Aristóteles sostiene que el alma es la forma o esencia de cualquier cosa viviente, no una sustancia distinta del cuerpo en el que está, y establece los tipos de almas que poseen los seres vivos, que se diferencian por sus operaciones, de tal manera que, por ejemplo, las plantas, que tienen la capacidad de alimentarse y reproducirse, poseerían el mínimo de lo que debe tener cualquier organismo. Los animales inferiores, por su parte, dispondrían, además, de percepción sensorial y movimiento propio (acción), y los seres humanos tendrían todas estas cualidades más el intelecto. Es la posesión de un alma (de un tipo específico), según el filósofo griego, lo que hace que un organismo sea un organismo, y por lo tanto la noción de un cuerpo sin alma, o de un alma en el tipo equivocado de cuerpo, es ininteligible.
