Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fish Stocking as Related to the Management of Inland Waters The uses to which these fishing waters may be subjected will in the same way be varied and may include such objectives as the production of fishes for food; or they may have the control of erosion as the pri mary, and the fish crop as an additional aim; or they may have purely recreational objectives, with health and aesthetic values paramount. The amount of fish produced may thus be a secondary consideration in some cases and a primary one in others. Book excerpt: The major objective of the book was to promote better understanding of how various factors must fit together for successful implementation of inland fisheries enhancement programmes. Accordingly, the papers span a broad range of topics: technical, socio-economic, cultural and administrative. Techniques, geographic constraints, problems of information gathering and monitoring, and genetics are addressed. Because of its relative importance as an enhancement technique, stocking received much attention; areas discussed include strategies, modelling and prediction of results, health management and fitness of stocked fish as well as stocking experiences by type of water body. Cage culture: its importance, promotion through extension and limitations is also considered. Other paper cover social and economic benefits and their distribution, institutions and self and participatory management. Country reviews dealing very broadly with enhancements are also included. Book excerpt: The current high demand for fish and increased awareness of the role of the environment in supporting human well being has led to a situation where attitudes to inland water resources are changing rapidly. Trends in resource use and environmental impact are very evident in inland waters which are particularly vulnerable as they act as collectors of all the activities occurring in their basins and rank as some of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. The principle changes influencing the evolution of the aquatic resource for fisheries are described in this book, which has been compiled for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Book excerpt: Inland fisheries are important sources of ecosystem services contributing to human diet, health, well-being and economies. The evaluation of the importance and value of inland fisheries is one of the biggest challenges for its development. To develop the inland fisheries data collection, we reviewed the current status of data collection in European countries and provided five detailed country examples. The specific country examples give detailed description of data collection, focusing on: 1) country-wide postal survey (Finland) and 2) web-based survey and development of citizen science approach (Denmark). Example 3) from Ireland focuses on recreational salmonid fishing and conservation limits. There are two examples based on logbook returns: 4) one strict system, which is considered to work well (Czech Republic) and 5) one less controlled system, currently not producing reliable results, and under development (Croatia). Case studies were provided in each country example. Finally, the authors discuss the important aspects of inland fisheries data collection and review the methods to provide recommendations.
