Book Synopsis Angel Finally Found his Wings by : Ronald Hunter
Download or read book Angel Finally Found his Wings written by Ronald Hunter and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2023-05-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angel Finally Found His Wings is an intimate and candid memoir about a child surviving life on the streets as a prostitute. Twelve-year-old "Angel" shares a room at the YMCA in New York City with thirty-four-year-old Charlie, the pimp who is blackmailing him. Angel's mom is battling schizophrenia while Charlie, the neighborhood Boy Scout leader, grooms him away from his impoverished family, threatening to return his mother to a mental institution if Angel doesn't turn tricks on 42nd Street, the sex trade epicenter. Taking place between 1972 and 1977 on the war-torn, crime-infested streets of New York, Angel, whose real name is Ron, maintains his normal-kid status to his family, classmates, and football buddies in Brooklyn while surviving life-threatening situations hustling. Told in the dual consciousness of Ron as both a growing teenage boy and our first-person narrator looking back at his life, Angel Finally Found His Wings is emotionally wrenching and disarmingly direct. We live life on the razor's edge with Angel who, unlike most street kids, is honest and kind with his clients while rooting for Ron to escape Charlie's control, protect his mother, and recapture his life. Ron Hunter was chosen to take part in the 2010 Oprah episode "200 Men" that dealt with male childhood sexual abuse. This story unpacks the label "victim" while reframing a boy's struggle with his sexual identity and deconstructing the harrowing and gritty story behind extreme trauma. Angel Finally Found His Wings is a story of resiliency and finding self-love; it's a journey of faith paving the way for perseverance. Ron always follows his heart and, in doing so, claims ownership over his past and redefines himself on terms self-created. Ron Hunter is a lover of life, a survivor of sexual abuse, and a person of profound faith in the miraculous. He is a former US Army sergeant and a career flight attendant.

Book Synopsis I Found My Tribe by : Ruth Fitzmaurice
Download or read book I Found My Tribe written by Ruth Fitzmaurice and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A transformative, euphoric memoir about finding solace in the unexpected for readers of H is for Hawk, It's Not Yet Dark, and When Breath Becomes Air. Ruth's tribe are her lively children and her filmmaker and author husband Simon Fitzmaurice who has ALS and can only communicate with his eyes. Ruth's other "tribe" are the friends who gather at the cove in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, and regularly throw themselves into the freezing cold water, just for kicks. The Tragic Wives' Swimming Club, as they jokingly call themselves, meet to cope with the extreme challenges life puts in their way, not to mention the monster waves rolling over the horizon. Swimming is just one of the daily coping strategies as Ruth fights to preserve the strong but now silent connection with her husband. As she tells the story of their marriage, from diagnosis to their long-standing precarious situation, Ruth also charts her passion for swimming in the wild Irish Sea--culminating in a midnight swim under the full moon on her wedding anniversary. An invocation to all of us to love as hard as we can, and live even harder, I Found My Tribe is an urgent and uplifting letter to a husband, family, friends, the natural world, and the brightness of life.

Book Synopsis The World As I Found It by : Bruce Duffy
Download or read book The World As I Found It written by Bruce Duffy and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2011-12-28 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “wicked, melancholy, and . . . astonishing” novel reimagines the lives of three wildly different men adrift in the 20th century: Ludwig Wittgenstein, Bertrand Russell, and G. E. Moore (Newsday). When Bruce Duffy’s The World As I Found It was first published, critics and readers were bowled over by its daring reimagining of the lives of three very different men, the philosophers Bertrand Russell, G. E. Moore, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. A brilliant group portrait with the vertiginous displacements of twentieth-century life looming large in the background, Duffy’s novel depicts times and places as various as Vienna 1900, the trenches of World War I, Bloomsbury, and the colleges of Cambridge, while the complicated main characters appear not only in thought and dispute but in love and despair. Wittgenstein, a strange, troubled, and troubling man of gnawing contradictions, is at the center of a novel that reminds us that the apparently abstract and formal questions that animate philosophy are nothing less than the intractable matters of life and death.

Book Synopsis The Secrets of Lost Cats by : Dr. Nancy Davidson, MD
Download or read book The Secrets of Lost Cats written by Dr. Nancy Davidson, MD and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You've seen them. Hanging on telephone poles and posted on supermarket bulletin boards. But have you ever wondered about the stories behind them? When her orange tabby, Zak, disappeared, Nancy Davidson did what countless people before her had done. She made a lost cat poster. And after days of frantic searching, she found him. Nancy was ecstatic. Zak seemed happy, too—although being a cat, it was hard to tell. Zak may have remained his old self, but Nancy had changed. From that moment on, she became acutely aware of lost cat posters. She studied their language, composition, and design. She was drawn to their folk art. Mostly, however, she was intrigued by the messages themselves—the stories behind the posters. It wasn't long before Nancy reached out to other owners of lost and found cats to offer empathy and support. They told hilarious and often poignant stories. They sought advice. That's when Dr. Nancy, the cat lover and the seasoned therapist, stepped in and offered insights brought to light by her shrewd, but never self-serious analysis. What they told her—and what she learns – creates a captivating look into the heart of our relationships with our pets and each other. For seven years, Dr. Nancy followed the lost cat trail discovering answers to a question that eventually touches all of us: What will you do for love? The Secrets of Lost Cats traces the evolution of Nancy Davidson's seven-year passion for lost cat posters. From the astonishing, almost implausible posters she encounters across the country—and indeed, the world—to the daring, dedication, and emotional complexity of the cat owners themselves, The Secrets of Lost Cats offers readers an absorbing journey that illuminates love, loss, and learning to love again, even more deeply.

Book Synopsis How Does it Feel? by : Charlotte Bosseaux
Download or read book How Does it Feel? written by Charlotte Bosseaux and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2007 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narratology is concerned with the study of narratives; but surprisingly it does not usually distinguish between original and translated texts. This lack of distinction is regrettable. In recent years the visibility of translations and translators has become a widely discussed topic in Translation Studies; yet the issue of translating a novel's point of view has remained relatively unexplored. It seems crucial to ask how far a translator's choices affect the novel's point of view, and whether characters or narrators come across similarly in originals and translations. This book addresses exactly these questions. It proposes a method by which it becomes possible to investigate how the point of view of a work of fiction is created in an original and adapted in translation. It shows that there are potential problems involved in the translation of linguistic features that constitute point of view (deixis, modality, transitivity and free indirect discourse) and that this has an impact on the way works are translated. Traditionally, comparative analysis of originals and their translations have relied on manual examinations; this book demonstrates that corpus-based tools can greatly facilitate and sharpen the process of comparison. The method is demonstrated using Virginia Woolf's To The Lighthouse (1927) and The Waves (1931), and their French translations.
