Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Georgia HistoryThe author has tried to present in this book the leading facts of the history of Georgia, and he has spared neither time nor trouble in endeavoring to obtain them. Leading facts in the history of the United States are interwoven in the narrative wherever the closeness of their relation to Georgia history makes it necessary or desirable. The book is written for pupils from twelve to fifteen years of age. Though not descending to childish narrative, the author has endeavored to make the story easily understood. But it cannot be mastered without study, for without study nothing really valuable in education can ever be acquired. The narrative that is merely pleasing is not always the most serviceable or the most likely to be retained in the memory.Great care has been taken and great expense incurred in the pictorial illustrations of the book. Pictures of many Georgia men are given for the first time in a history, special attention having been paid to the work of securing good likenesses of those who as generals led Georgians brigades in the Civil War. The faces of these commanders in the great- struggle are thus presented to the youth of the State, who, will look upon them with gratification and pride. To teachers, the author desires to suggest that the book be used as a reader in the seventh and eighth grades and in the high schools. After a chapter has been read, the questions at the end may be of help in the work of review, while the 0 "Topics" may be found serviceable as supplying subjects for written exercises. By using the text at the rate of two chapters a week, the book can be mastered in a year.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The manuscript was read and criticised by a number of public school and normal school teachers of the state, and I am led to hope from their opinions that a text constructed along the above lines will prove acceptable to teachers and pupils. Where the book is used for very young people, I suggest the omission of Chapters V, XI, XIV, XIX, XXV. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of Georgia: Georgia as a Colony and a State, 1733-1893 IN comparison with most of the states which composed the original thirteen, Georgia has not a great deal of history, being the youngest tree that was planted by more than half a century. But that history is very interesting and should be made familiar to the young pe0p1e, whether they be children of the state by nativity or adoption. This little book is not intended to embrace all of that history in its many details, but is merely an abridgment compiled from larger and more comprehensive works. It begins with Oglethorpe, the founder of the colony, and comes down through many changes, many disasters and successes to the present hopeful and prosperous condition. To this compilation have been added a few chapters con cerning slavery, its origin, continuance and abolition. Also concerning the causes that provoked the late unhappy war and the results that followed in its wake. These historic readings contain the facts of the case - facts that have been established but have not heretofore been published in any book of history. The author regards these readings as especially important to the young people whose fathers and grandfathers fought in that war - fought for something they believed to be right. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Georgia In preparing the pages that follow, the writer has had in view the desirability of familiarizing the youth of Georgia with the salient facts of the State's history in a way that shall make the further study of that history a delight instead of a task. The ground has been gone over before by various writers, but the narratives that are here retold, and the characterizations that are here attempted, have not been brought together heretofore. They lie wide apart in volumes that are little known and out of print. The stories and the characterizations have been grouped together so as to form a series of connecting links in the rise and progress of Georgia; yet it must not be forgotten that these links are themselves connected with facts and events in the State's development that are quite as interesting, and of as far-reaching importance, as those that have been narrated here. Some such suggestion as this, it is hoped, will cross the minds of young students, and lead them to investigate for themselves the interesting intervals that lie between. It is unfortunately true that there is no history of Georgia in which the dry bones of facts have been clothed with the flesh and blood of popular narrative. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Georgia, Vol. 1 of 2: From Its First Discovery by Europeans to the Adoption of the Present Constitution in 1798 Entering a field of enquiry which has been reaped by four predecessors, I could scarcely expect to do more than glean here and there a sheaf which the sickle had spared, or the reaper neglected. My success in collecting materials has more than equalled my most sanguine expectations, and enabled me to present a fuller and more authentic work than could have been written at any former time. By virtue of a resolution of the Georgia Legislature, passed December 23d, 1837, the Governor appointed the Rev. Charles Wallace Howard an agent of the State, to repair to London, for the purpose of procuring the colonial records, or copies thereof, now in the Colonial Departments of Great Britain, that relate to the history and settlement of this State. By the further liberality of the same body, the papers which were the result of his mission, were placed in my library, for the purpose of preparing this history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Georgia History Stories In this book the author has undertaken to relate what seemed to him to be the most interesting events in the history of Georgia, from the planting of the colony in 1733 to the years immediately preceding the War of Secession. The narrative, as a rule, is adapted to children from twelve to fifteen years of age; however, the author believes that it will be interesting reading for grown people, and for youths of some maturity. In several instances the author has found that the subjects treated could not be well presented in the form of children's stories. Such is especially the case with nearly all that is contained in Part III, the Development Period. In preparing this volume the author has read and studied with the utmost care a great many books bearing on Georgia's history. He has also done much original investigation. His aim above all things has been to make his work authentic and reliable. While he has tried to write in an attractive style, he has refrained from trifling with his subject - a fault too common with many writers of the so-called history stories of the day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Georgia for Georgia Boys and Girls If we travel all over this great state of ours, we shall see cities, towns, villages, and cultivated farm lands. The rivers and streams turn the wheels of busy mills, and there are signs of life everywhere. But it was not always like this. Years ago, before white people settled in this country, and even long after, dense forests covered the mountains, hillsides, and valleys, and the level lands in the south. Numerous tribes of Indians lived under the tall trees and on the banks of the streams. The most powerful of these tribes were the Cherokees, who occupied the northern part of the state among the mountains, and the Creeks, who lived farther to the south. They were a tall, straight, and strong people, generous and good-natured. They were brave in battle, kind to strangers, and never forgetful of a favor, though very resentful when injured. They loved their people and their homes, and were especially kind to the aged. It was their belief that a person gained more wisdom the longer he lived, and they greatly reverenced a wise man. One of the first lessons which the little Indian boy learned was that of respect for old age. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Standard History of Georgia and Georgians, Vol. 5 Marshall Wellborn Dunn was educated in country schools, which he attended until reaching the age of sixteen, at which time he left school In order to assist his father in the management of the plantation, of which he later took entire charge, residing on it until 1909. He then organized a partner ship with W. T. Parish, under the style of Dunn Parish, and founded a general mercantile and supply house, which is now one of the leading busi ness concerns in Thomson, the enterprise having been successful. Mr. Dunn has long taken a strong interest in educational matters, and his fellow citizens, knowing him to be a good man to entrust with school matters, in 1899 elected him a member of the board of education. After serving efficiently for several years, in 1904 he was elected as county school superintendent, which position he still retains. He took a leading part in the erection of the fine new high school, completed in 1911, and which cost $20, 000. In putting through this project to its final consummation, he had to work hard to overcome the strong opposition against it on the part of many citizens who objected to the city's incurring so great an expense, but persuasion and argument finally prevailed, and it would now be hard to find anyone who does not take a pride in this magnificent and commodious building, or who would wish to go back to the old condition of things.
