However, very little is known about how their historical and contemporary relationship with America may shape their psychological experiences. The most insidious psychological consequence of their historical and contemporary experiences is colonial mentality or internalized oppression. Some common manifestations of this phenomenon are described below: • Skin-whitening products are used often by Filipinos in the Philippines to make their skins lighter. Skin whitening clinics and businesses are popular in the Philippines as well. The "beautiful" people such as actors and other celebrities endorse these skin-whitening procedures. Children are told to stay away from the sun so they do not get "too dark." Many Filipinos also regard anything "imported" to be more special than anything "local" or made in the Philippines. • In the United States, many Filipino Americans make fun of "fresh-off-the-boats" (FOBs) or those who speak English with Filipino accents. Many Filipino Americans try to dilute their "Filipino-ness" by saying that they are mixed with some other races. Also, many Filipino Americans regard Filipinos in the Philippines, and pretty much everything about the Philippines, to be of "lower class" and those of the "third world." The historical and contemporary reasons for why Filipino -/ Americans display these attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors - often referred to as colonial mentality - are explored in Brown Skin, White Minds. As the second largest immigrant group in the country, there are approximately 3 million documented and undocumented Filipino Americans in the US. Filipino Americans are unique in many ways. They are descendants of the Philippines, a country that was colonized by Spain for over three centuries and by the US for almost 50 years. They are the only ethnic group that has been categorized as Asian American, Pacific Islander, Hispanic, and even as their own separate ethnicity. Because of diverse phenotypes, they are often perceived as being Asian, Latino, multiracial, and others. And contrary to the Model Minority Myth, Filipino Americans have experienced several health, psychological, and educational disparities, including lower college graduation rates and higher levels of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, depression, and suicide. Book excerpt: The presenting problems of elderly Filipino Americans are examined in relation to how this population, as a unique group among Asian ethnic minorities, perceive mental illness. The influence of the Filipino culture, religion and spirituality, as well as the elderly individuals attitudes and cultural biases about aging and mental illness are explored. Much of the discussion, definitions, and treatment issues center around the Filipino culture, and how this culture relates to elderly Filipino Americans. A qualitative content analyses involve personal interviews of older Filipino Americans, an Aging Opinion Survey and a Folstein's Mini-Mental Status Examination. Results indicate that perceptions and attitudes of older Filipino Americans towards mental illness are highly influenced by historical and cultural considerations, religion and spirituality, and old age. Such perceptions and attitudes often influences older Filipino Americans to seek assistance for mental illness from family, physicians, God, and the Filipino community rather than through modern mental health practitioners. Finally, implications of past and current treatment practices are examined, as to their effectiveness in treating the elderly Filipino population.
