Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austin, Texas, entered the aviation age on October 29, 1911, when Calbraith Perry Rodgers landed his Wright EX Flyer in a vacant field near the present-day intersection of Duval and 45th Streets. Some 3,000 excited people rushed out to see the pilot and his plane, much like the hundreds of thousands who mobbed Charles A. Lindbergh and The Spirit of St. Louis in Paris sixteen years later. Though no one that day in Austin could foresee all the changes that would result from manned flight, people here—as in cities and towns across the United States—realized that a new era was opening, and they greeted it with all-out enthusiasm. This popularly written history tells the story of aviation in Austin from 1911 to the opening of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in 1999. Kenneth Ragsdale covers all the significant developments, beginning with military aviation activities during World War I and continuing through the barnstorming era of the 1920s, the inauguration of airmail service in 1928 and airline service in 1929, and the dedication of the first municipal airport in 1930. He also looks at the University of Texas's role in training pilots during World War II, the growth of commercial and military aviation in the postwar period, and the struggle over airport expansion that occupied the last decades of the twentieth century. Throughout, he shows how aviation and the city grew together and supported each other, which makes the Austin aviation experience a case study of the impact of aviation on urban communities nationwide.

Book excerpt: Until now, an approach to land use management planning that not only addresses economic issues, but also environmental concerns and health issues of land use has been lacking. These issues are vital for public policy makers, decision-makers throughout the private sector, as well as all businesses and industries that share space with the communities they serve and draw from. This volume covers the legal and regulatory aspects of land use management, the process of land use planning, and all of the related environmental, health, and societal impacts that land use planning entails. This book provides a clear, multidisciplinary approach to a very complex set of issues. An essential resource not only for public administrators, policymakers, and planners, but for people with corresponding responsibilities in business and industry, their attorneys and other advisors, and for their colleagues with similar concerns. Because of their inestimable importance, land use decisions require thorough study and evaluation before project implementation—but what makes this a challenge is the uncommon breadth of knowledge and familiarity with a wide range of disciplines that decision makers must process—and yet few have the necessary background and training. El-Ahraf, Qayoumi, and Dowd have thus had to attack their topic from a variety of viewpoints and disciplines, such as urban plannning, environmental science, energy use, public health, as well as from the viewpoints of people whose concerns are primarily socioeconomic and legal. They take these disparate and often conflicting viewpoints and integrate them, giving readers a systematic way to acquire a holistic appreciation of the topic. Although the book focuses primarily on land use in the United States, it borrows relevant examples from international data. It is therefore useful not only as a text for college courses in the area of public health and urban planning, but as a reference for professionals in many different fields with related concerns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current interest in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in higher education emerges from a reality that higher education now serves an increasing diversity of college students. An increasingly diverse student body brings to campuses various backgrounds, linguistic variations, political and religious affiliations, and sexual orientations; therefore, colleges and universities have been prompted to select content, assessment measures, and instructional strategies to not only welcome and support diversity, but to also position students’ diverse backgrounds as assets in the classrooms. This edited volume seeks to put theory into practice by inviting contributions by scholars who aim to transform the higher education classroom through equitable classroom practices premised on culturally sustaining pedagogy. Contributors to the edited volume are faculty in higher education who depict change in instruction that fosters a more inclusive and equitable learning environment. Seeking to create an understanding of how we can more fully humanize our students within historically dehumanizing institutions, we invite readers to consider equitable teaching practices through a variety of lenses. Under the canopy of access, connectedness, and belonging, this volume features initiatives that will hopefully inspire change in higher education.
