This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 10, 1948, an FJ-1 Fury fighter landed aboard the carrier Boxer. The U.S. Navy had officially entered the jet age. Built by North American, the Fury shared a prototype with the Air Force¿s F-86 Sabre. When the FJ-1¿s straight wing design proved less than satisfactory, North American provided the Navy with enhanced F-86Es. Designated the FJ-2, the plane flew primarily with the U.S. Marine Corps. An enhanced version, the FJ-3, debuted in 1953 and was deployed in late 1954. The plane served in a variety of duties, including as control aircraft for the Navy¿s Regulus nuclear cruise missile. The Fury remained with the fleet into the early 1960¿s. Over 1,100 were produced. This pilot¿s flight operating handbook was originally produced by the U.S. Navy. It has been slightly reformatted but is reproduced here in its entirety.

Book Synopsis The Last of NASA's Original Pilot Astronauts by : David J. Shayler
Download or read book The Last of NASA's Original Pilot Astronauts written by David J. Shayler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-19 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resulting from the authors’ deep research into these two pre-Shuttle astronaut groups, many intriguing and untold stories behind the selection process are revealed in the book. The often extraordinary backgrounds and personal ambitions of these skilled pilots, chosen to continue NASA’s exploration and knowledge of the space frontier, are also examined. In April 1966 NASA selected 19 pilot astronauts whose training was specifically targeted to the Apollo lunar landing missions and the Earth-orbiting Skylab space station. Three years later, following the sudden cancellation of the USAF’s highly classified Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) project, seven military astronauts were also co-opted into NASA’s space program. This book represents the final chapter by the authors in the story of American astronaut selections prior to the era of the Space Shuttle. Through personal interviews and original NASA documentation, readers will also gain a true insight into a remarkable age of space travel as it unfolded in the late 1960s, and the men who flew those historic missions.

Download or read book At the Helm of USS America written by James E. Wise, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only the best officers are given command of U.S. Navy ships, and only the elite of these are selected for aircraft carriers. The USS America was the third of four Kitty Hawk-class super-carriers. Commissioned in 1965, decommissioned in 1996, she served three times in Vietnam, and once each in Libya, the Persian Gulf and Bosnia. This book profiles the 23 men who commanded the America and her crew of 5,000 during 31 years. Most of them were combat veterans--World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Mayaguez Rescue Operations, Lebanon, Haiti, Libya, Bosnia, and Desert Storm. Four were Naval Academy graduates; seven were test pilots; one became Inspector General of the Navy; one wore both Navy wings and submariner dolphins; and one was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for nearly six years. Two retired as admirals--one was Chief of Naval Operations--five as vice admirals, and 11 as rear admirals. Each profile gives a career account based on official biographies, published memoirs, and interviews with the commanders or their families.

Book Synopsis Aircraft Carriers by : Norman Polmar
Download or read book Aircraft Carriers written by Norman Polmar and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-01-31 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the post-1945 era, the aircraft carrier has remained a valued weapon despite the development of nuclear weapons, cruise and ballistic missiles, and highly capable submarines. At times, as in the early days of the Korean and Vietnam Wars and in the Falklands conflict, carriers alone could deploy high-performance aircraft to the battlefield. In other operations, such as enforcing the no-fly zones and the U.S. invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, only carriers could provide the bases needed for sustained combat and support operations. This second volume of Norman Polmar's landmark study details the role of carriers in the unification of the U.S. armed forces and strategic deterrence, fiscally constrained Great Britain, the development of British Commonwealth and ex-colonial navies, and the efforts of France and the Netherlands to rebuild their fleets. The role of the modern carrier-nine nations currently possess them-is discussed, as are the issues confronting nations that might acquire them. Chapters on the Soviet Union's effort to produce carriers are included for the first time. The development of both carrier planes and the many "oddball" aircraft that have flown from carriers-such as the U-2 spy plane-are also examined. Appendixes include comprehensive data on all carriers built and converted through 2006. This volume is a valuable companion to the critically acclaimed Volume I, which covers aircraft carrier development and operations from 1909 to 1945.
