Book excerpt: We tend to look for God in the grand and spectacular, but most of our lives are filled with ordinary moments and routines: drinking coffee, reading a book, driving to work. Can we find God in the banalities of everyday life? In Finding God in the Ordinary, the author shows that we can, and that we must. Our world is not an ordinary world. Because it was spoken into being and maintained by the word of God’s power (Heb 1:3), everything around us is always revealing the nature and character of the triune God. Our world is extraordinarily ordinary, always calling our attention to the God of glory and his work in the commonplace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2021 Illumination Book Awards, Silver Medal: Theology God’s presence is not “out there” but right here. We tend to look for God in dramatic or miraculous moments, but such expectations can blind us to God’s ongoing presence. What if God is already with us, in the life we have this moment? When we experience ordinary but meaningful events, such as our first love or a favorite novel, we are in fact encountering God’s presence. As we learn to notice spiritual movement within and around us, we can recognize the many facets of God’s love that touch us daily. “As a priest and spiritual director of many decades, my driving desire is for people to experience God’s limitless love for them and to recognize it when it emerges in what they consider just ordinary life happenings and conversations.” —William A. Barry, SJ Whether we are in pain or crisis, questioning if we are really worthy of God’s attention, or are simply wondering why God would be in the mundane details of our lives, Experiencing God in the Ordinary can nurture our hope—that God is always present and can be found in an ordinary day. Complete with personal stories and various suggestions for prayer and meditation, this book is perfect for devotional reading, retreat, or small-group discussion.

How do we embrace the sacred in the ordinary and the ordinary in the sacred? Framed around one typical day, this book explores life through the lens of liturgy—small practices and habits that form us. In each chapter, Tish Harrison Warren considers a common daily experience—making the bed, brushing her teeth, losing her keys. Drawing from the diversity of her life as a campus minister, Anglican priest, friend, wife, and mother, Warren opens up a practical theology of the everyday. Each activity is related to a spiritual practice as well as an aspect of our Sunday worship. Come and discover the holiness of your every day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can anything be ordinary if we find the glory of God there? Whatever might be said of life's most thrilling or transformative moments, most of our time is spent in ordinary things. We spend a third of our lives sleeping. In our adult lives, perhaps a quarter to a third of each week is spent at work. And then there's more of the common stuff: eating, waiting in line, bathing, getting dressed, and watching TV. So it is that our seventy, eighty, or ninety years go by in common ways, and we have no idea where they've gone. Is there glory in any of this? Where is the abundant life of which Jesus spoke? In this inspiring new work, J. Ellsworth Kalas says that the glory is found not just in the ecstasy of love or victory but in all of life, whether ecstatic or ordinary. Kalas believes it is possible to live with such joy and gladness of hearts that we find our ordinary lives graced by the pleasure of God. He offers a guide to spiritual contentment in the midst of busy lives, showing us the meaning in those seemingly small aspects of every day.

Book excerpt: The Scriptures ask us to think about God differently than primarily a miracle worker. They invite us to imagine God's presence and activity in our ordinary, day-to-day lives. To ask, seek, and find God in the most common areas of life is the hallmark of being a believer in God and a disciple of Jesus Christ. The Book of Ruth perfectly demonstrates this reality. It is a beautiful story of regular people finding their way through life on a day-by-day basis. As they live out their days, they discover the presence of God guiding, correcting, and providing for them along the way. God is everywhere in The Book of Ruth, but He never appears. He is a constant redeeming force, but He never speaks. God is the director of this fantastic and crucial story in the Bible, but He never forces anything to happen. He does not command, rebuke, or push. In ways both wonderful and ordinary, God simply allows people to make decisions while guiding them with a gentle hand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recipient of the 1999 Christian Book of the Year award in Australia, "Seeing God in the Ordinary" is an appeal to recover the place of the imagination in the Christian life, to rediscover the use of metaphor in a prose-flattened world, to see God in the ordinary. By a careful examination of film, literature, and other aspects of contemporary culture" as well as the Gospels" the author argues for a robust faith that embraces human experience in all its forms, that is open to the intuitive, and that has the capacity to fill us with wonder and astonishment. This book helps us to hear God not so much in the whirlwind but in the still, small voice of the ordinary, everyday moments of our lives. " Ken Gire, author of "Windows of the Soul, Moments with the Savior," and "The Reflective Life" In the midst of the current flood of books on Christian spirituality, Frost explores the way in which the great themes of Christian faith are signaled and traced by specific reference points in culture. The outcome is a book not for a quick read, but for a slow, delighted pondering. Frost s particular interest is in artistic expression in poetry, film, and narrative that opens the reader and ponderer to freshness. Who would have thought that Kafka, Keets, and Harvey Keitel could show up together, but they do here. Frost has produced a probe of a world not-yet-holy, but being made so by the presence of God s holiness in the day-to-dayness of our lives. A suggestive read! " Walter Brueggemann, Columbia Theological Seminary, author of "Finally Comes the Poet" and "The Psalms and the Life of Faith"

Book excerpt: Coincidence has been defined as: "A remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection." But enough of them and we start to think: "something or someone is involved here. It is only after looking back on my life that I could see what I once thought were a lot of really just neat coincidences were actually encounters with God or small miracles. Do these miracles happen to everyone? I thinks so. In the Bible we read that "...in Him (God) we live and move and have our being"-Acts 17:28 NIV. The problem is that too many of us never see these encounters with God as anything more than just wonderful little coincidences. An alternate possibility: I compare coincidences to what lawyer's call "circumstantial evidence." A good trial lawyer will say that you can build an airtight case on circumstantial evidence. Of course, it takes a lot of it. I submit that our lives are full of "coincidences" or "circumstantial evidence" that God is and that He is at work in and around us. These coincidences are His call for us to see Him and trust Him. Earl was born and reared in the wonderful little town of Vandalia, Missouri. Here he met and married a "farm girl," Pat Robison, to whom he has been very happily married for sixty-two years. He has been blessed with three children and six grandchildren. Earl holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Christian College, Moberly, Missouri, a Master of Arts in Human Relations Services and Counseling from Governor's State University, University Park, Illinois and a Doctorate in Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. Earl served as pastor of the Farber Christian Church in Farber, Missouri and was the founding pastor of the Deer Creek Christian Church, University Park, Illinois where he served for over thirty-seven years. Since then he has. mentored young pastors and taught a few graduate level classes. For the past 17 years he has served as teaching pastor under his sons David and Jonathan at the Carillon location of Community Christian Church in Naperville, Illinois. For fun, he and Pat love fishing, playing golf and traveling.
