Book excerpt: Mystery crime fiction written in the Golden Age of Murder "Readers will enjoy watching the conflicts that arise between the wary country folk and the cocktail-drinking Londoners invading their habitat. In sum, this is jolly good fun." —Publishers Weekly The Second World War is drawing to a close. Nicholas Vaughan, released from the army after an accident, takes refuge in Devon—renting a thatched cottage in the beautiful countryside at Mallory Fitzjohn. Vaughan sets to work farming the land, rearing geese and renovating the cottage. Hard work and rural peace seem to make this a happy bachelor life. On a nearby farm lives the bored, flirtatious June St Cyres, an exile from London while her husband is a Japanese POW. June's presence attracts fashionable visitors of dubious character, and threatens to spoil Vaughan's prized seclusion. When Little Thatch is destroyed in a blaze, all Vaughan's work goes up in smoke—and Inspector Macdonald is drafted in to uncover a motive for murder.

Book excerpt: One of the very few known facts about the life of Edith Caroline Rivett is that she was evacuated from London to South Devon during the war. Among London and North Lancashire this region provides the setting for several of her novels. As seen in Fire in the Thatch she apparently knows about its landscape and agriculture, its vernacular architecture and its people. Haycraft, Howard in Murder for Pleasure suggests a formula for the detective genre "50% good detection, 25% character, 25% what you know best". Mrs. Rivett, writing as E. C. R Lorac, certainly fulfils the last 25%. The setting in time is excellent, too. It’s about 1944 and references to the war abound. Rationing of petrol is even an integral part of the story.
Book Synopsis Firefighting the Blitz by : Aylmer Firebrace CBE KPM
Download or read book Firefighting the Blitz written by Aylmer Firebrace CBE KPM and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2021-12-31 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War was coming. Everyone knew that confrontation with Nazi Germany was inevitable and that London was likely to be a prime target of Hitler’s bombers. So, in January 1939, Aylmer Firebrace, the Chief Officer of London Fire Brigade, was seconded to the Home Office to plan for the capital’s fire defence. Before joining the Fire Brigade, Aylmer Firebrace had been a Royal Navy officer who had fought in the Battle of Jutland during the First World War. It was following the Armistice that, in 1919, he became principal officer in the London Fire Brigade. He was promoted to deputy chief and finally chief officer in June 1938.. That war struck London soon enough, but it was on 7 September 1940, that Firebrace’s preparations were truly tested with the start of the Blitz. For the next fifty-seven days and nights London was subjected to the longest continuous bombing campaign in history. Then, as the Luftwaffe ranged wider and further across Britain’s towns and cities, Firebrace was tasked with toured the nation to see the effects of the bombing, at which point he saw the need for a national response. The result was the creation of the National Fire Service. Formed in August 1941, by the amalgamation of some 1,600 separate brigades, this remarkable organisation had, at its peak, a strength of 370,000 men and women. It was led for its entire existence by Aylmer Firebrace. As the war continued, Firebrace became Chief of the Fire Staff and Inspector-in-Chief of the Fires Services, being the first and, to date, only person to head all the fire-fighting services in Britain. This body had to deal with the expansion of the Blitz as well as the so-called ‘Baedeker’ raids, the ‘tip-and-run’ attacks, Baby Blitz and V1 and V2 offensives of the later years of the war. In his fascinating account, written immediately the war, Firebrace reflects on the functioning of the fire service at its most testing time. This book is an essential addition to the understanding of the Blitz and how London and the rest of the country survived its darkest hour.

Originally published between 1909 and 1917 under the name "Harvard Classics," this stupendous 51-volume set-a collection of the greatest writings from literature, philosophy, history, and mythology-was assembled by American academic CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT (1834-1926), Harvard University's longest-serving president. Volume XLV is the second of two volumes to feature sacred writings from around the globe, those not merely essential to believers but enjoyed by secular readers as great works of literature. Included here: [ from Christian tradition, the New Testament books Corinthians I and II, plus a selection of hymns ancient and modern [ Buddhist writings that elucidate the life and teachings of the beloved 5th century BC prophet Siddhartha Gautama, aka the Buddha [ the Bhagavad-Gita, the "Song Celestial," one of the gems of Hindu philosophy [ selections from the Koran, touching on the most important of Mohammed's revelations
