptive Danish parents raised him in a house without mirrors. And it mounts to a charged intimacy shared with his best friend’s precocious daughter, who may be haunted herself. David Hoon Kim’s debut is a transgressive, darkly comic novel of becoming lost and found in translation. With each successive, echoic chapter, Paris Is a Party, Paris Is a Ghost plunges us more deeply beneath the surface of things, to the displacement, exile, grief, and desire that hide in plain sight.

Book excerpt: After his flight to Calgary, Canada, suddenly ends in a fiery crash, fifty-eight-year-old Tony Parker is rescued by a stranger. Shaken, but with few injuries, Tony is shocked when he looks in the mirror and stares into the face of a teenager. But the biggest shock is yet to come when Tony is told he has died and is now living in an alternate world. Introducing himself as Max, the stranger announces that Tony is now residing in a secular afterlife rumoured to be built from memory where all the regulars still have a debt to pay. Populated by characters such as Marlene Dietrich, Mata Hari, Charles Ponzi, and Mozart, who often repeat blunders made during their lifetimes, the world is ruled by an integration council assembled to deal with problem migrants such as Tony. As Tony attempts to acclimate to his new home, he is paired with Sebastian Melmoth, also known as Oscar Wilde, who becomes his mentor assigned to guide him through adventurous mayhem barely held together by con artist Till Eulenspiegel. The Owls Mirror is the compelling tale of one mans whimsical journey through a strange and nonsensical afterlife.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Many days I believe menopause is the new (if long overdue) frontier for the most compelling and necessary philosophy; Darcey Steinke is already there, blazing the way. This elegant, wise, fascinating, deeply moving book is an instant classic. I’m about to buy it for everyone I know.” —Maggie Nelson, author of The Argonauts A brave, brilliant, and unprecedented examination of menopause Menopause hit Darcey Steinke hard. First came hot flashes. Then insomnia. Then depression. As she struggled to express what was happening to her, she came up against a culture of silence. Throughout history, the natural physical transition of menopause has been viewed as something to deny, fear, and eradicate. Menstruation signals fertility and life, and childbirth is revered as the ultimate expression of womanhood. Menopause is seen as a harbinger of death. Some books Steinke found promoted hormone replacement therapy. Others encouraged acceptance. But Steinke longed to understand menopause in a more complex, spiritual, and intellectually engaged way. In Flash Count Diary, Steinke writes frankly about aspects of Menopause that have rarely been written about before. She explores the changing gender landscape that comes with reduced hormone levels, and lays bare the transformation of female desire and the realities of prejudice against older women. Weaving together her personal story with philosophy, science, art, and literature, Steinke reveals that in the seventeenth century, women who had hot flashes in front of others could be accused of being witches; that the model for Duchamp's famous Étant donnés was a post-reproductive woman; and that killer whales—one of the only other species on earth to undergo menopause—live long post-reproductive lives. Flash Count Diary, with its deep research, open play of ideas, and reverence for the female body, will change the way you think about menopause. It's a deeply feminist book—honest about the intimations of mortality that menopause brings while also arguing for the ascendancy, beauty, and power of the post-reproductive years.

Book excerpt: Midlife is a journey, one filled with rough terrain, but it can be navigated with integrity and grace. Using the Tao Te Ching to explore the passage through midlife, Lisa G. Froman shares her flashes of wisdom to inspire women during this confusing and often tumultuous time. In Tao Flashes, she describes the duality of midlife, saying, Just as we become wiser, more pliable, more beautiful, just as we begin to have clarity, we also begin to notice the signs of aging, the wrinkles, the sagging skin. At menopause, we battle hot flashes and watch as our bodies reshape themselves into something we may no longer recognize. At the time when we are gaining power, we often feel we are losing our beauty. But the life lessons we wear on our faces are actually the subtle reminders of a rich and beautiful life executed with grace through times of pain and glory. At middle age, we experience another paradox as we become freer, looser, yet somehow more serious about our lives, our purpose, our commitment to things and people outside of ourselves. And as we discover what gives us depth and dimension, we can begin to embrace the light and the dark sides of our nature. Thats when things get interesting.
