Book excerpt: Fisheries play an important role in the economy of nations bordering the sea and this is especially true in a populous country like India where a large majority continues to live below the poverty line. Sea fishing has been an occupation with the coastal people of India since time immemorial forming an integral part of the maritime heritage. Machanisation has been introduced into the marine fishing with a view to exploit the fisheries potential all along the Indian coastline of 6,500 km by overcoming the deficiencies of the centuries old traditional fishing technology and to augment fish production with a higher fishing effort and also to raise the income levels and living standards of fishermen. The present book, based on the author’s doctoral dissertation, made a bold and pioneering attempt to evaluate the costs and earnings of mechanised and traditional boats for determining their relative operational efficiency and to examine intensively the effects of mechanisation on employment, income levels, consumption pattern and levels of living of fishermen and their social implications. While analysing the merits of the new fishing technology and also the reactions of different groups of fishermen to mechanisation, he spotlights the shortsightedness in the implementation of the programme of mechanisation resulting in a host of negative effects which have implications and also sets forth the valuable lessons which Indian experiences have to offer to the densely populated littoral nations in the Third World. To ensure enduring benefits to the vast majority of marine fishermen, the thesis underscores, among numerous other remedies the need for the provision of an intermediary technology, the need for the institutional support and marketing network and the need for the management of fisheries resources. It also calls for the policies to bring about socio-economic development of the fishing community on par with the rest of the society. All in all, a genuine contribution to knowledge of `grassroots' situations that will have enduring value and that can be useful in both academic and policy-formation circles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book as a prelude to ``NEW SCHOOL OF ECONOMIC THOUGHT'' provides Five Select Essays in a historical dimension on the theme, Challenges in Development that largely by-passed the serious attention of scholars on reasons unaccounted. The dominant paradigms of development have undergone drastic shifts in the recent past. The western or capitalistic model of development, has lost much of its pretence and failed to prove valid in the Third World context. The so called Socialist manifesto also failed as self-fulfilling prophesy, more so with the end of Communist power blocks and increasing disarray and communal conflicts in South-East Asia and particularly the disintegration process that is off-spin in India. These challenges are now emerging into the centre stage of ``Economic Management'' with `Human-Centred Development' as the new logic of market mechanism eclipsing the role of Keynesian paradigm in the emerging global economic order adopting holistic view on development-TELEONOMICS. This book would provide thoughts for further research for those serious scholars who are obsessed with modern economic system management and analysis. Review ``The author has studied the phenomenon of underdevelopment in the Indian context and attributed it to lop-sided development. He does not subscribe to the view that over population is responsible for poverty. The author's contention is that the development strategy India has been following under various plans is elitist-oriented. The author laments: the plan preaches socialism and politics practices capitalism. .... the author argues, even the technical change that has taken place, is not helpful in solving problems of poverty and unemployment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is a new and original venture to make an interpretation of the phenomenon of under-development in India. Such an endeavour had not been undertaken by social scientists in the past, and this work is a path-breaking effort by this author. The nature and causes of underdevelopment and backwardness in India, which came under British domination, in spite of the historic background of this country with ancient glory and spiritual history, had been subjected to scientific investigation in this research work. The theoretical contributions of Francois Perroux (1903-1987), the French economist of world reputation, is a special characteristic of this research work. The British domination and the establishment of the British empire had been interpreted by the utilisation of the ideas of Francois Perroux. This is a very special feature of this research work. The author had worked in close collaboration with this economist in Paris for several years. The features of Hinduism in India in relation to the precipitation of under-development is also a special feature of this research work. Political economy as a theme of research endeavour had not taken shape in India at the present epoch. Hence, this endeavour has such a major claim also for this special feature in finding out the causes of backwardness of this ancient country. The features of colonialism which was established in this land are traced in depth while the religious features are given due importance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of public enterprises is not new. They have been assigned the role of harbinger of socialism in India in accordance with the Industrial Policy Resolution of 1956. They are treated as the catalysts of economic development and social upliftment of the people. For pretty a long time, public enterprises have been in dock and dottage on the ground that they have not been able to deliver goods as per our expectations. With a huge amount of investment in the central sector and the states' sector taken together, these enterprises have failed to generate a dependable surplus. Public sector is an amalgam of Central and State enterprises. In this book we have established that the state's enterprises' commitments are no less than central enterprises to fulfil the objectives and expectations with which, they were allotted the commanding height in our economy. A macro-level study of all types of State-level public undertakings has been done to judge the efficiency and effectiveness of these enterprises. This book is unique in the sense that it covers the syllabus of M.A., B.A. (Hons.) and B.A. (Pass) courses of all the universities of Bihar and special paper as `Public Enterprises' in other universities of India. In view of its multi-dimensional approach, the book would be of immense importance to general readers, students, academicians and researchers. Review ``The book deals with the economics of public enterprises with special reference to Bihar. The book is of special importance, particularly in the present context of redefining the role of public sector''. I Satya Sundaram, Southern Economist

We have examined in this study the structural changes and growth performance of the Indian Economy and contrasted it with the happenings across a set of countries at different levels of development. The Indian Economy is first examined in isolation and then an inter-country analysis is carried out where some of the features depicted by the Indian Economy are further tested. The structural changes in the Indian Economy are examined on the basis of twenty two structural variables as were identified by Syrquin and Chenesy (1989). We also examine Economy and also for a set of countries at different levels of development.
