Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Mathematics, Being an Easy and Practical Introduction to the Study: For Self-Instruction and Use in Schools This little work, so far as I know, is new in its object and plan. Its design is, to place a body of interesting, practical, and useful mathematical knowledge within reach of that large class in middle and elementary schools, who have not time for Euclid or any such course. The pupil can work at it mostly by himself, with occasional superintendence by the teacher; or it may be used as a lesson book in classes. He will learn from it the nature of geometrical figures; how to do the leading problems in practical geometry; how to construct the leading kinds of plane figures; to read and understand algebraic expressions, including the simpler equations; and to solve the principal questions in mensuration, in which numerous practical exercises are given. He will thus become initiated in mathematical language and ideas; be subjected to a valuable mental exercise; acquire a body of useful knowledge, thorough so far as it goes; and lay such a foundation as will make it easy for him to take up the subject afterwards, should taste or professional requirements lead him to recur to it. Book Synopsis Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K-12 by : Peter Liljedahl

This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thinking student is an engaged student Teachers often find it difficult to implement lessons that help students go beyond rote memorization and repetitive calculations. In fact, institutional norms and habits that permeate all classrooms can actually be enabling "non-thinking" student behavior. Sparked by observing teachers struggle to implement rich mathematics tasks to engage students in deep thinking, Peter Liljedahl has translated his 15 years of research into this practical guide on how to move toward a thinking classroom. Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K–12 helps teachers implement 14 optimal practices for thinking that create an ideal setting for deep mathematics learning to occur. This guide Provides the what, why, and how of each practice and answers teachers’ most frequently asked questions Includes firsthand accounts of how these practices foster thinking through teacher and student interviews and student work samples Offers a plethora of macro moves, micro moves, and rich tasks to get started Organizes the 14 practices into four toolkits that can be implemented in order and built on throughout the year When combined, these unique research-based practices create the optimal conditions for learner-centered, student-owned deep mathematical thinking and learning, and have the power to transform mathematics classrooms like never before.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Mathematical Modeling by : Edward A. Bender
Download or read book An Introduction to Mathematical Modeling written by Edward A. Bender and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing a practical, "learn by doing" approach, this first-rate text fosters the development of the skills beyond the pure mathematics needed to set up and manipulate mathematical models. The author draws on a diversity of fields — including science, engineering, and operations research — to provide over 100 reality-based examples. Students learn from the examples by applying mathematical methods to formulate, analyze, and criticize models. Extensive documentation, consisting of over 150 references, supplements the models, encouraging further research on models of particular interest. The lively and accessible text requires only minimal scientific background. Designed for senior college or beginning graduate-level students, it assumes only elementary calculus and basic probability theory for the first part, and ordinary differential equations and continuous probability for the second section. All problems require students to study and create models, encouraging their active participation rather than a mechanical approach. Beyond the classroom, this volume will prove interesting and rewarding to anyone concerned with the development of mathematical models or the application of modeling to problem solving in a wide array of applications.
