Several authors provide in-depth analysis of the interaction between ECC provisions and other relevant legal regimes (including the United States, ASEAN, the EU, Sri Lanka, India, and China), as well as the interrelations between the ECC and ICC rules, rules under the CISG, and the trade usages of the lex mercatoria. The various contributors highlight issues arising from each ECC provision, and provide well-informed insight into how remaining problems are likely to be resolved as the Convention enters into force. Stakeholders from all concerned sectors of the legal community businesspersons and their counsel, IGO and government officials, and academics will benefit greatly from the detailed information, analysis, and guidance offered here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An urgent and timely story of the contentious politics of incorporating environmental justice into global climate change policy Although the science of climate change is clear, policy decisions about how to respond to its effects remain contentious. Even when such decisions claim to be guided by objective knowledge, they are made and implemented through political institutions and relationships—and all the competing interests and power struggles that this implies. Michael Méndez tells a timely story of people, place, and power in the context of climate change and inequality. He explores the perspectives and influence low†‘income people of color bring to their advocacy work on climate change. In California, activist groups have galvanized behind issues such as air pollution, poverty alleviation, and green jobs to advance equitable climate solutions at the local, state, and global levels. Arguing that environmental protection and improving public health are inextricably linked, Mendez contends that we must incorporate local knowledge, culture, and history into policymaking to fully address the global complexities of climate change and the real threats facing our local communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Text analytics consist of the statistics about a text element, which includes the word count, the word histogram, and the word frequency histogram. Most text documents of value are related to other—sometimes many other—documents, and so analytics describing the relative frequency of terms in a document compared to its peers are important for defining key words (tagging, labeling, indexing), search-responsive terms (query terms), and compressed versions of the documents (key words, summary, etc.).This clearly written text explains the functional applications of search, translation, optimization, and learning with regard to text analytics. Generation of analytics is aided by a hybrid, ensemble, or other combinatorial approach in which two or more effective analytic processes are used simultaneously, and their outputs combined to form a better “consensus”. Additional value to the preservation of the information is provided through these methods. Also, since they encompass capabilities of two or more knowledge-generating systems, they can create a “superset” of access points to the data generated. The book also describes the role of functional approaches in the testing and configuration of these systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, countries took up the difficult task of finding a common approach that would slow down the build-up of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere and delay changes to the planet's climate. A widespread concern among many of the participants in the newly formed United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was that the emission reductions needed to significantly affect climate change would cost so much that it could jeopardize the chances of a coordinated international solution. To address this concern, several flexible mechanisms were designed, including the CDM. While many applaud the CDM, others are concerned with its performance and achievements, and whether or not it will be continued beyond 2012. Critics argue, among other things, that it has not delivered on the sustainable development objective for which it was established and that projects are unevenly distributed, both geographically and sectorally. Much analysis is available on CDM, but very little comprehensive analysis, addressing various aspects of CDM is available. With a major decision for its continuation, a multi-dimensional analysis would be needed. This book is about the economic assessment of certain (not certain) CDM performances, and its future sustainability and trajectory. Contents:Clean Development Mechanism: Past, Present, and FutureAn Updated Review of Carbon Markets, Institutions, Policies, and ResearchThe Activities Implemented Jointly Pilots: A Foundation for Clean Development Mechanism? The Cost of Mitigation Under the Clean Development MechanismDiffusion of Kyoto's Clean Development MechanismWhy Adoption of the Clean Development Mechanism Differs Across Countries?Clean Development Mechanism as a Cooperation MechanismWhy So Few Agricultural Projects in the Clean Development Mechanism? Conclusion Readership: Graduates in economics, engineering, water law, international relations and practitioners in water resource management, international water law and water policies.
