Book excerpt: Thailand’s ravenous ghost returns for a feast you’ll never forget! Mai is a krasue – a supernatural creature in the form of a young woman’s severed head with a trail of dangling entrails. For generations, she has been imprisoned on a farm in the Northeast. Now, a series of mishaps has set her loose upon Bangkok where she is on the run from a television ghost hunter hoping to turn her into a celebrity and an eccentric fortune teller bent on her destruction. With spirits abandoning their haunts, family curses coming to light, and a mob of fans demanding selfies, Mai is faced with her greatest challenge of all: where to find her next meal. A cross between H.P. Lovecraft and Ghostbusters, FILTHY APPETITES is an outrageous and action-packed romp across Thailand that will leave you laughing, horrified, and hungry for more. What others are saying "A marvelously eerie journey through Thailand's spiritual underbelly." —Colin Cotterill About the author David Young is a graduate of The University of Illinois at Chicago and a lecturer at the Language Institute of Thammasat University. He lives in Ayutthaya, Thailand.

Book excerpt: div What does eating have to do with aesthetic taste? While most accounts of aesthetic history avoid the gustatory aspects of taste, this book rewrites standard history to uncover the constitutive and dramatic tension between appetite and aesthetics at the heart of British literary tradition. From Milton through the Romantics, the metaphor of taste serves to mediate aesthetic judgment and consumerism, gusto and snobbery, gastronomes and gluttons, vampires and vegetarians, as well as the philosophy and physiology of food. The author advances a theory of taste based on Milton’s model of the human as consumer (and digester) of food, words, and other commodities—a consumer whose tasteful, subliminal self remains haunted by its own corporeality. Radically rereading Wordsworth’s feeding mind, Lamb’s gastronomical essays, Byron’s cannibals and other deviant diners, and Kantian nausea, Taste resituates Romanticism as a period that naturally saw the rise of the restaurant and the pleasures of the table as a cultural field for the practice of aesthetics. /DIV

Book excerpt: INSTANT NATIONAL BESTSELLER WINNER OF THE STORY PRIZE SHORTLISTED FOR THE DYLAN THOMAS PRIZE NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY USA TODAY, NPR, VULTURE, MARIE CLAIRE, THE TIMES OF LONDON, GOOD HOUSEKEEPING, AND PUBLISHERS WEEKLY A group portrait of young adults enmeshed in desire and violence, a hotly charged, deeply satisfying new work of fiction from the author of Booker Prize finalist Real Life In the series of linked stories at the heart of Filthy Animals, set among young creatives in the American Midwest, a young man treads delicate emotional waters as he navigates a series of sexually fraught encounters with two dancers in an open relationship, forcing him to weigh his vulnerabilities against his loneliness. In other stories, a young woman battles with the cancers draining her body and her family; menacing undercurrents among a group of teenagers explode in violence on a winter night; a little girl tears through a house like a tornado, driving her babysitter to the brink; and couples feel out the jagged edges of connection, comfort, and cruelty. One of the breakout literary stars of 2020, Brandon Taylor has been hailed by Roxane Gay as “a writer who wields his craft in absolutely unforgettable ways.” With Filthy Animals he renews and expands on the promise made in Real Life, training his precise and unsentimental gaze on the tensions among friends and family, lovers and others. Psychologically taut and quietly devastating, Filthy Animals is a tender portrait of the fierce longing for intimacy, the lingering presence of pain, and the desire for love in a world that seems, more often than not, to withhold it.

Book excerpt: In his book, 'Love The Lord Your God', David Hayward does not try to nail down rules for spiritual living and maturity through a series of meditations, but instead seeks to provide a series of opportunities for the reader to sense the fragrance of God's heart for His people and His name. Painting a spiritual picture with mere words was never going to be easy. Words convey so little of the landscape of God's beauty and heart for His children. It's as if the words themselves shrink-wrap that which is divinely beautiful. For this reason David urges the reader to read not just with the mind, but also with the heart and spirit. As you read these pages allow the Holy Spirit to carry you beyond the detail of words into the immensity of God's heart and beauty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries readers have admired the writer who wields his pen like a sword - an Aristophanes, a Rabelais, a Montaigne, a Swift. Using ribaldry, satire and irony in varying proportions, such writers pierce the thick, comfortable hide of society and uncover, predictably, the corruption and hypocrisy that characterize the life of man in commercial society. Though a lesser talent than any of these literary giants, Bernard Mande ville is nevertheless a member of their class. The crucial year in the emergence of his reputation was 1723, the year in which he added his controversial Essay on Charity and Charity-Schools to his Fable of the Bees. From that point on he became one of the most reviled targets of the public guardians of morality and religion; for some he appeared to be truly the Devil incarnate, Mandevil, as Fielding and others spelled it. This reputation was attached to his name well into the nineteenth centu ry. In a diary entry for June 1812 Henry Crabb Robinson recorded the following conversation with the elderly Mrs. Buller: "She received me with a smile, and allowed me to touch her hand. 'What are you reading, Mr. Robinson?' she said. 'The wickedest cleverest book in the English language, if you chance to know it. ' - 'I have known the "Fable of the Bees" more than fifty years. ' She was right in her guess.

This book was released on 1964 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ralph Waldo Emerson, the man and thinker, will be fully revealed for the first time in this new edition of his journals and notebooks. The old image of the ideal nineteenth-century gentleman, created by editorial omissions of his spontaneous thoughts, is replaced by the picture of Emerson as he really was. His frank and often bitter criticisms of men and society, his "nihilizing," his anguish at the death of his first wife, his bleak struggles with depression and loneliness, his sardonic views of woman, his earthy humor, his ideas of the Negro, of religion, of God--these and other expressions of his private thought and feeling, formerly deleted or subdued, are here restored. Restored also is the full evidence needed for studies of his habits of composition, the development of his style, and the sources of his ideas. Cancelled passages are reproduced, misreadings are corrected, and hitherto unpublished manuscripts are now printed. The text comes as close to a literal transcription as is feasible. A full apparatus of annotation, identification of quotations, and textual notes is supplied. Reproduced in this volume are twelve facsimile manuscript pages, many with Emerson's marginal drawings. The first volume includes some of the "Wide Worlds," journals begun while Emerson was at Harvard, and four contemporary notebooks, mostly unpublished. In these storehouses of quotation, juvenile verse, themes, and stories are the first versions of Emerson's "Valedictory Poem," Bowdoin Prize Essays, and first published work. Together they give a faithful picture of Emerson's apprenticeship as an artist and reveal the extent of his hidden and frustrated ambition--to become a writer.

Book excerpt: Raffy Rodriguez, a Yankee pitcher, is the son of a former freedom fighter in the Dominican Republic. After narrowly escaping death at the hands of his father's enemies, Raffy is sent to the U.S. where he demonstrates his extraordinary baseball skills. A shoulder injury brings Raffy to a young orthopedist, Dr. Dolores St. Vincent at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Her research has produced an untested cure for severe muscle and tendon injuries. Her discovery and skillful surgery result in a super powerful arm for Raffy. When Raffy returns to baseball, it is apparent to major league scouts that he possesses the most remarkable fastball in the history of the game. The media dubs him 'Arm' and he is signed by the New York Yankees. Dolores and Raffy discover their love for each other. She is beginning to realize that the revolutionary treatment which reconstructed Raffy's arm may be of short duration, and his arm could fail again. Raffy is locked in a heated World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Despite Dolores' warnings, he has agreed to pitch more frequently to make up for the loss of two Yankee starting pitchers. A series of unexpected events not only puts Raffy's arm in jeopardy, but also his life.
