Book excerpt: "Fascinating...A richly detailed portrait." -Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times Known in his day as the King of Sugar, Julio Lobo was the wealthiest man in prerevolutionary Cuba. He had a life fit for Hollywood: he barely survived both a gangland shooting and a firing squad, and courted movie stars such as Joan Fontaine and Bette Davis. Only when he declined Che Guevara's personal offer to become Minister of Sugar in the Communist regime did Lobo's decades-long reign in Cuba come to a dramatic end. Drawing on stories from the author's own family history and other tales of the island's lost haute bourgeoisie, The Sugar King of Havana is a rare portrait of Cuba's glittering past—and a hopeful window into its future.

Book Synopsis Dancing with the Dinosaur by : William Lareau
Download or read book Dancing with the Dinosaur written by William Lareau and published by Academic Learning Company LLC. This book was released on 1994 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to present you with a new perspective about work and business -- new behaviors, new expectations, new theories. In order to do this, it is necessary to disrupt and challenge the strongly ingrained but outmoded and ridiculous assumptions that you've been taught about business by well-meaning parents, teachers, and by society. An important element of this book's strategy for challenging the old and teaching the new is to create and place you in a make-believe business jungle, replete with dinosaurs. This jungle and its dinosaurs are metaphors for the normal business world and the people who work in it. In order to strengthen the impact, all the dinosaurs are given special names. At first these names will seem strange and difficult to pronounce. Very quickly though, the names will become familiar and even endearing as you begin to internalize the concepts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many broad studies of the Vietnam War, but this work offers an insight into the harrowing experiences of just a small number of men from a single unit, deep in the jungles of Vietnam and Cambodia. Its focus is the remarkable account of a Medal of Honor recipient Leslie Sabo Jr., whose brave actions were forgotten for over three decades. Sabo and other replacement soldiers in Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 506th Infantry (Currahees), 101st Airborne Division, were involved in intense, bloody engagements such as the battle for Hill 474 and the Mother's Day Ambush. Beginning with their deployment at the height of the blistering Tet Offensive, and using military records and interviews with surviving soldiers, Eric Poole recreates the terror of combat amidst the jungles and rice paddies of Vietnam. Company of Heroes, now published in paperback tells the remarkable story of how Sabo earned his medal, as Bravo Company forged bonds of brotherhood in their daily battle for survival.

Book Synopsis Determining the Shakespeare Canon by : MacDonald Pairman Jackson
Download or read book Determining the Shakespeare Canon written by MacDonald Pairman Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editors of Shakespeare's Complete Works must decide what to include. Although not in the First Folio collection of 1623, The Two Noble Kinsmen and Edward III have now entered the canon as plays co-authored by Shakespeare. Determining the Shakespeare Canon makes the case for lifting Arden of Faversham, first published in 1592, over the same threshold. A wealth of evidence indicates that Shakespeare was wholly or largely responsible for several of its central scenes (constituting Act III in editions divided into acts), and that the domestic tragedy can thus be added to the mounting list of his dramatic collaborations. Shakespeare's beginnings as a playwright are due for reconsideration. The second half of this volume provides solid grounds for accepting that publisher Thomas Thorpe's inclusion of A Lover's Complaint within the 1609 quarto of Shakespeare Sonnets was justified. While A Lover's Complaint has long been part of the Shakespeare canon, according to most editors, the poem's authenticity has been vigorously challenged in recent years. Its status is crucial to how critics assess the authority of the quarto's ordering of sonnets and interpret the structure of the sequence as a whole. These two problems of attribution are each addressed in five separate chapters that describe the converging results of different approaches and rebut counter-arguments. Stylometric techniques, using the resources of computers and electronic databases, are applied and the research methodologies of other scholars explained and evaluated. Quantitative tests are supplemented with traditional literary-critical analysis.
