Book excerpt: The story starts in a charity hospice in Rochester-a place that Dickens himself was familiar with from his own childhood. According to the will of the founder, Richard Watts, at Christmas the hospice must provide lodgings and entertainment for one night as well as some money to six poor people, an amount that is substantial enough to allow the travelers to buy a hearty meal. On Christmas Eve there are six people in the inn and the novels is composed from the six stories of the travelers who find shelter in the hospice, plus the narrator himself. The stories told by the travelers and the meal shared create a kind of harmony and a sense of community between the seven people-they all leave the inn the following day and life will probably take them to different places, but they will all cherish the memory of this one serene evening.

I call it this town, because if anybody present knows to a nicety where Rochester ends and Chatham begins, it is more than I do. He was a poor traveller, with not a farthing in his pocket. He sat by the fire in this very room, and he slept one night in a bed that will be occupied tonight by some one here.My relative came down to Chatham to enlist in a cavalry regiment, if a cavalry regiment would have him; if not, to take King George's shilling from any corporal or sergeant who would put a bunch of ribbons in his hat. His object was to get shot; but he thought he might as well ride to death as be at the trouble of walking. My relative's Christian name was Richard, but he was better known as Dick. He dropped his own surname on the road down, and took up that of Doubledick. He was passed as Richard Doubledick; age, twenty-two; height, five foot ten; native place, Exmouth, which he had never been near in his life. There was no cavalry in Chatham when he limped over the bridge here with half a shoe to his dusty feet, so he enlisted into a regiment of the line, and was glad to get drunk and forget all about it.

Book excerpt: Dickens wrote the whole of 'The Road,' but in 1867, when he decided to separate his contribution to The Seven Poor Travellers from the rest of the Christmas number and reprint his share in an edition of his Christmas stories, he left out or rewrote those passages which referred to segments not by him. Editions of the Collected Works have re-printed these writings (usually under the title Christmas Stories) in their 1867 form.

Book excerpt: Strictly speaking, there were only six Poor Travellers; but, being a Traveller myself, though an idle one, and being withal as poor as I hope to be, I brought the number upto seven. This word of explanation is due at once, for what says the inscription overthe quaint old door?RICHARD WATTS, Esq.by his Will, dated 22 Aug. 1579, founded this Charityfor Six poor Travellers, who not being ROGUES, or PROCTORS, May receive gratis for one Night, Lodging, Entertainment, and Fourpence each.It was in the ancient little city of Rochester in Kent, of all the good days in the yearupon a Christmas-eve, that I stood reading this inscription over the quaint old door inquestion. I had been wandering about the neighbouring Cathedral, and had seen thetomb of Richard Watts, with the effigy of worthy Master Richard starting out of it likea ship's figure-head; and I had felt that I could do no less, as I gave the Verger his fee, than inquire the way to Watts's Charity. The way being very short and very plain, Ihad come prosperously to the inscription and the quaint old door."Now," said I to myself, as I looked at the knocker, "I know I am not a Proctor; Iwonder whether I am a Rogue!"Upon the whole, though Conscience reproduced two or three pretty faces whichmight have had smaller attraction for a moral Goliath than they had had for me, whoam but a Tom Thumb in that way, I came to the conclusion that I was not aRogue. So, beginning to regard the establishment as in some sort my property, bequeathed to me and divers co-legatees, share and share alike, by the WorshipfulMaster Richard Watts, I stepped backward into the road to survey my inhe
