Congress having prescribed the mode of publishing the results of the survey, it is intended to confine these pages to a simple statement of the bureau organization, progress of field investigation, and results already attained. The law creating the office of Director of the Geological Survey was enacted and approved March On March the President nominated me first Director of the Geological Survey, the Senate con firmed his action on April 3, 1879, and on May 24 I took the prescribed oath of office, and entered on my duties.
