Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baseball has produced some notably strange plays--like Randy Johnson's fastball dismantling a bird--yet there have been many that defy belief. Beginning with Todd Frazier tricking umpires into calling an out with a rubber ball and culminating in Al "The Mad Hungarian" Hrabosky pitching into a scrum of two batters and a manager at home plate, this book describes the 150 most bizarre plays in the history of the game. Baserunners going in the wrong direction, outfielders kicking the ball, three runners meeting at one base, two balls in play, players ejected for dancing and many other anomalies are presented with detailed commentary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era of rowdy teams, the Cleveland Spiders (1887-1899) were baseball's rowdiest. Managed by Oliver "Patsy" Tebeau, a quick-tempered infielder, the Spiders seemed to heap abuse of one kind or another on everyone--umpires, opposing teams, even the fans. Their aggression never brought home the pennant, but Cleveland's battles with the league's top clubs, including an 1895 Temple Cup victory over the Baltimore Orioles, are now legendary. Yet the story of the Spiders amounts to more than a 12 year free-for-all. There were top-flight players like Ed McKean, George Davis, Jesse Burkett, and Cy Young. There was the racially progressive signing of Holy Cross star Louis Sockalexis, the first American Indian in the major leagues. And then there was the team's final season, 1899, when a club ravaged by syndicalism set the standard for baseball futility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1995, William B. Gould IV, then chairman of the National Labor Relations Board, cast the deciding vote to obtain the injunction that ended the longest strike in baseball history. Sixteen years of peaceful relations between baseball labor and management have followed, as well as unprecedented prosperity in a relationship that had just endured 30 years of strikes and lockouts. This study, which clearly illustrates the practical impact of law on America’s pastime, considers the 140-year sweep of labor-management relationships and conflict, exploring player-owner disputes, the development of free agency, the collective bargaining process, and the racial integration of baseball, among other topics. It concludes with a discussion of the “steroids era,” the problem with maintaining Jackie Robinson’s legacy in the 21st century, and globalization.

Book excerpt: Baseline Selling - How to Become a Sales Superstar by Using What You Already Know About the Game of Baseball, will dramatically change the way we approach the sales process, replacing the gratuitous complexity advocated by today's sales "experts" with an elegant and very effective simplicity. Studies have shown that the selling techniques of the last two decades have had very little impact on most of the sales population less than 75 percent of all salespeople, to be exact. Why? Because of the complexity, learning curve and difficulty in applying the concepts in these systems. In response to the urgent need for a flexible, innovative process that will enable people to grasp the essential skills necessary to close a sale in any situation, Baseline Selling reemphasizes the fundamentals of selling in a fresh, memorable way that modern sales professionals can relate to and utilize, and above all, one that complements and enriches advanced sales methodologies. Salespeople who read this book and put its wisdom to work will succeed at acquiring more opportunities as they learn to get appointments more easily. They will excel at creating opportunities with prospects who are "not interested". They'll sell at higher margins by using the "Rule of Ratios". Their closing percentages will improve dramatically as they implement the simple Inoffensive Close". Salespeople selling commodities, struggling to differentiate themselves, will love "Commodity Busters" and every salesperson will be able to shorten their sell cycle by "Taking a Lead". Quite simply, Baseline Selling introduces a way for salespeople to visualize and touch all the "sales bases" without over-complicating the process.

Book excerpt: Despite his outstanding pitching record, James Francis "Pud" Galvin (1856-1902) was largely forgotten after his premature death. During his 18-year career with Pittsburgh, Buffalo and St. Louis, he was one of the best-paid players in the game--but died penniless. The diminutive hurler was the first to reach 300 wins (and only four pitchers have amassed more). A determined researcher documented Galvin's record decades after his death and he was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 1965 with 365 wins. This book is the first comprehensive biography of Galvin and his use of a testosterone-based concoction--with eye-popping results--which earned him newfound attention as a pioneer of performance enhancing drugs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of my fondest memories in sports have come from games or situations where the impossible becomes reality. As I watched, I had this feeling that I hoped an unlikely athlete would become the hero ofthe moment or an underdog team could pull out an unexpected victory. Some boys and girls only ever have one opportunity to have this feeling, and we all hope that we can be there to share it with them. This book contains the stories of some of these young athletes. I hope you enjoy reading these stories and get the feeling of why it is fun to Root for the Underdog. Sports have been a big part of my life since my childhood days in Levittown, Pa. I enjoyed baseball from my Little League all the way up to high school. I liked so many sports that I was always busy playing something. In high school I lettered in soccer, tennis and basketball. In the summer I pitched softball for several adult teams. At Kutztown University I concentrated on tennis and basketball. After graduating from college I played on a semi-professional basketball team, the Exeter Black Knights, which won the National Amateur Basketball Championship in 1969. I still enjoy watching sports on television and in person - especially when my grandchildren are participating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Few Yards Shy of Heaven smothers the canvas with a litany of hues that convey the mastery football has on its fans, players, and coaches. Beyond entertainment, the game possesses the ability to completely altar rational thought. Although it crosses various levels of achievement, the heart of the game beats strongest at the high school level, where pageantry is by-product of town identity. A Few Yards Shy of Heaven details one aberrational championship football season for the people of South Heaven, Ohio. In 1980, South Heaven is struggling to overcome hardships and a deplorable economy that is forcing family-owned business to close, pushing unemployment to record high levels, and creating a general malaise of sorrow. The people find resolute escape in the unexpected and amazing success of their hometown Rangers. Melvin Wright is an outsider and young reporter assigned by a large Cleveland paper to cover South Heaven. Although his professional task is to write a story on the closure of the auto plants, Wright allows his personal agenda to overwhelm logic; expressive resentment toward the people of western Ohio. Wright holds the people responsible for his recent assignment to nowhere, and possesses an awkward sympathy for those in South Heaven desperate to leave. Mostly from spite, he develops an appetite for the surreal fascination the South Heaven faithful have in their team, despite a lack of a viable economic future. As days turn into weeks, Wright cannot avoid misfortune, and as such, cannot leave western Ohio. He is forced to endure a football season in small town America. However, as those weeks turn into months, Wright is transformed spiritually and begins to wallow in that same surrealism, only he discovers that the fascination is not about football but more about the sensation of home and small town life.

With a baseball career spanning 8 decades, Johnny has been clubhouse kid, major league shortstop with stats better than several Hall of Famers, coach, manager, broadcaster and a special evaluator of talent. At age 84, he is still in uniform, in the clubhouse and out on the field before every Red Sox home game. This book illuminates one of the most interesting lives in baseball in the twentieth century.
