Book excerpt: The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is the principal measure of trends in consumer prices and inflation. The CPI affects Federal revenues and spending because automatic cost-of-living adjustments to Fed. tax brackets and many Federal benefit programs are calculated based on changes in the CPI. In Dec. 1996, the Boskin Comm. (BC) issued a report estimating that the CPI overstates changes in the cost of living by 1.1% points annually. This report identifies the changes made to the CPI since Dec. 1996, and presents the opinions of the 5 former BC members on how much of the bias in the CPI that the BC estimated in its report remains after recent changes to the CPI.

Download or read book Price Index Concepts and Measurement written by W. Erwin Diewert and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although inflation is much feared for its negative effects on the economy, how to measure it is a matter of considerable debate that has important implications for interest rates, monetary supply, and investment and spending decisions. Underlying many of these issues is the concept of the Cost-of-Living Index (COLI) and its controversial role as the methodological foundation for the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Price Index Concepts and Measurements brings together leading experts to address the many questions involved in conceptualizing and measuring inflation. They evaluate the accuracy of COLI, a Cost-of-Goods Index, and a variety of other methodological frameworks as the bases for consumer price construction.

Download or read book Nature's Numbers written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-06-28 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to really see the forest, what's the best way to count the trees? Understanding how the economy interacts with the environment has important implications for policy, regulatory, and business decisions. How should our national economic accounts recognize the increasing interest in and importance of the environment? Nature's Numbers responds to concerns about how the United States should make these measurements. The book recommends how to incorporate environmental and other non-market measures into the nation's income and product accounts. The panel explores alternative approaches to environmental accounting, including those used in other countries, and addresses thorny issues such as how to measure the stocks of natural resources and how to value non-market activities and assets. Specific applications to subsoil minerals, forests, and clean air show how the general principles can be applied. The analysis and insights provided in this book will be of interest to economists, policymakers, environmental advocates, economics faculty, businesses based on natural resources, and managers concerned with the role of the environment in our economic affairs.
Book Synopsis Getting Prices Right: Debate Over the Consumer Price Index by : Dean Baker
Download or read book Getting Prices Right: Debate Over the Consumer Price Index written by Dean Baker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the CPI is used to index Social Security payments and many other federal programs, as well as to adjust tax brackets. Today, the accuracy of the CPI is being hotly debated, particularly in light of the Boskin Commission report that concluded in December 1996 that the CPI overstates inflation by 1.1%. If accepted and applied in the formulation of economic policy, the report would have major implications for balancing the federal budget. It would have a direct impact on the lives of Americans who are beneficiaries of government programs as well as on everyone who pays taxes. In this book, Dean Baker introduces and explains the significance of the debate, presents the full text of the Boskin Commission report and finally discusses in a far-reaching and insightful analysis both the Commission's research methodology and its conclusions.
