Book excerpt: Riahi-Belkaoui examines the crucial issues involved in the determination and uses of earnings as a measure of financial performance. He points out that the nature and measurement of earnings are subject to various interpretations, that determination of earnings follows determination of net value added, and that earnings is subject to management manipulation (earnings can be smoothed, for example.) A succinct, penetrating, illuminating treatment of earnings in general as well as its particulars, the book will be especially useful to upper management and accounting professionals, and to their colleagues in the academic community. Riahi-Belkaoui argues that the interest in earnings and its related issues of measurement, determination, management, and usefulness stems from three factors: 1) the crucial importance of earnings as the shareholders' share of the corporation's wealth; 2) the reliance of investors and users on earnings and the transformation of earnings for resource allocation decision making; and 3), the direct association between the efficiency of the capital markets and timely provision of earnings data. Each chapter identifies the nature of the issues surrounding the concept of earnings and presents empirical evidence that can be used to make enlightened corporate decisions or to aid in the development of public policy.

Book excerpt: "This book provides the reader with a broad overview of research and the conceptual reasoning behind financial reporting. We adopt the perspective that financial accounting theory can be summarized as the quest for answers to two fundamental questions: What characterizes high-quality accounting? and What are the determinants and consequences of high-quality accounting? The book contains a discussion of how the above questions relate to: current accounting standards (such as IFRS and its Conceptual Framework), theories in economics, finance and other disciplines, evidence from empirical accounting research, and, the role that accounting plays in bridging the information gap between firms and financial statement users in capital markets. We cover a range of topics associated with accounting quality definitions, determinants and consequences. These include earnings and disclosure quality, accounting standards, the institutional environment, corporate governance, and managerial incentives. The usefulness of accounting, both for valuation and stewardship purposes, is discussed. The book is designed for graduate students in accounting and finance. It is an excellent introduction to accounting research for Master and PhD students when they write their thesis or dissertation. It is also useful for researchers who want an overview of current research and for practitioners wanting insight into the current state of knowledge about financial reporting."

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to offer a more systematic and structured treatment of the research on accounting‐based valuation, with a primary focus on recent theoretical developments and the resulting empirical analyses that recognize the role of accounting information in making managerial decisions. Since its inception, valuation research in accounting has evolved primarily along an “empirically driven” path. In the absence of models constructed specifically to explain this topic, researchers have relied on economic intuition and theories from other disciplines (mainly finance and economics) as a basis for designing empirical analyses and interpreting findings. Although this literature has shed important light on the usefulness of accounting information in capital markets, it is obvious that the lack of a rigorous theoretical framework has hindered the establishment of a systematic and well‐structured literature and made it difficult to probe valuation issues in depth. More recently, however, progress has been made on the theoretical front. The two most prominent frameworks are (i) the “linear information dynamic approach” and (ii) the “real options‐based approach” which recognizes managerial uses of accounting information in the pursuit of value generation. This volume devotes its initial chapters to an evaluation of the models using the linear dynamic approach, and then provides a synthesis of the theoretical studies that adopt the real options approach and the empirical works which draw on them. The book also makes an attempt to revisit and critique existing empirical research (value-relevance and earnings-response studies) within the real options-based framework. It is hoped that the book can heighten interest in integrating theoretical and empirical research in this field, and play a role in helping this literature develop into a more structured and cohesive body of work. Value is of ultimate concern to economic decision-makers, and valuation theory should serve as a platform for studying other accounting topics. The book ends with a call for increased links of other areas of accounting research to valuation theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: A, ( Atlantic International University ) (School of Business and Economics), language: English, abstract: Research method is a critical human practice that offers exclusive access to valid and accurate knowledge, and has an exclusive lead against errors that are not found and exist in other human activities. Moreover, it is challenging to define accounting research since it shifts over time. Traditional accounting research was mainly normative (this is, argument for the ‘correct’ accounting intervention, or what should be). However, with the introduction of the Journal of Accounting Research, developments or progresses in finance have been established, such as creation of huge data sets and the statistical capabilities for its analysis (computer advances), the efficient market hypothesis, and analyzing ‘what is’ instead of ‘what should be.’ Even though these shifts have had some critics, they have led to a major increase in research contribution (and various new journals) (Libby, et al., 2012). Additionally, accounting research contributes an integral part in new knowledge creation. The hard sciences have generated different forms of testing and research that may be applied over a range of disciplines, such as accounting research. With the application of these accounting models with evidence from experiments, surveys, stock prices, financial statements, mathematical proofs, and computer simulations, users can acquire a scientific perspective. This paper, therefore, discusses accounting methods and accounting research fields (i.e. financial, managerial, auditing, and taxation).

Book excerpt: Financial accounting theory has numerous practical applications and policy implications, for instance, international accounting standard setters are increasingly relying on theoretical accounting concepts in the creation of new standards; and corporate regulators are increasingly turning to various conceptual frameworks of accounting to guide regulation and the interpretation of accounting practices. The global financial crisis has also led to a new found appreciation of the social, economic and political importance of accounting concepts generally and corporate financial reporting in particular. For instance, the fundamentals of capital market theory (i.e. market efficiency) and measurement theory (i.e. fair value) have received widespread public and regulatory attention. This comprehensive, authoritative volume provides a prestige reference work which offers students, academics, regulators and practitioners a valuable resource containing the current scholarship and practice in the established field of financial accounting theory.

Book excerpt: Discussing a wide range of topics of contemporary relevance from the domain of finance and economics, this book presents a collection of twenty-four research papers, which were selected on the basis of their topicality, the novelty of their methods, and the importance of their subject matter. All papers pursue an empirical approach to address key research issues, and are categorized into three major parts. Part one includes papers related to development economics and environmental economics. The second part focuses on monetary economics, public economics, and behavioral economics, while the third tackles issues concerning corporate finance and financial risk management. Bringing together works of scholars from around the world, the book presents a truly global perspective, and not only serves as an essential guide on the topic for researchers, but also has a distinctive role to play in policymaking.
