Download or read book Tales of Vice and Virtue written by Adrian P. Tudor and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is presented for the first time an extraordinary medieval text, the first Old French Vie des Pères. The Vie des Pères is in fact a collective text comprising three branches and, at its fullest, over seventy individually enclosed pious tales / miracles. The first Vie – the first forty-one or -two tales – dates from the first third of the thirteenth century. It is a vitally significant but hitherto neglected part of the Old French canon. Indeed, in his preface to this volume Michel Zink, one of the most respected medievalists of his generation, notes that the qualities of the Vie des Pèrs ‘devraient valoir à son auteur une place au voisinage de celle qu’occupent pour nous celui de la Chanson de Roland ou Chrétien de Troyes.’ The tales are remarkably well written and offer fascinating glimpses of thirteenth-century life and spirituality. They were also extremely popular in Medieval France. Sharing close links with a number of traditions – fabliaux, Saints’ Lives, Miracles of the Virgin, Romance, Sermons – the Vie des Pères has value for those interested in many branches of vernacular literature, codicology, lexicography, art history, theology and philology. Tales of Vice and Virtue – the first sustained analysis of the entire first Vie des Pères to be published – is a groundbreaking book providing readers new to the text with detailed commentaries, offering abundant intertextual information for romance philologists, and suggesting many new areas for further research.

Book excerpt: In the aftermath of having survived an encounter with pedophile serial killer Uriah Beek almost three years earlier, two still healing couples reconnect at Christmas time in the small Oregon coast city of Cutter Point. Kevin Kearnes, the city's former police chief, now a special agent with Homeland Security, is returning to Cutter Point with Britt McGraw and his two young sons to marry Britt on the same beach where he first kissed her. Thud Compton, Kearnes' old sergeant, and now Cutter Point's new chief, has invited them to stay at the Compton home. However, the Kearnes' are not the only ones traveling to Cutter Point for the holidays. Some very bad men are coming to town and instead of bearing gifts, they are planning on taking one for themselves; an old military sword from WWII rusting away inside its display case in the local library which, after 9/11, is now worth a million dollars on the world black market for war artifacts. Russian mobsters "Little Nikki" Kravchenko and Vlasi Voronov will happily accept half that much in payment from Phillip Peeters, the man who has hired them to steal it. But to college student Darius Ono, who has already failed at one attempt to take it, the sword is priceless and reclaiming it will restore honor to the name of his dead great uncle "The Emperor's Sparrow." Although they don't yet know it, Kevin Kearnes and Thud Compton are about to face their greatest threat ever when they are forced to pursue the murderous men who have stolen The Sparrow's Blade.

Bishop’s new and aggressive persona sends the kingdom into turmoil and reignites war between the sects. The young Prince Farren finds himself caught between the love for his brother, and war. Farren is quickly forced out of his rambunctious, adolescent ways and struggles to gain strength to save his friends. The danger is far greater than everyone realizes, and it will take help from some very unexpected sources for Farren and Commander Coal Lucer to avert war, and worse; the coming of a new and dark age. Just as it was beginning to be thought of as legend, magic starts to flow once again in the land of Paks.

This book was released on 2015-11-04 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by two of the professionís most prominent midwifery leaders, this authoritative history of midwifery in the United States, from the 1600s to the present, is distinguished by its vast breadth and depth. The book spans the historical evolution of midwives as respected, autonomous health care workers and midwifery as a profession, and considers the strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities for this discipline as enduring motifs throughout the text. It surveys the roots of midwifery, the beginnings of professional practice, the founding of educational institutions and professional organizations, and entry pathways into the profession. Woven throughout the text are such themes as the close link between midwives and the communities in which they live, their view of pregnancy and birth as normal life events, their efforts to promote health and prevent illness, and their dedication to being with women wherever they may be and in whatever health condition and circumstances they may be in. The text examines the threats to midwifery past and present, such as the increasing medicalization of childbearing care, midwiferyís lack of a common identity based on education and practice standards, the mix of legal recognition, and reimbursement issues for midwifery practice. Illustrations and historical photos depict the many facets of midwifery, and engaging stories provide cultural and spiritual content. This is a ìmust-haveî for all midwives, historians, professional and educational institutions, and all those who share a passion for the history of midwifery and women.
